UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
TheTrucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign
affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Dhabi, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash
Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE).They
were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. The UAE's per capita GDP is on par with those of leading
West European nations. For more than three decades, oil and global finance drove the UAE's
economy. However, in 2008-09, the confluence of falling oil prices, collapsing real estate prices,
and the international banking crisis hit the UAE especially hard. The UAE essentially avoided the
"Arab Spring" unrest seen elsewhere in the Middle East in 2010-11 and in an effort to stem
potential unrest, the government announced a multi-year, $1.6-billion infrastructure investment
plan for the poorer northern emirates and aggressively pursued advocates of political reform.
The UAE in recent years has played a growing role in regional affairs. In addition to donating
billions of dollars in economic aid to help stabilize Egypt, the UAE was one of the first countries
to join the Defeat-ISIS coalition, and is a key partner in a Saudi-led military campaign inYemen.

System for a knowledge and global
competitive society, that includes all
age groups to meet future labor market

The UAE has focused on educating
both men and women. In 1975, the
rate of adult literacy was 54 percent
among men and 31 percent among
women.Today, literacy rates for
both genders are close to 95
percent.
Culture of the United Arab Emirates
The UAE has a diverse society. The country's historical population
as a small tribal community has been changed with the arrival of
other nationals — first by the Iranians and from other Arab
countries in the 1950s and 1960s.Furthermore, the country was a
part of the British Empire up until 1971.
The influence of Islamic, Persian and Arabian culture on
its Architecture, Music, Attire, Cusine, and Lifestyle are very
prominent as well.
Five times every day, Muslims are called to prayer from
the Minarets of Mosques, which are scattered around the
country. The weekend begins on Friday due to Friday being the
holiest day for Muslims. Most Muslim Countries have a Friday-
Saturday orThursday-Friday weekend.
United Arab Emirates: Economic
Outlook - October 2018
• Real GDP growth in the UAE is estimated to have slowed considerably from 3.0 percent in 2016 to
0.8 percent in 2017.The 2.5 percent contraction in hydrocarbon GDP was offset by non-hydrocarbon
GDP growth of 1.9 percent. Petroleum production fell by 3.5 percent, and real growth in services
dropped by 0.5 percent(real estate growth fell by 4.2 percent). On the demand side, a contraction in
private consumption and slowdown in gross fixed investment were offset by a marked rebound in
government consumption compared to 2016.
• Real GDP growth is projected to rise to 2 percent in 2018 driven by a revised OPEC+ deal resulting in
increased oil production and by a boost in the non-oil sector. Economic growth is forecast to reach
3.2 percent by 2020 through the unwinding of the OPEC+ agreement and the government’s
economic stimulus plans as well as impetus from hosting Expo 2020. Inflation is projected to rise to
4.2 percent in 2018, before moderating to 2.5 percent by 2020 as the impact of theVAT dissipates.

United Arab Emirites

  • 1.
  • 2. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES TheTrucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Dhabi, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE).They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. The UAE's per capita GDP is on par with those of leading West European nations. For more than three decades, oil and global finance drove the UAE's economy. However, in 2008-09, the confluence of falling oil prices, collapsing real estate prices, and the international banking crisis hit the UAE especially hard. The UAE essentially avoided the "Arab Spring" unrest seen elsewhere in the Middle East in 2010-11 and in an effort to stem potential unrest, the government announced a multi-year, $1.6-billion infrastructure investment plan for the poorer northern emirates and aggressively pursued advocates of political reform. The UAE in recent years has played a growing role in regional affairs. In addition to donating billions of dollars in economic aid to help stabilize Egypt, the UAE was one of the first countries to join the Defeat-ISIS coalition, and is a key partner in a Saudi-led military campaign inYemen.

  • 13. United Arab Emirates: Economic Outlook - October 2018 • Real GDP growth in the UAE is estimated to have slowed considerably from 3.0 percent in 2016 to 0.8 percent in 2017.The 2.5 percent contraction in hydrocarbon GDP was offset by non-hydrocarbon GDP growth of 1.9 percent. Petroleum production fell by 3.5 percent, and real growth in services dropped by 0.5 percent(real estate growth fell by 4.2 percent). On the demand side, a contraction in private consumption and slowdown in gross fixed investment were offset by a marked rebound in government consumption compared to 2016. • Real GDP growth is projected to rise to 2 percent in 2018 driven by a revised OPEC+ deal resulting in increased oil production and by a boost in the non-oil sector. Economic growth is forecast to reach 3.2 percent by 2020 through the unwinding of the OPEC+ agreement and the government’s economic stimulus plans as well as impetus from hosting Expo 2020. Inflation is projected to rise to 4.2 percent in 2018, before moderating to 2.5 percent by 2020 as the impact of theVAT dissipates.
