Haley Swiger - Unit Plan
Analyze the Learner
Teaching to a second grade class about the zoo with 7 boys and 8 girls. 11 white,
3 African-American, and 1 Latino. Three students in the class have ADHD.
Prior knowledge of animals in the zoo will be assessed by asking what they have
seen in a zoo.
Main Objective
My second grade class will demonstrate their knowledge of the zoo with 90%
accuracy within a five day period including the identification of animals by
becoming an "expert" on a certain one and presenting their animal, the different
animal habitats by researching and creating a poster of a zoo and what you will find
in it, and what a zoo keeper does by social media and other communication tools.
Day by Day Breakdown
Day 1:
Ask students what animals they think are in a zoo, or animals they have seen in a zoo, and what they think a zookeeper
might do.
Introduce students to habitats and what animals you would find in those habitats.
Day 2:
Have the students become a “zoo animal expert” on one animal and present their animal on day 5.
Day 3:
Discuss different animal habitats and what animals can be found in them.
Day 4:
Learn what a zookeeper does and how he/she helps the animals and the zoo as a whole.
Day 5:
Have students present the animal they became an “expert” on and go over how zoo animals, their habitats, and the
zookeepers all work together.
