CHURCH AS FIRST
LIVING WORK OF THE
HOLY SPIRIT
The first great “living”
work of the Holy Spirit, the
“Giver of Life,” is the
Church.
The word “Church” means “that
which pertains to the Lord.”
Therefore, the best way to
introduce the Church’s nature
and mission is to focus on
Christ (CFC1349).
The Church is alive
because it constantly
grows. It is active. It is
involved in the life of
the people. It
continuously responds
to the work and
mission of Christ
guided and moved by
the Holy Spirit.
The Church is NOT just the
beautiful and magnificent
structure that holds people
together in worship. THE
CHURCH IS THE PEOPLE OF
GOD, the man and woman,
children and adult, the rich
and poor who gathered
together, convoked by God,
believing in Christ and
worshipping in the Spirit of
God the Father.
The Church is NOT a
social grouping of people
BUT A FAITH
ASSEMBLY WHOSE
ROOT CAUSE IS GOD’S
FREE CALL TO ALL TO
SHARE HIS DIVINE
GOODNESS AND LOVE
IN CHRIST..
For the Church is none
other than that community
of men and women “ who
united in Christ, and
guided by the Holy Spirit,
press onwards towards
the Kingdom of the
Father and the bearers of
a message of salvation
intended for all men”
( GS1)
THE CHURCH AS MYSTERY
In Christian faith, there are mysteries
or divine truths proposed to our belief “
that are hidden in God and which can
never be known unless they are
revealed by God himself.” ( DS, 3015)
and which we will never be able to
understand fully because of the
limitation of our intelligence ( DS 3016)
MYSTERYTOTHEUNDERSTANDINGOF
THECHURCH
-simply means that there are some things that
we cannot fully know nor understand
because there is so much to learn from it and
human intelligence is not enough to contain it.

Church as a mystery leads us also to
the truth of who we are as creation of
the divine, and of God the Creator of
everything. We are part of God’s
creation, and our capacity to reason
and understand everything fully in this
world especially the divine, is limited.

Such is the case of the mystery of the blessed
Trinity. There are also created salvific realities
which can partly be known by human
intelligence but also have a transcendent
dimension that can be perceived only through
faith. These salvific realities are also called
mysteries because of their in exhaustible
richness. It is in this sense that we speak of
the Church as a “ mystery”

Toaffirmthe Churchas aMYSTERYsimplymeans:
FIRST: “a reality imbued with the hidden presence of God…
always open to new an greater exploration.” By the very presence
of God who constantly manifests, expresses and reveals Himself
and His will in the Church, she remains a mystery.
SECOND: it has a unique relation to God Himself, and therefore
also with all of us who are called to salvation precisely as a people.

The Church is both human and divine.
The Church is “human” for she is
composed of people . She is divine for
God who is divine, dwells in her. She is
resent in this material world , but her
journey ends in the eternal.
THE CHURCH AS MYSTERY:
In Relation to Blessed Trinity
The Church is related to the Trinity, to
God the Father, Jesus Christ his Son,
and the Holy Spirit. In God’s plan, the
Church was:
• Prefigured from the beginning of the world
• Prepared wonderfully in the history of Israel.
• Instituted finally in these last times. The revelation
of God has come into completion with the
incarnation of Jesus.
• Manifested in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
and
• To be brought to completion at the end of time ( CFC 1357)
The Church is a pilgrim community journeying from this
world to the promised kingdom of God.
To Jesus the incarnate Son who established
and sustains it here on earth. The church
originated and grew from Christ by his
death and resurrection . Our life in the
Church is completely Christ centered. “All
men are called to this union with Christ who
is the light of the world , from whom we go
forth, through whom we live, and toward
whom our whole life leads us” ( LG 3)
To the Holy Spirit who dwells in the Church
and in the hearts of the faithful as in a
temple and bears witness to their adoptive
sonship. The spirit guides the Church into
the fullness of truth, gives her a unity of
fellowship and service, and constantly
renews and leads her to perfect union wither
spouse , Christ.
The Church is mystery by reason of:
•Its origin in the Father’s plan of salvation
•Its ongoing life in the Risen Christ and
the Spirit ; and
•Its ultimate goal in the fully achieved
KOG. ( CCC 1361)
The teaching of
Church as a
MYSTERY is better
understood by most
Filipinos if focused
on personal
communion .
Our strong sense of
personal belonging as a
nation will help us bind
together as a community
of Disciples of Christ.
The communion of the
Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit is our model
and source of Christian
communion as a Church.
