Patents are used to protect the ideas of a person or organisation. It stops
others from copy an idea which then protects the patent holder from losing out
on profit for an idea that they could be making money from.
Patent holders can licence others
giving them permission to use their
idea provided they pay a licence fee.
patents can be good if it costs a lot to
develop the idea (like in the case of
drugs or technology).
They can also be hindering and stop
new ideas from being developed out
of older ones.

A very important piece of legislation is the The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).
The Act makes it a legal requirement for businesses to undertake a risk assessment of all the workplace, to ensure the
safety of workers and prevent accidents. The Act specifies that:
●safety procedures must be displayed for all to see
●workers must be trained to use machines and equipment
●appropriate protective clothing must be worn if needed
●all risks must be controlled and monitored
