2. WHAT IS UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN?
• UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN described as practical and
useful “backward” design process in which anticipated results
are first identified: acceptable evidence for learning outcomes is
established and only then, are specific learning experiences and
instruction are planned.
• Helps students apply what they learn in a course to the real
world, which deepens and enriches their learning experiences.
• Integrating curriculum, instruction and assessment within a
unit of study in any discipline
3. WHAT IS UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN?
• A unit design template for beginning with the end in mind
means to begin with the clear vision of your desired direction
and destination. It means to know where you’re going so that
you better understand where you are now and so that steps you
take are always in the right direction. (Stephen Covey)
4. WHAT IS UNDERSTANDING BY DESIGN?
• Understanding by design (UbD) is a theory developed by
Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe for educational planning based
on “teaching for understanding”.
• The key terms of the UbD are “backward design”,
understanding understanding, “six facets of understanding”,
performance assessments, design meaningful curriculum and
instruction.
