There are four main sentence functions in English: Declarative sentences make a statement or provide information. They are the most common type and end with a period. For example: "The first toilet ever seen on television was on Leave It to Beaver." Interrogative sentences ask a question and end with a question mark. For example: "How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm when they've seen Paris?" Imperative sentences give a command or direction, and often omit the subject. They end with a period or exclamation mark. For example: "Sit down and listen!" Exclamatory sentences express strong emotion and end with an exclamation mark. They often begin with "What" or "How". For example: "What a mess this room is!"
