4. Applied teaching for
the real world
We take pride in the strength of our teaching;
accredited, applied and professional, we’re here
to support you and provide you with the best
possible learning experience.
Our teaching is applied, so we set it against real-world
challenges. You’ll apply your new-found knowledge away from
the lecture theatre and impress potential employers with your
practical experience. The majority of our courses are accredited
by professional bodies, boosting you even further in prospective
employers’ eyes.
We have the highest possible rating for the quality of our
education from the most recent independent Quality Assurance
Agency report. But that doesn’t mean we’re resting on our
laurels; we are constantly looking for ways to innovate and
improve our teaching.
We’re not short on professional expertise either. You’ll be taught
by professionals and specialists who practise, or have practised,
in their chosen fields, and who bring their expertise into the
classroom.
Our staff maintain good connections with employers, including
professional bodies and public and private-sector companies.
Our strong links with business mean our programmes are up to
date with industry needs, offering you insight into the world of
work you’ll enter when you leave. Many courses feature work
placements, and we also regularly invite outside experts to
speak with you.
Our approach is student first, student led. We put you first,
with the mix of skills and experience needed for your future
career always at the forefront of our teaching. Put simply, our
courses will give you the knowledge, opportunities, expertise
and development you need to succeed after university.

At LSBU, we apply our research to current
global issues, with direct outcomes for you
and the programmes you study.
Our Schools are involved in a wide range of research projects,
many involving collaborations with business or public bodies,
tackling some of today’s most testing issues.
We recognise that your knowledge needs to be cutting edge,
so you can hit the ground running when you start your career.
That’s why we share our research in the classroom as case
studies, because we think a collaborative, motivated
atmosphere is a key factor in our students’ success.
We’ll bring in experts as guest speakers, and lecturers use
their research to help guide you in your final year projects,
lending their expert knowledge to your success.
To keep our research practically focused, we offer companies
and organisations all kinds of ways to access our expertise.
This has been instrumental in developing global brands and
products such as FitFlop, which our pioneering research in foot
and ankle biomechanics helped develop, as well as improving
public services, such as our research into cooling the London
Underground which has been incorporated into a £500 million
upgrade of the tube system.
Our research is wide-ranging – subject areas include everything
from nursing, psychology and sports science to construction,
robotics and business processes, but underlying all of it is the
goal of creating new knowledge for practical purposes.

Enterprise is not just about starting a
business; it’s about recognising opportunities
and seizing them. Developing enterprise
skills is essential for your future, whether you
become an entrepreneur or a freelancer, work
for someone else.
At LSBU, enterprise is a part of everything we do and we offer
plenty of opportunities, many built into our courses through
practical modules, internship and placement opportunities,
and workshops and guest lectures.
Supporting your initiatives
Our Student Entrepreneurship Support Service is a one-stop
shop for advice about starting up a business and keeping it
going – available to you before and after graduating. We also
organise enterprise internships, giving you the chance to get
involved in the workings of a small start-up.
If you have an idea you want to test, contact our Spark scheme.
You could receive £500 of funding, office space, mentoring,
guidance and the chance to bid for further funding. We also
have a 12-month Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme, which offers
graduates funding, office space, training and specialist advice.
Investment in enterprise
We’ve recently invested £10 million in the new Clarence Centre,
home to the University’s Research, Enterprise and Innovation
team, student entrepreneurs, businesses and social enterprises
and services for the local community. The Centre offers high-
quality fully serviced offices for fledgling businesses and social
enterprises, event facilities and retail space. It also includes a
Business Solutions Centre and a Legal Advice Clinic, staffed by
students, which both serve the local community. The Business
Solutions Centre and the Legal Advice Clinic provide the
opportunity to observe and participate in the delivery of advice
to local businesses and individuals.
LSBU Rocket start-up accelerator
LSBU has partnered with university start-up specialists Start Up
Republic to launch LSBU Rocket, the UK’s first student business
accelerator scheme designed and delivered in collaboration
with leading figures in the start-up community. The scheme
is providing £15,000 worth of start-up support to the seven
LSBU student and graduate businesses accepted onto the
programme.
The seven start-up businesses will receive six months of
intensive support through mentoring and workshops delivered
by investors, business experts and successful entrepreneurs.
Last year we secured £1.2 million
of funding for start-ups and SMEs
(including £140,000 for student
start-ups and businesses)

Being a student in London – a leading global
city famed for its history, culture, business and
leisure opportunities – is a special experience.
LSBU is at its heart, ideally placed for everything
the city has to offer.
London’s a centre for law, fashion, finance, the arts and
technology. It’s a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity –
apparent in both its buildings and its customs. The capital
thrives on its multi-ethnic, multilingual culture. More than
300 languages are spoken here every day and you’ll spot a
wide variety of people, cultures and eating options when
you walk through its streets.
LSBU’s Southwark campus is situated in Elephant and Castle,
which is ideally placed to discover all London has to offer.
Being in the middle of things means we’re accessible to all
the capital’s main sights, attractions and incredible nightlife.
As a small sample, the Southbank Centre, Tate Modern, Ministry
of Sound and the London Eye are close by. The area is vibrant and
exciting with plenty of shops, bars and cafés on the doorstep.
Excellent transport links mean that most of the city’s other
galleries, theatres and night spots are minutes away. We’re at the
hub of the South-Central London bus network, two minutes from
the London Underground station and close to an overground
station served by Thameslink and Southeastern trains. We’re
within walking distance from mainline stations London Waterloo
and London Bridge too.
Living in a global
capital
The city’s galleries, theatres and
night spots are minutes away
There are over 12,000 places to eat
around the city. If you dine at a
different location every night, it will
still take you more than 32 years to
visit them all!
London has more international
visitors than any other city in the
world: 15.3 million per year.
More languages are spoken in
London than in any other city in
the world (270).

Alumni profile: Louis Annan | BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise
Science, freelance sports coach
Louis was attracted to the Sport and Exercise Science course when he learnt
about the opportunity to apply for a sports scholarship at LSBU.
“I took a gap year to play basketball in America which made me realise that
university was the right choice for me. When I came back, it all fell into place
when an old coach of mine who was working at LSBU recommended me for a
scholarship. I researched the Sport and Exercise course and it seemed like the
perfect fit – it was a no-brainer.”
Managing his academic work, sport and working as a coach throughout his
time at LSBU enabled Louis to develop the skills to pursue a freelance career
within his passion for sport.
“My course helped me prepare for my career as a freelancer as I learnt how to
balance my time and commitments. I have learnt to manage different types of
people and age groups with confidence.”
Louis’ involvement with the Academy of Sport is what really set apart his
university experience and gave him the drive to succeed in the sports industry.
“I managed to win sports ambassador of the year twice in a row; this was
measured on my overall contribution and proactivity. There is such a great
feeling of community at the Academy of Sport.”

Staff profile: Julie Gawrylowicz | Lecturer in Psychology
Julie is the module co-ordinator of Psychological Approaches and chair of
the departmental ethics committee for undergraduate research projects.
Having developed her career through academia, Julie uses her experience
to support students who want to pursue an academic career and embeds
her research within her teaching.
“I am interested in cognitive and social psychology; in particular, eye
witness memory and how the police should best interview witnesses and
victims. At the moment I am doing some really interesting research in our
bar lab, looking at how alcohol impacts eye witness memory.”
As the employability officer for the division of Psychology, Julie recognises
the importance of preparing students for employment after they leave the
University.
“We equip our students with transferable skills which will boost their
employability. We provide them with organisational, communication, time
management and other related skills through our employability sessions.
Once students finish at LSBU they’ll have gained the right skills to give
them a great chance of success in the job market. We put a lot of effort into
making our students more employable, in addition to all the academic skills
they gain.”
Specialist laboratories and
professional equipment
We designed and equipped our laboratories to prepare you for the workplace
and reflect the environments you’ll find there. Specialist facilities include
biomechanics, physiology and gait analysis labs in our human performance area,
where we assist Olympic-level as well as developing athletes.
Our forensic labs feature the latest analytical equipment, including electron
microscopy and inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry. You can also carry out
detailed DNA testing there. In our bioscience laboratories there’s equipment for
conducting a wide range of chemical and biological tests.
In our newly refurbished bakery school is a range of professional equipment to
rival that of leading professional kitchens. We have also recently made extensive
£1 million upgrades to our experimental psychology facilities.

Welcome to the School of
Arts and Creative Industries
The School of Arts and Creative Industries
offers courses at the forefront of creative
thinking and multimedia practices. We’re well
placed to combine internationally recognised
research excellence in science and technology
with a strong heritage in design, performance,
media and the visual arts. Our courses bridge technology and the
arts, which means we’re able to develop interdisciplinary interests,
combining technology and creative practice.
To embark on your future careers, we know you need to be bilingual
‘artist-coders’. So we offer you this opportunity, and ensure that our
programmes are designed with the new digital economy in mind.
We ensure that everyone leaves with a deep understanding of
the converged digital media environment. For example, the new
journalism is bold, immersive and experimental. To thrive in this
changed landscape, journalists need to reinvent the way they
communicate with audiences. So we encourage you to experiment
with how the journalism of the future will be played, not read.
We’re working with some of the capital’s major arts institutions
through collaborative grants and research funding. We’re also
conducting investigative research into artists’ books, experimental
film and photographic self-portraits, as well as many other areas.
Our SE1 franchise ensures that we have the widest range of
internationally renowned creative industry partners and our staff
are widely recognised for their own high-level industry practice.

Alumni profile: Amelia Hallsworth | BA (Hons) Photography,
freelance photographer
Amelia’s passion for photography began at A level, but she didn’t feel ready
to go out on her own as a professional without some further training so she
enrolled on the BA (Hons) Photography course. The course has a strong focus
on employability and excellent connections to industry, which allowed her to
develop her creative flair.
Amelia currently works as a full-time photographer for Foxtons estate agents.
This involves photographing various interiors and properties, sketching up the
floor plans and writing and creating the online brochures.
“You never know what to expect with this job, you can be going to photograph
your average house in London or photographing a £10 million pound mansion,
so the job keeps me constantly surprised and occupied.”
During her time at LSBU Amelia undertook work experience at Oxford House,
a community art centre, and Furtherafield Gallery, exploring issues around
photography at the same time as developing her practical skills.
“What was most valuable for me on the course was the work placement
module, as it helped me gain experience in photography as a career and
the many different avenues I could potentially explore after university. This
module also helped me gain confidence in my photography work as well as a
better understanding of what it’s like to do photography work for a company
or organisation, not just my own personal projects.”

Staff profile: Simon Pittman | Senior Lecturer BA (Hons)
Drama and Performance
Alongside his work at LSBU Simon is part of Frantic Assembly, most
recently as a movement associate for The Curious Incident of the Dog in
the Night-Time.
“The knowledge and industry practice of the teaching staff on the Drama
and Performance course is incredibly current, and we’re all working in very
different fields of theatre and performance. We’re always shifting and
developing the course content to reflect this because it is a course that
combines theory and practice, but very much focuses on the craft of the
creative artist and making work.”
This year Simon set up a new module on the course called ‘The professional
toolkit’ which takes undergraduate students through the process involved
in creating performance.
“It models the process of conceiving a show and then applying for funding,
developing the show artistically and working with a budget. Within this
module we run a symposium in which we expose our students to industry
contacts and external practitioners including leading theatre directors.
“Students gain a really broad set of skills on our course; they come out
with a real rigour of thinking. Students leave with a balanced understanding
of the subject and how it relates to the world and industry they are going
out into.”
