This document summarizes research on the thermal behavior of nomex, polyester, and cotton materials under a race suit. Testing showed that a nomex undersuit provided better thermal protection than a race suit alone, increasing time to a second-degree burn from 10.8 to 16 seconds. In contrast, a polyester shirt that melted and adhered to skin at 16 seconds could cause more severe injuries requiring skin removal. A cotton shirt did not melt or stick like polyester.
