Hence it can be estimated that there may be approximately 126,716 persons with disabilities among the population of refugees, asylum seekers, IDPs and stateless persons in Ukraine.
In situations of forced displacement, persons with disabilities may be at heightened risk of exploitation and violence; and often face numerous barriers to accessing humanitarian assistance. In addition, persons with disabilities are often excluded from participation in decisionmaking processes and opportunities to use their capacities to benefit their families and communities.
UNHCR’s Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) Policy details the organization’s wider commitment to a rights-based approach and highlights that effective protection will only be achieved by ensuring equal consideration is given to the needs and capacities of different age, gender and diversity groups within displaced communities. UNHCR is thus committed to ensuring that the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and IDPs with disabilities are met without discrimination.

As per 2011 census there are 2.68 crore differently
abled persons in the country. Assistive devices and
equipments can significantly help persons with disabilities
to become independent in daily activities. There are many
eminent technical educational institutions in India and
many are conducting research works for the development
of assistive technology for the differently abled. So an
extensive search was conducted to explore the assistive
technology related projects undertaken in India. Out of 137
studies retrieved 34 met the inclusion criteria. The result
shows that many researches are being carried out for the
development of assistive technology in India. Many of the
products are in the prototype stage or in the feasibility
stage. It emphasises the need for extensive field testing and
commercial production of the assistive technologies. Such
initiatives will lead to differently abled empowerment. The
authors put forward some suggestions in this regard.

Louis Braille was visually impaired, but his creation Braille, known by his name, enabled blind people worldwide to read and write. They are the people who proved that it is not disability but one’s ability that counts. There was a time when disability - physical or mental, was considered a curse both on the family of the disabled person and the person himself. It was believed that it was God's retribution for sins committed in previous birth. Thankfully, modern science has helped to clear such misapprehensions. Disability is now being accepted as a curable medical condition. The disabled are no longer expected to be treated as outcasts of society. Science and innovation has provided tools to supplement their disabilities. Braille, Jaipur foot are some examples which have bettered the lives of the physically disabled.
