TalkOut: Hearing What Youth Say About Live Performance
Last year during the Kennedy Center Annual Meeting, MI 1997 (University Musical Society, Ann Arbor Public Schools, Washtenaw Intermediate School District), with the guidance of Eric Booth, designed an experiment that would allow the team to better capture the impact of its School Day Performances on youth, while also making connections to the Common Core standards. TalkOut was born: a live, post-performance chat format that invites students to the stage to talk about and reflect upon their experience immediately following the show. UMS Director of Education & Community Engagement Jim Leija will talk about the ins and outs of launching this project, and share some of the students’ responses.

A proposal which describes a strategy to align the vision of the MET with an authentic communication, one which is translated into immersive and participatory programs with the aim of transforming the museum as a brand that does the story it tells.
The Links Education and Cultural Center is a space within the newly re-designed National Civil Rights Museum. Since the April 2014 reopening, the Links Center has played a vital role in establishing partnerships and broadening programming at the Museum. Partnerships have included MidSouth Peace and Justice, Life Skills Workshops through Links, Inc. Leadership Academy, the Guidance Academy of True Enrichment, and more. The Center has also been the host site of teacher training initiatives. Further, the NCRM Education Department is reaching beyond the walls of the Museum and into local classrooms. This session will highlight the potluck of mission-driven partnerships between the National Civil Rights Museum and its community.
