2. THE 2018 GRADUATING BATCH OF UNIVERSITY OF GHANA BUSINESS SCHOOL
PRESENTS
UGBS 2018
YEARBOOK
WITH THE HELP OF MR. X & MS. Y
3. CONTENTSWe are really excited to finally bring this Yearbook dream to a
reality! The whole idea came to mind in Level 400 first semester. We
realized that the departures of everyone from the four corners of
University of Ghana was imminent and we wanted to make a mark
and leave something behind for the student body to remember
and cherish for the rest of their lives. As this has never been done
before by our predecessors and it served as an excellent motivation
to make it happen. We tried to involve the whole student body by
giving chances to everyone to bring in their quotes whilst taking
pictures of themselves to attach to the quotes. The process was
indeed involving but in the end we got it done and we are thankful
to everyone who contributed to it. This yearbook shares the biggest
experiences from the beginning of our journey to the end. It is our
sincere hope that this becomes a stepping stone for even better
yearbooks to emerge in the near future. It was made for you and we
hope you enjoy it.

ABOUT UGBS
5. Who was your inspiration as a child and who is your
inspiration now?
My inspiration? I have always been my source of
inspiration. I see myself to be an internally-locused
human actor.
What were your favourite and worst subjects during
your time at UGBS?
Principles of psychology taught by Dr. Afrifa and
Professor Arku’s Accounting in level 200. My worst
one was Mrs. Charlotte Osei’s Commercial Law 1. She
displayed a lot of arrogance!
Do you engage in any other work apartfrom lecturing?
Yes I do. I help others outside the confines of the
classroom including consultancy.
What do you usually do in your spare time?
I drink with friends. Spare time is spare time.
What things in life are still a mystery to you?
The power to dominate others is very important to some
academics
Favourite musician, actor and/or celebrity?
Daddy Lumba tops the lot for me. I also enjoy the songs
of others like Amakye Dede, Kojo Antwi, Ebony and Bob
Marley. Christiana Love and Philipa Baafi sing very good
gospel songs as well and I like listening to them. For
actors, it’s Bob Santo. The celebrity though it’s myself,
Agyenim-Boateng.
Would you pet a rabbit given the chance?
Always. Coincidentally, we had one when I was a child.
Rabbits are adorable creatures and I plan on keeping
some at home in the near future.
What has impressed (and disappointed) you the most about
the current crop of students in UGBS?
UGBS possess very intelligent students with bright futures
but excuse my language, they show some worrying amount
of timidity.
Where would you want to be in the next decade?
I want to become a source of reference for new insights into
accounting and governance knowledge.
What keeps you up at night? (i.e. Your greatest fear)
The population ratio does! Those on the street usually
produce 80% of us and when that percentage comes into
power, they’ll rule the remaining 20% with vengeance
because they most often than not blame their past
misfortunes on them.A brutal form of dictatorship emerges
from that.
If you had the power to change anything, what will you
change in UGBS, UG, Ghana and World?
In the UGBS setting, I would help allow more
conversations between the student body and the
lecturers as there is a gap between them. I also would
encourage better cohesion among the various units
in the University of Ghana as a whole. The church
and other independent institutions in our nation have
to be more transparent in their dealings and I would
encourage that given the chance. In the world?
Homosexuality is something I would want to help
prevent through some form of treatment.
What advice would you give to the 2018 Year group?
They should go out and be good ambassadors of
UGBS and University of Ghana.
Dr. Cletus Agyenim-Boateng is an accomplished
individual with a first-class Bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration, Accounting option from the
University of Ghana Business School and also has a
certificate in Professional Ethics. He also happens to
be a member of theAssociation ofCharteredCertified
Accountants (ACCA) and British Accounting and
Finance Association (BAFA). That does not end there.
He holds a PhD degree in Accounting and Finance
from the University of Manchester Business School
and a Master’s degree in International Development,
Development Finance option (with merit), from the
University of Manchester’s Institute for Development
Policy and Management (IDPM). If we delve into other
stuff about him, we might have to write a full book
(laughs). The UGBS Yearbook 2018 are honored to get
the chance to speak to him.

6. DISCLAIMER
TheeditorialboardoftheUGBS2018Yearbookisnot

Mr. X is an average looking
UGBS, and by this, it means
he has a nice haircut,
designer top, wears jeans
and a sneaker footed guy
who comes to class with
earpiece in his ear listening
to God knows what, with
one book in his hand. He
complains that G1 is too
small and prefers A1 to the
former because it’s huge
making it easier for him
to hide from questions
and statements like “this
is embarrassing” from
you know who, leaves late
for tutorials and end up
perching in the already
crowded F4/F5. He usually
pretends to laugh at
lecturers’ dry jokes, hardly
writes notes and wants the
class to end early because
he has FIFA/NBA/MK
fixtures to play with his
‘homeboys’ or he simply
doesn’t like the lecturer
for personal reasons. After
class, he chats a little and
collects few hugs from his
female friends as well as
crushes he may be trying
to cuff and talks to his boys
about everything afterwards;
from football matches that
were played over the previous
weekend to small talks about
how he got compliments from
female colleagues and new-
found admirers on his new
shirt or sneakers as well as
his improved physique, never
forgetting to switch dialects;
from pidgin to eloquently
composed English depending
on the gender and level of
familiarity. He then leaves his for
his hall till the next lecture.
It can’t be proven that Ms. Y
actually hasn’t got a braided hair,
pencil jeans and flats wearing
lady, with her handbag at hand.
Not forgetting her favourite
convo starter being “hey, I
like your shoe” even though
she has seen a guy wear it for
the hundredth time. With the
front seat being her favourite
position in class, she elegantly
walks in class alone or usually
with her clique and brings out
her materials to prepare for the
lecture. During lectures, she
writes a lot of notes eligibly and
sometimes records if feeling
lazy as well as asking questions
and never forgets to laugh at the
lecturer for the mistakes made. She
makes sure to get familiar with the
TAs during tutorial sessions for smart
and other reasons. She normally
leaves class quickly because she
either is the ‘no new friends’ type or
has to cook or continue her favourite
series or even has to go for her new
clothes to ‘slay’ in subsequently
lectures as a way of stunting on
her male colleagues, especially the
zoned ones on her list as well as their
crushes. After all, she has to increase
her brand positioning.
Aside from we going for lectures
for at least 45 courses during our 4
years in UGBS, * sigh, it wasn’t easy
ad all but we’ve made it*, others
took interest in the personal lives of
others through gossips or sometimes
eavesdropping during their small
talks about the opposite sex to know
their relationship statuses and to be
updated all the time.
Both Mr. X and Ms. Y like to know
“stuff”, what is happening when,
where and being done who. Mr. X
knows who’s dating who, who got
snubbed (baaad bouncing), who’s
zoned and who is in a comfortable
lead. Also knows who missed class
and why. The editorial board, with
its quest to bring a sense of realism
to this, requested both of them
to come on board with their vast
knowledge of the happenings in the
lives of UGBS students, which was
accepted but came along with some
of the more mischievous behaviour,
which are scattered throughout the
yearbook. From the hard-hitting Prof
(with all due respect), to the F sharing
mafia lecturer, the ever-famous Kay
Pee and Kombat brouhaha and the
subsequent licking the former in the
controversial but successful BHJCR
elections. Also, the clash of the balls,
not forgetting the hearsays after the
leavers’ dinner, the ever hilarious but
unnecessary group fights, amongst
others.
So, sit back, relax, laugh like you do in
those moments, sigh if it’s aimed at
you and enjoy the handiwork of Mr. X
and Ms. Y.
PS: If you’re looking for who they are,
here is a hint for you, it’s @&^%*?:>

A DAY IN THE LIFE
OF A DIASPORAN STUDENT
A
typical day well sure goes
like this; getting up from bed
(either through an alarm or
that roommate who likes his early
dose of music) swaging up putting
on my best sneaks, plugging in some
earphones basically for sound effect
purposes, then the struggle begins
coming out of the hall to meet
fellow estranged students under the
scorching rays of the sun , those who
think they’re above the norm always
have an extra ¢5 to charter that taxi
and those who have cars have their
cars full with other course mates, for
methoughinordertominimizeevery
expense to the barest minimum
because I’m applying the golden rule
I learnt at UGBS on day 1, “minimum
cost yields maximum profit”, thus
choose to use the best alternative
known to me; ‘shuttles’. Fast forward
after all the pushing squeezing and
standing in the bus,
I get to the business school at 1. 25
pm, and class starts in 5 minutes,
I rush in feeling all dapper, the
occasional ‘waves’ and ‘hi’s’ with my
close female friends, then I climb
the stairs or use the elevator if I’m
feeling ‘’staircase challenged’, the
elevator to get into A1. I get there
and the front row normally seated
with the girls who have already
booked the first 6 rows for friends
who are now waking up from sleep,
with exercise books that I wish I
could fly out of the window, but for
the fear of being chastised I make
my way slowly to the back, which
is also full, what?! boys have also
booked seats?! Absurd! It’s now left
with the last row of A1 which is as
good as being in bed. Some would
go into neighbouring classrooms
and take chairs and fix on the lanes
which the lecturers would use to
navigate the class potentially saving
the back benchers from the gnarling
questions of these lecturers.
I sit down and the lecturer walks in
briskly and begins the lecture but
most of my fellow back-benchers
are either chatting, texting or liking
the photos of girls in the class on
Instagram. Trying to concentrate
proves futile, so I resort to their
means which includes chatting
sports in between, this continues
until a “Hey you! gentleman in the
stripped top” shouts disrupts the
activities, I look up and there is this
lecturer about to ask me a question,
I haven’t been listening to, instantly
feel let down by those who took
seats they were supposed to block
the lanes to prevent this from
happening. He asks “What’s the
answer?”, my mates know that my
failure to answer the question may
result in the attention swaying over
to their end, one quietly feeds me
the answer, I answer and the lecturer
is convinced I was listening.A big win
for the back benchers and myself,
for not looking like a fool. I attempt
to listen because of the recent scare
but ultimately end up back peddling,
and before I know it, class is almost
over, and I’ve barely heard a word.
It’s the end of the class, there is a
mad rush into the class from the
next class coming to use the room,
the third battle of the day ensues
just to get out of the class.
I get out, I see my boys who “sold
me out” by not “reserving” me a
seat. A quick exchange of banter,
then I see the girls, the greetings are
in order again and this time there
is even more time to chat and not
waste the outfit I put on. Retreating
to the hall is done either by the same
shuttle, but I know my “legoghini” is
very cool, and since it’s in the late
afternoon, the sun is down and oh
yeah, the girls are also utilising their
“Benzes” what more could I possibly
ask for? Plus, I’m are still applying
golden rule 1, this should work out,
until some other guy or girl who
has an automobile comes to snatch
them up right from underneath my
nose, but then it does not matter
anyway, because not too far ahead
I can hear the Paul Pogba “Labile”
shouts and realise that my boys are
not too far ahead and I can catch up
and partake that argument which
ultimately leads to the hall!
33. 64 65BATTLE OF BALLS PAGE
BIT OF HISTORY
ROYAL BALL
RRB
ASNARRATEDBYMs.Y
The Royal Ball vs RRB. Some say the R stands for “rebels”, others
say “Renegades” and some say it’s rather “Rich”, but what we
do know is that, these are two events with the same idea but
different opinions on how it should be running. The Royal Ball is
an event organized by the BHJCR to serve as the official handing
over of power from one generation of executives to the other and
the giving of awards to deserving winners whilst socializing. The
RRB focuses more on socializing and having fun with a few people
whilst giving out their awards as well. Why are they separate?
What brought the division? Sources say the Royal Ball in 2016 did
not turn out as well as was hoped.A lot of complaints came up and
some of the students from that program decided to bring the RRB
into being: “An event the Royal Ball ought to be”. A night at UGBS
quadrangle or a night at Holiday Inn... A normal red carpet or one
with a limo in tow? Those are the extra benefits RRB decided to
add to make it special. Did they achieve that goal last year? Did
the Royal Ball make amends? Which was better? Which flopped?
Were the students tagged “rebels” justified or the tagged was
right?
So Ms.Y has taken it upon herself to share these with you, so you
make you your own choice, but she has decided to pass certian
comments at certain times, just because she can’t help herself so
be on the lookout for those.

48. The first ever lecturer and students keep fit exercise was so lit. An
unforgettable memory indeed. The walk to Aburi so hectic, tiring but also
so worth it
Although I am not immune to failure, I woke up Tuesday morning to
the shock of my life; that I was not going to graduate just because of
management accounting. It was that terrible. On Wednesday morning I
entered Doctor Coffie’s office and all he could ask me was, who told me
to enter. That is just because he didn’t want to listen to me. He just packed
his things and left. At that point, all hope was almost gone until the next
day when I and a friend went to see Dr Agyenim. He then assured us that
they will do something about it. At that point, I knew that it will only take
a miracle from God for Dr Coffie to do anything about the grades. God
being so God something was done about it and today I look forward to
graduating. One moment you are not graduating and the other moment
you are graduating. It was such an experience I will never forget. UGBS

Albert Owusu Amankwaa (Health Service Administration) In level 300
we met one lecturer who was strict and we were afraid of him his
name is Nana Nimo Appiah. Interestingly he became our best lecturer
and friend in level 400 and we enjoyed our time with him. On the 26th
October of last year he prepared a surprise birthday party for me that
was overwhelming and least expectant. I want to dedicate this to him
and say his heart, love and sense of direction was our strength.
