Overcommit is a tool that runs pre-commit hooks to check code quality and enforce best practices before code is committed to a repository. Rails is optimised for the first weeks of development. At the later phases it's no longer the speed of adding new views and data that matters. It's often more about the different (and changing!) ways of using the data. The business logic gets more complicated.
DDD has answers to those problems. Detecting the bounded contexts is the crucial skill. Choose which parts of the app leave as CRUD and which could go into more of the tactical DDD.

Drupal and the semantic web - SemTechBiz 2012
This document provides a summary of a presentation on leveraging the semantic web with Drupal 7. The presentation introduces Drupal and its uses as a content management system. It discusses Drupal 7's integration with the semantic web through its built-in RDFa support and contributed modules that add additional semantic web capabilities like SPARQL querying and JSON-LD serialization. Configuring in the Browser, Really!
We present an approach for tackling common problems in configuration
frameworks:
- It is often difficult to map a conceptual model of a configurable
product into the restricted capabilities of configuration engines.
For the end user this leads to suboptimal UIs.
- The communication between a custom UI front-end and the configuration
engine is cumbersome to implement. For the end user the need for
round-trips between the UI and the configuration server can cause a
sluggish user experience.
With HTML5 and JavaScript-based UI frameworks such as React.js browsers
have advanced into a powerful application platform. This allows to run
not only the UI but also the configuration logic in the browser.
This benefits the work of various stakeholders:
- Modelers are provided with powerful data structures and the ability to
define their own concepts.
- Gradually extending the standard UI with custom features becomes easy
and is based on standard technologies.
- End users will enjoy the user experience of modern web applications.
- End users can even use configurators in offline mode, without access
to a server.
- There is no need to run and maintain a server-side configuration
engine.
We will demonstrate this approach with concrete products and discuss the
integration with an SAP back end.

Gradle is an open-source build automation tool focused on flexibility, build reproducibility and performance. Over the years, this tool has evolved and introduced new concepts and features around dependency management, publication and other aspects on build and release of artifacts for the Java platform.
Keeping up to date with all these features across several projects can be challenging. How do you make sure that all your projects can be upgraded to the latest version of Gradle? What if you have thousands of projects and hundreds of engineers? How can you abstract common tasks for them and make sure that new releases work as expected?
At Netflix, we built Nebula, a collection of Gradle plugins that helps engineers remove boilerplate in Gradle build files, and makes building software the Netflix way easy. This reduces the cognitive load on developers, allowing them to focus on writing code.
In this talk, I’ll share with you our philosophy on how to build JVM artifacts and the pieces that help us boost the productivity of engineers at Netflix. I’ll talk about:
- What is Nebula
- What are the common problems we face and try to solve
- How we distribute it to every JVM engineer
- How we ensure that Nebula/Gradle changes do not break builds so we can ship new features with confidence at Netflix

openCPQ - A React-Based Product-Configuration Toolkit
The talk presents the new open-source project openCPQ for the web-based configuration of complex products. In contrast to popular commercial configuration tools openCPQ
- uses the browser not only for the UI but also for the business logic, which makes configurators extremely fast by avoiding round trips to the server,
- supports modelling of configuration rules embedded in JavaScript, which permits user-defined abstractions in a flexible way, and
- recomputes the configuration result from scratch instead of incrementally propagating changes in the user input, which fits nicely with React's architecture and makes openCPQ a light-weight framework.

The theme of your website has the capacity for beautiful, semantic markup...and also the hacky HTML soup. You can build a new theme by downloading a free theme and tearing out its guts--or you can learn how to become a theme surgeon.
In this session you will learn two key techniques needed to build a successful theme: crime scene investigation (identifying Drupal page elements in your design files) and power tools for copy-cat theming (things you need to recreate your design using Drupal). From start to finish we will transform a design file into a Drupal theme. With special attention given to your all-important questions: how do I save time with grid-based design? Should I use Panels? How do I make this bit of stuff appear next to that bit? Yah, but how do I start?

Emma Jane Hogbin is well known in the Drupal community for her engaging presentations and kickass theming book, Front End Drupal. She is currently working on her second book, Drupal: A user's guide which is due out shortly after DrupalCon. Through her training company, Design to Theme, emmajane has empowered thousands of people to create the Drupal site of their dreams.
Intended audience
Small business site builders who partner with graphic designers but have no idea how to make Drupal look like a design file. Intermediate themers who start with a free Drupal theme that looks "close" to the final site and then start hacking to make their theme. The audience currently does not use base themes and are frustrated at how complicated all of the code is. They are looking for shortcuts and some quick-fix solutions to make theming faster and more profitable.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
