1. UAB research illuminates genetic cause of pulmonary
fibrosis - Birmingham science news
Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Tulane University published work at
PloS One (Public interstitial pulmonary fibrosis Library of Science) that elucidates the variable role
of Thy-1 (a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol-anchored glycoprotein) in lung fibroblast development.
"Immunohistochemical analyses of human lung sections reveal that fibroblasts within fibroblastic
foci of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis do not express Thy-1, whereas most fibroblasts from normal
lungs are Thy-1+. In a murine lung model of bleomycin-induced fibrosis, Thy-1 deficient mice
develop more severe lung fibrosis in comparison to wildtype littermates. These findings underscore
the biological significance of fibroblast-expressed Thy-1 in inflammation-associated fibrogenesis.
However, the molecular mechanism underlying Thy-1 modulated inflammatory responses remains
largely unknown."
"Our findings reveal that MEF (Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts) Thy-1 subsets differ in TNF--
-activated gene expression."
The research presents a targeted genetic pathway for drug development specific to pulmonary
fibrosis and other inflammatory diseases.
