Unified Development Ordinance: Passed in 2002 and mandates compact, mixed-use development at a zero setback in order to create walkable and pedestrian-oriented places; Requires extensive landscaping (street trees, parking lot islands, landscape buffers) for all development;  Requires sidewalks and encourages permeable pavements and materials; and Requires a maximum number of parking spaces in PMUD areas, typically 3 per 1,000 SF;
Unified Development Ordinance: Permits solar panels, wind turbines (as a Conditional Use), rain barrels and rain gardens; Requires energy-efficient outdoor lighting; All development projects capable of achieving LEED for Neighborhood Development ® (LEED-ND) certification just by following the UDO; and Staff typically requests that projects be LEED® certified, that a “good faith” effort for permeable pavements and green roofs be pursued, and that bike racks and bus stop benches be installed.
Revise and adopt updates to the Upper Arlington Master Plan to include more sustainable objectives and guidelines; Update Carbon Footprint Assessment; Update City facilities to more energy-efficient lighting and window systems; Update Stormwater and Floodplain regulations in the UDO per the Stormwater Management Plan; Install bicycle boulevards, bike lanes and paths, more sidewalks; Continue to explore solar thermal or PV installations on City facilities; Collaborate with other Central Ohio communities to implement anti-idling policies and group purchase of green fleets; and Adopt recycled paper-only policy and adopt policy to only use environmentally-friendly materials and products.
