This document describes two types of electron microscopes: transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) which pass an electron beam through a specimen to form an image based on electron deflection, and scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) which record electrons reflected off a specimen's surface to produce 3D images without requiring thin specimens.
