This document summarizes a student project called Tūtville, which is an extension for Adobe Photoshop CS5 that helps users bookmark, share, and search for Photoshop tutorials. It discusses user research that found a need for better tutorial organization and discovery tools. The project then covers the design, development, testing and demo of a prototype Tūtville extension, including features like searching, filtering, recommendations, and user profiles. Lessons learned focused on the benefits of user testing and challenges of implementation.
Over the past year, the Drupal community has focused on improving the Drupal user experience, making Drupal more friendly to a less technical user-base and rolling those improvements into Drupal 7. Join Dries Buytaert, the original creator and project lead for the Drupal open source web publishing and collaboration platform and Jeff Noyes, Acquia's director of user experience and contributor to the D7UX team contributor, for a one-hour tour of the new Drupal 7 usability features and the driving forces behind them. This will be the first in a series of Drupal 7 Webinars hosted by Dries this year.
Prototyping - the what, why and how at the University of EdinburghNeil Allison
Edited highlights of my prototyping training session. These slides are essentially the intro to a 3 hour practical, collaborative learning experience using pencil/paper and Balsamiq. The slides cover:
- What is prototyping?
- Prototypes and the design process
- Example projects
- How to prototype
- Case study: Website search results page
- Balsamiq demo
Mozilla Browsing History Design ChallengeKatie McCurdy
Initial instructions and plan for our fall 2009 Mozilla Design Challenge, the topic of which is "browsing history." These slides are for the first event, to be held 9/17/09.
Talk given to Edinburgh College of Art Design Informatics group on 7th November 2013. The talk focused on giving a very brief intro to participatory design, and then talked through three case studies of participatory design with older citizens.

It's All About the Experience: What I’ve learnt from talking to thousands of ...Suzanne Dergacheva
Use cases for Drupal are changing and so are criteria for selecting a web development platform. This is a challenge for the community as well as individuals and companies that use Drupal. We can learn a lot by looking at the Drupal experience from different perspectives and thinking about the personas of people who interact with Drupal.
I’ll talk about what we can learn from design thinking and user experience techniques, and what I’ve learnt from talking to new Drupal users and teaching Drupal. And I’ll share my thoughts about how we can adapt our approach and mindset to make Drupal relevant to our clients, colleagues, and communities.
How well do you think your product team takes what they learn from their users and puts it into the next iteration of the product? How well does your team come to a common understanding of what the next iteration of the product will look like and then build a product that reflects that common understanding?
These two problems — improving your product with user research and effective team collaboration — can both be solved with a design tool called User Story Mapping.
The Visual Media Service (VMS) provided by the ARIADNEplus Project enables large datasets to be processed and displayed seamlessly and quickly, enabling end users to view and explore in detail:
3D objects ranging from size from a few mm to tens m, e.g. from beads up to statues and friezes.
Large, high resolution images (that can’t usually be easily displayed online), e.g. gigapixel photographs of frescoes, paintings, or any other planar artwork.
Relightable images (RTI and PTM) commonly used on artefacts such as coins.
Sets of images such as a time series or sequence of pages relating to the same item.
The VMS technology provides a full set of interactive tools for the displayed object(s) and can be accessed for free through the ARIADNE Portal. As such, this service provides a valuable tool for the publication, exploration and dissemination of various aspects of Cultural Heritage.
Julie Grundy gives an overview of user experience Design, why it's important, guiding principles, UX research overview, and tactics used by UX professionals. November 2015.

During a time when 10% of the country is out of work (and presumably looking for a new job), how do you stand out from the crowd to get noticed and land an interview?
Apply marketing tips and tricks to:
* Find jobs before they ever even exist
* Manage your resume and portfolio in a way that makes it quick and easy to customize for every job
* Build a consistent look and feel for your resume and portfolio
* Add that extra WOW factor with cheap (or free) and easy technology tools
VideoManager: Using Flash Technology and HTML5 together for University Media ...Joseph Labrecque
VideoManager emerged at the University of Denver from the need to organize all public videos at the university in a central repository to improve tracking, management, and communication. The final outcome is a central web-based video portal used to showcase all significant public university videos.
This session is an overview of the University of Denver VideoManager application and covers:
Technologies involved; HTML5 and Flash Technology working together for an ideal user experience
Unique server configuration; ColdFusion, server-based Adobe AIR, and Flash Media Server
Usage by university videographers, staff and faculty contributors, and students
Expected teaching and learning outcomes
Using Data and Customer Insights to Drive DesignKatie McCurdy
Andy Campbell and I presented on how we at the UVM Medical Center have used quantitative and qualitative data - analytics, heatmaps, interviews, surveys, and usability testing results - to make design changes and help set our team up well for a total redesign. We give specific examples of how what we learned translated to design tweaks, and we do a deep dive on how we've used personas and design principles in our process.

Participatory Design Workshop at the UX Strategies Summit 2015Katie McCurdy
Susan Dybbs and Katie McCurdy co-led a workshop to help attendees at the UX Strategies Summit learn about Participatory Design. We led the group through exercises intended to help them understand what it is like to be a participant in a participatory design session, and then we helped them understand what went into that exercise and how to plan their own session. I've captured resources about participatory design, for anyone who is interested, here: http://katiemccurdy.com/participatory-design/
Designing with Empathy: How user research can help you make better productsKatie McCurdy
[Talk presented at UX Burlington in June, 2015]
You're under the gun. You have deadlines, developers are waiting on you, and even though you know you should probably talk to your intended users at some point, it just doesn't feel possible to fit into your workflow. And hey, if Henry Ford had asked his customers what they wanted, they would have said 'a faster horse,' right?
Ouch! There are a lot of misunderstandings about what user research actually is, how to do it, its cost, and the value it brings to the product design process. In this talk, Katie covers these basics and presents some specific, interface-level examples of how up-front user research and mid-project usability testing have helped improve designs and create products that people love. You'll walk away with tips for advocating for and incorporating user research into your next project in a cost-effective way, and you’ll understand the powerful difference between building empathy with your customers, and ‘doing what they say.’
All Together Now: Leveraging Participatory Design to Create Innovative and Us...Katie McCurdy
This workshop was presented at the Healthcare Experience Refactored conference by Susan Dybbs and Katie McCurdy.
***
Dusty, unused PHRs. Complex EHRs out of line with clinicians’ workflows. Clearly many of our best attempts to improve healthcare with digital tools are failing. It’s not for a lack of time or money—it is because the design of these tools is not rooted in users’ needs, behaviors, preferences, or even ergonomics. Now is the time to bring the end user back into the design process.
A Participatory Design session brings end users together to help them articulate their needs and generate solutions. When conducted throughout the design process, this method allows us to create delightful experiences that truly address user’s needs, mental models and context – and that they actually want to use.
Susan and Katie will leverage their experience as User Experience Designers and Researchers to help you get acquainted with the theory and practice behind Participatory Design. By the end of this hands-on workshop, you’ll have a good understanding of participatory design techniques; you’ll understand when participatory design is useful, and you’ll have experienced this technique first-hand as a participant. Whether your end users are patients, healthcare professionals, or administrators, you’ll walk away with the basic skills to conduct your own Participatory Design workshops.
This session is for anyone who wants to understand how to bring the end user’s voice into the design process.
