At TUI Cruises, a high level of availability and security are essential for IT systems at sea, and also pose a special challenge. Very fast and expensive shipyard time slots are needed for installation and maintenance. A consistent internet connection cannot always be guaranteed during remote maintenance at sea. Because of the monthly costs of about $50,000 for a 4-Mbit line, larger data transactions are not possible in any case.
After TUI Cruises adopted DataCore SANsymphony they benefited from:
- High level of availability, thanks to synchronous mirroring
- Transparent failover: if a section of a data center fails, the other side automatically takes over
- Scalable in terms of capacity, output, and performance
- Easy to use on-site, with worldwide remote management by the partner

Zero Downtime, Zero Touch Stretch Clusters from Software-Defined StorageDataCore Software
Business continuity, especially across data centers in nearby locations often depends on complicated scripts, manual intervention and numerous checklists. Those error-prone processes are exponentially more difficult when the data storage equipment differs between sites.
Such difficulties force many organizations to settle for partial disaster recovery measures, conceding data loss and hours of downtime during occasional facility outages.
In this webcast and live demo, you’ll learn about:
• Software-defined storage services capable of continuously mirroring data in
real-time between unlike storage devices.
• Non-disruptive failover between stretched cluster requiring zero touch.
• Rapid restoration of normal conditions when the facilities come back up.

How to Integrate Hyperconverged Systems with Existing SANsDataCore Software
Hyperconverged systems offer a great deal of promise and yet come with a set of limitations.
While they allow enterprises to re-integrate system components into a single enclosure and reduce the physical complexity, floor space and cost of supporting a workload in the data center, they also often will not support existing storage in local SANs or offered by cloud service providers.
However, there are solutions available to address these challenges and allow hyperconverged systems to realize their promise. Sign up to discover:
• What are hyperconverged systems?
• What challenges do they pose?
• What should the ideal solution to those challenges look like?
• A solution that helps integrate hyperconverged systems with existing SANs
How to Avoid Disasters via Software-Defined Storage Replication & Site RecoveryDataCore Software
Shifting weather patterns across the globe force us to re-evaluate data protection practices in locations we once thought immune from hurricanes, flooding and other natural disasters.
Offsite data replication combined with advanced site recovery methods should top your list.
In this webcast and live demo, you’ll learn about:
• Software-defined storage services that continuously replicate data, containers and virtual machine images over long distances
• Differences between secondary sites you own or rent vs. virtual destinations in public Clouds
• Techniques that help you test and fine tune recovery measures without disrupting production workloads
• Transferring responsibilities to the remote site
• Rapid restoration of normal operations at the primary facilities when conditions permit
Despite years of industry advocacy, cloud adoption in larger firms remains slow. There are many logos for many vendors dotting the cloud technology landscape and many competing architectures. But there are also few standards that guarantee the interoperability of different approaches.
The latest buzz in enterprise cloud technology is around “hybrid cloud data centers” in which large enterprises “build their base” – that is, their core infrastructure, possibly as a “private cloud” – and “buy their burst” – that is, obtain additional public cloud- based resources and services to augment their on-premises capabilities during periods of peak workload handling, for application development, or for business continuity.
Ultimately, the adoption of cloud architecture will be gated by how successfully organizations are able to leverage emerging technologies in a secure and reliable manner and whether the resulting infrastructure actually delivers in the key areas of cost-containment, risk reduction and improved productivity.
Regardless of whether you use a direct attached storage array, or a network-attached storage (NAS) appliances, or a storage area network (SAN) to host your data, if this data infrastructure is not designed for high availability, then the data it stores is not highly available by extension, application availability is at risk – regardless of server clustering.
The purpose of this paper is to outline best practices for improving overall business application availability by building a highly available data infrastructure.
Download this paper to:

- Identify the differences between Hardware and Software-defined infrastructures in terms of Availability
- Learn how to build a Highly Available data infrastructure using Hyper-converged storage
With Thorntons having so many locations—operating across two time zones—basic store functionality is imperative and the reason why Thorntons is such a write-intensive enterprise. Everything that Thorntons does at the store level is considered “mission critical” and is contingent upon system uptime due to their 24/7/365 operation. Attaining non-stop business operations as well as better performance management and capacity management is what drove Thorntons to explore new alternatives to its Dell Compellent SANs that were deployed previously.
After Thorntons adopted DataCore SANsymphony they benefited from:
- Zero-downtime with SANsymphony software-defined storage deployed as two synchronous mirrors
- 50% faster backups (including VMware VMs and SQL
databases), which enables the number of full backups from one to three times a week
- Significant risk reduction attained due to the ability to replicate volumes instantaneously to both the primary and secondary sites
Top 3 Challenges Impacting Your Data and How to Solve ThemDataCore Software
Demands on your data have grown exponentially more difficult for IT departments to manage. Companies that fail to address this new reality risk not only data outages, but a significant loss of business. In this white paper we review the top 3 critical challenges impacting your data (maintaining uninterrupted service, scaling with increased capacity, and improving storage performance) and how to solve them.
Download this white paper to learn about:
- How to maintain data availability in the event of a catastrophic failure within the storage architecture due to hardware malfunctions, site failures, regional disasters, or user errors.
- How to optimize existing storage capacity and safely scale your storage infrastructure up and out to stay ahead of changing storage requirements.
- How to speed up response when reading and writing to disk while reducing latency to dramatically improve storage performance.
Business Continuity for Mission Critical ApplicationsDataCore Software
Unplanned interruption events, a.k.a. “disasters,” hit virtually all data centers at one time or another. While the preponderance of annual downtime results from interruptions that have a limited or localized scope of impact, IT planners must also prepare for the possibility of a catastrophic event with a broader geographical footprint.
Such disasters cannot be circumvented simply by using high availability configurations in servers or storage. What is needed, especially for mission-critical applications and databases, are strategies that can help organizations prevail in the wake of “big footprint” disasters, but that can also be implemented in a more limited way in response to interruption events with a more limited impact profile.
DataCore Software’s storage platform provides several capabilities for data protection and disaster recovery that are well-suited to today’s most mission-critical databases and applications.
Dynamic Hyper-Converged Future Proof Your Data CenterDataCore Software
IT organizations are continuously striving to reduce the amount of time and effort to deploy new resources for the business. Data center and remote office infrastructures are often complex and rigid to deploy, causing operational delays. As a result, many IT organizations are looking at a hyper-converged infrastructure.
Read this whitepaper to discover that a hyper-converged approach is flexible and easy to deploy and offers:
• Lower CAPEX because of lower up-front prices for infrastructure
• Lower OPEX through reductions in operational expenses and personnel
• Faster time-to-value for new business needs
Community Health Network Delivers Unprecedented Availability for Critical Hea...DataCore Software
The use of DataCore Software-Defined Storage resulted in providing CHN with a highly available infrastructure, improved application processing, and the total elimination of storage related downtime. Considering that CHN is using the SANsymphony software to virtualize and manage over 450TBs of data, with an environment supporting 14,000+ users, the seamless availability of all that data is certainly impressive.
With DataCore SANsymphony now in operation at Mission Community Hospital. storage management is less labor-intensive, systems are easily managed and data is simple to migrate when necessary. The overall cost effectiveness of DataCore storage virtualization software platform and DataCore's ability to make the physical storage completely "agnostic" so that hardware is interchangeable are just two of the great benefits for the hospital's IT team.

Integrating Hyper-converged Systems with Existing SANs DataCore Software
Hyper-converged systems offer a great deal of promise and yet come with a set of limitations. While they allow enterprises to re-integrate system components into a single enclosure and reduce the physical complexity, floor space and cost of supporting a workload in the data center, they also often will not support existing storage in local SANs or offered by cloud service providers. There are solutions available to address these challenges and allow hyper-converged systems to realize their promise. During this session you will learn:
- What are hyper-converged systems?
- What challenges do they pose?
- What should the ideal solution to those challenges look like?
- About a solution that helps integrate hyper-converged systems with existing SANs
Next to performance and scalability, cost efficiency is one of the top three reasons most companies cite as their motivations for acquiring storage technology. Businesses are struggling to control the storage costs, and to reduce OPEX costs for administrative staff, infrastructure and data management, and environmental and energy. Every storage vendor, it seems, including most of the Software-defined Storage purveyors, are promising ROIs that require nothing short of a suspension of disbelief.
In this presentation, Jon Toigo of the Data Management Institute digs out the root causes of high storage costs and sketches out a prescription for addressing them. He is joined by Ibrahim “Ibby” Rahmani of DataCore Software, who will address the specific cost efficiency advantages that are being realized by customers of Software-defined Storage
What will $0.08 get you with storage? Typically, not much. But, on $0.08 will change the way you think about storage and cause you to question everything storage vendors have told you. Find out more in this presentation
The Need for Speed: Parallel I/O and the New Tick-Tock in ComputingDataCore Software
The virtualization wave is beginning to stall as companies confront application performance problems that can no longer be addressed effectively, even in the short term, by the expensive deployment of silicon storage, brute force caching, or complex log structuring schemes. Simply put, hypervisor-based computing has hit the performance wall established decades ago when the industry shifted from multi-processor parallel computing to unicore/serial bus server computing.
In this Presentation Jon Toigo and DataCore will help you learn how your business can benefit from our Adaptive Parallel I/O software by:
- Harnessing the untapped power of today's multi-core processing systems and efficient CPU memory to create a new class of storage servers and hyper-converged systems
- Enabling order of magnitude improvements in I/O throughput
- Reducing the cost per I/O significantly
- Increasing the number of virtual machines that an individual server can host without application performance slowdowns

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

TUI Case Study
1. The Data Infrastructure Software Company
CASE STUDY
datacore.comEmpowering real-time, always-on data
July 2016 saw the launch of Mein Schiff 5, the newest cruise ship in the TUI Cruises
fleet. The IT infrastructure for the first five members of the fleet was designed on
land by BSH IT Solutions, implemented on board within a very narrow time frame,
and maintained at sea via the BSH data centers in Greven. DataCore’s software-
defined SANsymphony™ storage platform delivers highly available and high-
performance storage capacity for VMware, SQL and Exchange, among others.
The company: TUI Cruises
TUI Cruises, headquartered in Hamburg, was founded in April 2008. The company
is a joint venture between TUI AG from Hanover and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.,
the world’s second-largest cruise company. The cruise brand TUI Cruises, which
combines the features of a shipping company and a tour operator under one roof,
is primarily aimed at the German market. The first member of the TUI Cruises fleet,
Mein Schiff 1, was acquired and put into operation in May 2009. Mein Schiff 2
followed in May 2011. After that, the first new ship was Mein Schiff 3, built three
years later, followed by Mein Schiff 4 in June 2015 and Mein Schiff 5 in July 2016.
Mein Schiff 6 will be put into operation in June 2017. There will be two more new
ships by 2019, which are being built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. With
growth rates of more than ten percent annually, cruises are the fastest-growing
market in the tourism industry. The TUI Cruises concept uses its own ships, which
offer a wide range of options, high standards and first-class service. The company
hopes this approach will finally bridge the gap between traditional cruise ships and
club ships. In planning its routes, TUI Cruises prioritizes diversity and individuality
– in addition to trips to the western and eastern Mediterranean and various routes
along the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and Central America, these comfortable
ships also explore the Baltic Sea, the Nordic region, Great Britain and Iceland. Other
travel areas include the Arabian Gulf, Asia, and beginning in the fall of 2017 also
North America, departing from New York.

About TUI Cruises
TUI Cruises, headquartered
in Hamburg, was founded in
April 2008. The company is
a joint venture between TUI
AG from Hanover and Royal
Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the
world’s second-largest cruise
company. The cruise brand
TUI Cruises, which combines
the features of a shipping
company and a tour operator
under one roof, is primarily
aimed at the German market.
The first member of the TUI
Cruises fleet, Mein Schiff 1,
was acquired and put into
operation in May 2009.

The starting situation
“Everything works differently when you’re on the ship,” reports Niels Heider, the
responsible Project Manager at BSH IT Solutions. A high level of availability and
security are essential for IT systems at sea, and also pose a special challenge.
Very fast and expensive shipyard time slots are needed for installation and
maintenance. A consistent internet connection cannot always be guaranteed
during remote maintenance at sea. Because of the monthly costs of about
$50,000 for a 4-Mbit line, larger data transactions are not possible in any case.
“Once you’re at sea, the IT systems need to be absolutely reliable. That’s why
we only work with providers and products that we trust 100%. That includes
DataCore and SANsymphony,” explains Niels Heider. BSH IT Solutions has
adapted especially well to these circumstances as a provider of IT infrastructure
solutions. Seven certified DCIEs (DataCore Certified Implementation Engineers)
demonstrate the company’s correspondingly high DataCore expertise. As a
result, the cruise company hired BSH IT Solutions to implement the server and
storage infrastructure on the newly built Mein Schiff 3, Mein Schiff 4, Mein
Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6 as well as replacing the IT systems on the two earlier
ships.
The solution: precise planning
Planning, preparation and implementation took about a year for each new
construction project. Each process involved the following phases, in coordination
with the complex overall organization at TUI Cruises:
1. First “staging” in Hamburg: about nine months before the launch,
suppliers and service providers gathered to assemble the IT infrastructure
components, install the systems and perform acceptance tests.
2. Second “staging” in Turku: during this three-to-four-month phase,
followed by a “sea trial,” large parts of the IT infrastructure were once
again assembled and underwent as many practical tests as possible on the
premises of the Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku Oy.
3. Because of the tight timeline, the engineers only have a few days for final
implementation on board. On the ship, systems are installed in separate
fire and water zones, on different decks, and in the data centers located at
the bow and stern.
The entire IT infrastructure is designed redundantly, and is synchronously
mirrored using the DataCore software. Mein Schiff 3 is equipped with a 10-
Gbit fiber channel infrastructure, which is redundantly connected to a DataCore
node for each side with the latest version of SANsymphony, V10, on HP Proliant
DL380 as well as an HP D2700 disk shelf with SAS disk capacity of 20 TB for
each side. For the more recent Mein Schiff 4, a Dell PowerEdge R720XD with
a PowerVault MD1200 extension was chosen as a hardware platform for the
DataCore nodes, using a similar structure.
BSH impressed us both
with its skills in server
and storage virtualization
as well as its clear
implementation concept.
SANsymphony offers
an outstanding price-
performance ratio. The
numerous integrated
technologies helped us
successfully migrate
the data centers; they
solve our current storage
problems and give us a
high level of flexibility and
investment security for
the future.

CASE STUDY
The storage environment is connected to four VMware ESXi hosts on HP or
Dell hardware as well as two Veeam backup servers to back up the 50 virtual
machines. Separately from the navigation infrastructure, these run all of the
systems needed for the cruise, tourism and administrative operations. In
particular, Exchange, SQL, file services and Active Directory play an important
role here. Completely redundant virtual structures using VMware and DataCore
were also implemented in the existing infrastructures of the first two cruise
ships.
For Mein Schiff 2, the solution was installed on an existing HP C3000
Bladecenter with P2000 storage expansion. Mein Schiff 1, by contrast, is
constructed analogously to Mein Schiff 3. This demanded a logistical tour de
force from the specialists at BSH IT Solutions, since there was only a ten-day
window available at the shipyard to replace all of the hardware, implement the
software components and migrate the data.
The benefits: scalability in terms of capacity, performance and
functionality
DataCore SANsymphony synchronously mirrors data, regardless of the
manufacturer, model or technology of the connected storage hardware (disk,
SSD), in order to ensure a high level of availability for systems on the ships.
New and existing storage hardware can be easily integrated, and its lifespan is
extended. If a section of a data center fails, the other side automatically takes
over (transparent auto failover) and resynchs the system when it is restarted
(auto failback). In fact, one of the ships did experience a hardware-related
failure in a section of the data center. But thanks to the DataCore technology,
there were no consequences. The DataCore nodes resynched afterward. “We
didn’t notice the DataCore failover and failback until that point, but the safety
mechanisms had already kicked in early on and protected the customer from any
downtime, data loss or noticeable performance slowdowns.
The DataCore software proved that it is 100% worthy of our trust and that
of the customer,” comments Project Manager Niels Heider.SANsymphony also
offers additional fully developed storage services that can be used for data
management and backup. Well-engineered caching technology optimizes the
performance of the underlying hardware, which means no SSDs are needed
at this point. Together with the integrated auto tiering, however, even better
performance can be achieved in the future if needed. The experts from BSH
IT Solutions believe it is too risky to use thin provisioning on a ship. Like auto
tiering, snapshots and continuous data protection (CDP) are already in place to
back up important systems if necessary.
The benefits at a glance:
• High level of availability thanks to synchronous mirroring
• Transparent failover
• Scalable in terms of capacity, output and performance
• Easy to use on site, with worldwide remote management by the partner
DataCore’s scalability
in terms of capacity,
performance and
functionality gives us
the flexibility we need
to respond to further
challenges, whether
it is on the ships or
for the entire fleet. In
addition, SANsymphony
has demonstrated its
absolute reliability. We
plan to keep expanding
our “Mein Schiff” fleet,
and we will continue to
rely on BSH IT Solutions
and SANsymphony.
