Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. Sejarah
• Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa atau biasa disingkat PBB (bahasa Inggris:
United Nations atau disingkat UN) adalah sebuah organisasi internasional
yang anggotanya hampir seluruh negara di dunia. Lembaga ini dibentuk
untuk memfasilitasi dalam hukum internasional, pengamanan
internasional, lembaga ekonomi, dan perlindungan sosial.
• Perserikatan Bangsa-bangsa didirikan di San Francisco pada 24 Oktober
1945 setelah Konferensi Dumbarton Oaks di Washington, DC, namun
Sidang Umum yang pertama - dihadiri wakil dari 51 negara - baru
berlangsung pada 10 Januari 1946 (di Church House, London). Dari 1919
hingga 1946, terdapat sebuah organisasi yang mirip, bernama Liga
Bangsa-Bangsa, yang bisa dianggap sebagai pendahulu PBB.
• Organisasi ini memiliki enam organ utama : Majelis Umum (majelis
musyawarah utama),Dewan Keamanan (untuk memutuskan resolusi
tertentu untuk perdamaian dan keamanan),Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial

•Enam bahasa resmi PBB, yang digunakan dalam pertemuan antar
pemerintah dan pembuatan dokumen-dokumen, adalah
Arab, Cina, Inggris, Perancis, Rusia, dan Spanyol. Sekretariat dan
Dewan Keamanan menggunakan dua bahasa kerja, bahasa Inggris dan
Perancis, sedangkan Majelis Umum menggunakan tiga bahasa
kerja, bahasa Inggris, Perancis dan Spanyol.
•Empat dari bahasa resmi adalah bahasa nasional dari anggota tetap
Dewan Keamanan (Britania Raya dan Amerika Serikat masing-masing
menggukanan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa resmi secara de
facto), Spanyol dan Arab adalah bahasa dari dua blok terbesar
bahasa resmi di luar dari anggota permanen (Spanyol merupakan
bahasa resmi di 20 negara, sedangkan Arab di 26).
•Lima dari bahasa resmi dipilih ketika PBB didirikan; Arab
ditambahkan kemudian pada tahun 1973. Editorial PBB Manual
menyatakan bahwa standar untuk dokumen-dokumen bahasa Inggris
adalah menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dari Inggris (British-English)

•Saat ini ada 193 negara anggota Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa, termasuk semua negara
yang menyatakan kemerdekaannya masing-masing dan diakui kedaulatannya secara
internasional, kecuali Vatikan (Tahta Suci, yang memegang kedaulatan atas
Vatikan, adalah pengamat permanen).
•Piagam PBB menguraikan aturan untuk keanggotaan:
Keanggotaan di PBB terbuka untuk semua negara cinta damai lainnya yang
menerima kewajiban yang termuat dalam Piagam ini dan, menurut penilaian
Organisasi, mampu dan mau melaksanakan kewajiban-kewajiban ini.
Penerimaan dari negara tersebut kepada keanggotaan di PBB akan dipengaruhi oleh
keputusan Majelis Umum atas rekomendasi Dewan Keamanan.
•Kelompok 77 di PBB merupakan koalisi longgar dari negara-negara
berkembang, yang dirancang untuk mempromosikan kepentingan kolektif ekonomi
anggotanya dan menciptakan kemampuan bernegosiasi bersama di PBB yang
disempurnakan.
•Ada 77 anggota pendiri organisasi, namun organisasi akhirnya diperluas menjadi 130
negara anggota. Kelompok ini didirikan pada tanggal 15 Juni 1964 oleh "Deklarasi
Bersama Tujuh puluh Tujuh Negara" yang dikeluarkan pada Konferensi PBB tentang
Perdagangan dan Pembangunan (UNCTAD). Pertemuan pertama dilaksanakan di Aljir
pada tahun 1967, dimana Piagam Aljir diadopsi dan dasar untuk struktur kelembagaan
permanen dimulai

3. Tujuan PBB
•Tujuan dari PBB yang tercantum dalam pasal 1 piagam PBB adalah
sebagai berikut:
1. Memelihara perdamaian dan keamanan internasional
2. Memajukan hubungan persahabatan antar bangsa berdasarkan
penghargaan atas persamaan hak dan penentuan nasib sendiri
3. Menciptakan kerjasama internasional dalam menyelesaikan
persoalan- persoalan internasional di lapangan ekonomi, social dan
kebudayaan
4. Menjadikan PBB sebagai pusat bagi penyelarasan segala tindakan
bangsa-bangsa dalam mencapai tujuan.
Tujuan PBB tercantum dalam pasal 1 piagam PBB tersebut
dapat di singkat “ to maintain international peace and security”. Tujuan
PBB juga bukan hanya untuk menyelesaikan perselisihan namun juga
sebagai promoting the common interest of members in
peace, security, and well being.untuk mencapai tujuan yang tercantum
dalam pasal 1.

4. Asas PBB
•PBB menganut tujuh asas seperti tertuang dalam pasal 2 piagam
perdamaian berikut ini.
1. PBB di dirikan atas dasar persamaan kedaulatan dari semua anggota
2. Semua anggota dengan iktikad baik harus melaksanakan kewajiban-
kewajiban yang telah di setujui sesuai dengan ketentuan piagam
3. Sengketa-sengketa internasional akan di selesaikan dengan cara
damai sehingga tidak membahayakan, perdamaian, keamanan, dan
keadilan nasional.
4. Dalam melaksanakan hubungan internasional, semua anggota harus
mencegah tindakan-tindakan yang berupa ancaman atau kekerasan
terhadap kedaulatan atau kemerdekaan politik Negara lain.
5. Semua anggota harus membantu PBB dalam tindakan-tindakan yang
di ambilberdasarkan ketentuan piagam.
6. PBB akan menjaga agar Negara-negara yang bukan anggota bertindak
sesuai dengan asas-asas yang di tetapkan oleh PBB.
7. PBB tidak akan mengadakan campur tangan dalam masalah-masalah
dalam negeri dari setiap anggota atau mengharuskan penyelesaian
masalah itu menurut ketentuan piagam.
