Torquing springs (vertical
problem)
Intrusion forces on the posterior teeth especially
the molars
Intrusion force buccal to center of resistance of these
teeth lead to intrusion of buccal cusps
And transverse expansion of posterior teeth

To overcome the problem of imbalance of
the forces and moments in the anterior
and posterior end of the base archwire it
was suggested to use
Conventional 0.018” or 0.020” Special plus
Refined Begg0.018” or 0.020” Premium wire

Design modifications
To prevent the deepening of the anteriors
Bends are given distal to canines and mesial to
canines.
To prevent molar flaring
archwires are constricted
To prevent anchor loss
Class II elastic are used
25. B.D.C.H. www.indiandentalacademy.com
Therefore, during stage III all the couples
(moments) are restricted to the anterior
end of the archwire, which causes
generation of the high moments in the
anterior segment,
i.e. the base archwire is loaded with unequal
force systems at either ends.
27. B.D.C.H. www.indiandentalacademy.com
Solution:
• To reduce the auxillary springs (since all
springs create a couple) in the anterior
segment or to add equivalent number
(amount) of the couple in the posterior
segment.
28. B.D.C.H. www.indiandentalacademy.com
The technique of reduction of the need forreduction of the need for
the couplethe couple in the anterior segment during
stage III will not be discussed here!
However, we are suggesting the second
option, i.e. increasing the moment in theincreasing the moment in the
posterior segmentposterior segment.

Therefore just by incorporation of the
anchor bend just mesial to the molar tube
(very similar to stage I anchor bend) we
are able to control:
Vertical intrusion forces of the auxiliaries
Anterior pull on the dentition (esp. the
proclination of the upper anteriors)
Transverse problem of flaring of the molars.
33. B.D.C.H. www.indiandentalacademy.com
• Therefore with a simple biomechanical solution
we are able to avoid the use of Class II elastics
which just adds to the complications of the Stage
III mechanotherapy of Begg.

“History of Orthodontics is replete with
instances of rediscovering of virtues of concepts
and applications long overlooked, forgotten and
buried under the debris of the so-called new
developments.”

“One often wonders why they were ignored in
the first instance at all.
Was it a deficient understanding on the part
of the multitude, or was it the sheep mentality
to blindly follow a few powerful individuals
who were trying to promote their own interests
by denouncing everything else?”

“Are we not falling in a similar trap when we
are ignoring the Begg appliance?
If we have enough wisdom, we should avoid
repeating the blunders committed in the past by
others.”
Jayade V.P. “REFINED BEGG FOR MODERN TIMES”
This is a mess if you like to see all the forces and couples together. (Here Blue = Torquing auxillary and Red is for Uprighting spring)
Therefore (next slide) we will just show the resultant moment generated.
