This document describes traditional articles of clothing worn in Asturias, Spain. It discusses women's shirts, outer skirts called sayas that varied in length based on social class, underskirts called refajos that were used to create full skirts, waist-mounted pouches called faltriqueras, sleeveless jackets called justillos or cotyas, warmer doublets, short jackets called chaquetillas, aprons, small cloaks called dengues, headscarves, trousers called calzóns, waistcoats, coats, cummerbunds, winter hats called monteras, tights, indoor shoes called escarpines, and wooden clogs called madre

2.  The shirt
The shirt was the only
undergarment worn
by women.
In the eastern part of
Asturias sleeves are
ornated with laces
and embroidered
ribbons.

3.  The Saya
Saya was the outer skirt. Its length was determined
by the origin of its owner.
Girls from the country wore shorter skirts than girls
from villages. A long skirt was not handy as it got
caught in the vegetation of the paths.

4.  Refajo
Refajos were the skirts women wore under the
outer skirt. Its mission was to get a full skirt
and distort the female figure: a bulky hip
was a sign of a wealthy family. For this
reason, the number of refaxos could range
from one to eight.

5.  La faltriquera
It was a small cloth bag that was
tied to the waist to store small
items as money, cigarrettes or
chestnuts.
It was placed on the refaxos but
under the outer skirt.

6.  El
Justillo/Cotilla
The Justiyu was a
sleeveless jacket worn
on top of the shirt and
skirt. Its function was
adjusting and
tightening the waist
and chest.
It was fit with laces
threaded in
buttonholes in the

7. Jubón or doublet
When it was cold the doublet, tight jacket,
replaced the justiyu. It was also worn on the
shirt and skirt.

8.  La chaquetilla
This short jacket was really a winter coat. It is
a modern garnment which was adapted to
the traditional clothes. It was dressed on the
justiyu.
It was popular in the south-west of Asturias,
although it was also used in other areas.

9.  Mandil or Apron
All women wore aprons on
their skirts and justiyu. They
were made in different
patterns and sizes.
During the week they usually
wore big and long aprons to
protect their skirts from
dirtiness. On Sundays and
special festivities they
showed off small, even
embroidered aprons.

10.  El dengue
Its a very small cloak which
was worn on the justiyu or
jugón.
It was placed on the girl’s
shoulder, crossed at the
front on the chest and tied
at the back of the waist.
It was usually worn in winter
to be protected from

11.  Headscar f
It was always used by women. They could only
show their hair in privacy.
Girls who were not engaged were allowed to go
without it.

12.  Calzón
They were knee length trousers worn on top of
pants and shirt.

13.  Waistcoat
The waistcoat was the garment that covered
his chest from shoulder to waist; it was
dressed on the shirt, buttoned at the front
and fit at the back by means of laces.

14.  Coat
A tight and short coat was worn on the
waistcoat.

15. Cummerbund
It’s a wide belt that was
wrapped around the waist to
keep the belly warm.

16.  Montera
It was a peculiar hat or cap used in winter as a
protection against cold.

17.  Tights
They were used by men and women.

18.  Escarpines
A type of shoe with thin sole used at home and
also outside when introduced in the madreña or
Asturian clog.

19.  Madreñas
Madreñas were wooden clogs used in fields
and villages.
They were nicely carved in different
patterns. These patterns identified the
craftman and the area of Asturias where
they had been made.
