The main types are linkage steering using a worm gear and rack-and-pinion steering. Linkage steering uses a steering shaft, column, gearbox and linkage to connect the steering wheel to the wheels. Rack-and-pinion steering uses a pinion gear that engages a toothed rack to directly turn the wheels. Power steering systems use hydraulic pressure to assist the driver. Common problems include steering wheel play, hard steering, and noises from low fluid, worn belts or the power steering pump.
- The Engine subsystem focused on rebuilding engines for the 2015 vehicle to ensure reliability. They rebuilt one engine as a test case.
- Tuning on a dynamometer resulted in a 23% increase in horsepower from 45 to 59 horsepower.
- Lessons from the first rebuild included being more organized to avoid losing parts and contamination, as well as planning part orders more carefully to save time and money.
