This document discusses why US expatriates fail in foreign assignments. It notes that living outside one's native culture can be challenging and overwhelming due to culture shock. Research found the top fears of US expatriates included political instability in the host country, hostility towards foreigners, poverty, war, and violence. On average, expatriates experienced culture shock symptoms for 7 weeks. Being prepared for culture shock and understanding why expatriates fail can help people adjust better to living and working abroad.
