rom Magnavox Odyssey to PS5 and Xbox

founder and CEO is at the helm of this journey.
Growing up on the morning cartoons of the 80s such
as Transformers, M.a.s.k. and Masters of the
universe, Dieter felt right at home with anything
related to great and fantastic stories and the lore
behind them.
This did not change as he grew older, moving over to
the digital space. He lived in the USA for a while; was
the best German Sonic The Hedgehog player at the
first German SEGA championships; sunk weeks of
playtime into Britannia in Ultima IV, and even during

his law school, spent most of his free time modding for
Quake 3 and RtCW.
Despite his business background, there was always a clear
path for Dieter into the entertainment industry. After his
law exams he went gathering knowledge at lager
corporations such as Ubisoft, Koch Media, and the
Bertelsmann group, and eventually laying the foundations
of Headup.
Dieter’s private life is completely dedicated to his family
and three children, his friends and his biggest passion of
music and drums.
Levelling Up
Challenges are an inevitable ingredient that make up the
catalyst for success. There is no business that has not faced
and surpassed the challenges that came across its way. It is
the same scenario for Headup.
“While we are well known in the industry by now—partially
due to the fact that we always kept business and
partnerships clean and transparent—I feel we still have a
lot of ground to cover to make Headup be a known brand
with consumers,” says Dieter.
One of Headup’s prominent challenges has been that of
moving customers from one project to another since the
company’s portfolio covers a wide range of genres and
diverse titles. However, the team’s goal and challenge have
always been clear: To establish Headup as one of the most
known premium boutique publishers for appealing
premium game content in the independent space.
Talking about the current landscape of the gaming space,
Dieter says, “The role of the publisher has been reinventing
itself over the last decade repeatedly. Once a gatekeeper
with the key to the retail shelves, we lived through the
times of closed digital storefronts until the floodgates
opened. Following this we were the first in line to generate
visibility for new IPs. To me it feels as again we are in a new
phase of definition: With more and more subscription
services for games coming to the market, we are seeing an
agency approach to become more effective, bundling
portfolio and finding out which channels are
looking for what specific content we might be able
to bring to them.”
Commenting about the challenges brought about
by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dieter says, “On the
pandemic, we are in a fortunate position that
aside from a bit of logistic juggling, we really do
not feel hard negative effects in our markets.”
Headup strives unwaveringly towards its ambition
of metamorphosing into a legendary name in the
independent gaming space. To achieve this, the
company is constantly optimizing its internal
systems, adding new tools on all levels, be it for
social media monitoring, financial backend, HR
software and so forth.
On the game technology side, team Headup are
not first movers as this is a risk they happily see on
other shoulders. “Great content to me is primarily
about selling emotions and does not necessarily
require the most innovative tech for us.
Nevertheless, we tried many things in the past,
that’s why you can find games from Headup on
nearly all existing gaming devices since our
foundation,” says Dieter.

Sharing his personal lessons with emerging
entrepreneurs wishing to enter the gaming
industry, Dieter says, “More than anything: Don’t
believe the hype. The data young entrepreneurs
are receiving is often enough misleading or
outdated. Trust your instincts and stay true to
your vision. But more than anything: Network,
Network, Network. Don’t be shy to reach out to
people even if they are miles above your own
paygrade.”

Talking about Headup’s blueprint for the
unforeseen future, Dieter says, “The COVID
situation for our industry is not so much of a
challenge as people at home tend to play rather
more than less. Our strategies are shifting more
towards creating games with a high retention
even in the premium segment and we are taking
the learnings of many free to play games into
considerations in doing so.”
Dieter carved out an essence of Headup’s future
vision through a conclusive statement saying, “In
the end we are less competing for the money of
the consumer and more of their time, so player
engagement is key for our future growth plans.”

together pulled the company out of the crisis. Talking about
his bond with his team Oskar says, “I love spending time
with all our employees, so I think the pandemic is tough for
us in that sense. Of course, the most important thing is the
health of employees and everyone is doing all right from
that perspective.”
As for developing the exciting VR games during the
pandemic, Oskar shared how the company continued its
operations, “We have all the tools and programs needed to
keep momentum even while working from home and with
the many ways to communicate with each other digitally, we
are still in a good place.”
The company has also spent a budget to make sure all the
home offices are optimized when it comes to workstation
comfort and equipment. However, Oskar shares how
working remotely has impacted the brainstorming of ideas
or discussions. “This does not come as naturally these days,
as compared to chatting by the coffee machine,” he says.

Oskar shared an experience of how Fast Travel Games has
managed to stay updated with the latest gaming technology.
“Fast travel Games had recently released the game that
was perfect fit for Facebook’s newly launched Hand
Tracking technology to their popular headset Oculus Quest.
This game from Fast Travel Games became one of the first
games on the market that supported Oculus Quest
technology,” he said.
Advice for the aspirants
Entering the VR gaming field might sound thrilling, but one
has to keep learning to stay updated with the latest trends
and technology. “Don’t give up and use your learnings from
trying to build something unique that you strongly believe
in,” Oskar encourages aspiring entrepreneurs.
“Creating games for VR is not the same as creating flat
screen games, so make sure you build a foundation of
insights and knowledge about the technology and the user
expectations. We are still only in the beginning stages of
what VR can mean for gaming, so there is bound to be room
for many more studios and visionaries,” he shares further.
Arming for the future
Being the visionary leader, Oskar knows the need for a
skilled team and knowledge of the latest technology to stay
ahead in the VR gaming world. And his plans for the
company in the year 2021 hint towards the same. “We are
currently hiring for different roles and hope to become
around 40 people at the end of 2021. We have also acquired
a new office which we are moving into in April if the covid
situation allows. Up until now, we have released an average
of 1 VR game per year, but we are building for a future
where we can have two launches every year instead,” he
says.

I joined Gamestream a year ago as
CMO. Before this I was focused on
taking startups to the next level,
becoming leaders in their market, for
example, Amen was acquired by Dada
Group, and Fotolia was acquired by
Adobe. I specialize in accelerating
technology startups with a clear
visionbefore acquisition or significant
investment.
At Gamestream, my main challenge is
to generate revenue by increasing sales
through successful marketing tactics
for the entire organization using market
research, pricing, product marketing,
marketing communications,
advertising, and public relations.
However, all this is geared to focus on
“games for good”, working deeper
with the health department, and
enriching our catalogue with “serious
games” which can be therapeutic or
educational.
What is your opinion on the
necessity for gaming companies to
align their offerings with the latest
technological developments,
especially when it comes to catering
to the ever-evolving consumer needs
and preferences?
The video game market is in a
transition phase. We are seeing
technological innovation driven by
visionary startups, and we're now
entering a phase of structured offerings
from key players, with GAFA who are
now positioning themselves in cloud
gaming.
However, the major challenge lies in
content. Many publishers have not yet
made the shift to cloud gaming by
adapting their games to streaming
models, which has been the case for
music and films. But the future of
video games is the ability to play video
games anywhere, at any time, on any
device, as is the case for music or
movies. Business models that offer
unlimited access to games via a
monthly subscription will be the
winning models, even if it means
offering premium on-demand content.
As an established business leader in
the gaming space, what would be
your advice to the budding
entrepreneurs aspiring to venture
into the gaming industry?
New cloud gaming entrepreneurs
should focus on what value they can
add to the cloud gaming ecosystem,
whether they want to be part of the
technology solution side, the licensing
part, or the content side. The cloud
gaming universe offers incredible
opportunities inthe business world.
Companies need to think hard about
their market position and identify the
right segment of the cloud gaming
market within which they can provide
the best value.
While stepping into the gaming
industry, budding entrepreneurs should
also:

How do you plan on scaling
Gamestream's operations in 2021?
We aim to focus on developing our
hospitality segment in 2021, as this
market is expected to come back to life
following long dormancy due to
COVID-19. Our partnership with the
Accor Hotels Group is the first step,
but this market is not limited to
tourism. It also includes the entire
health sector, specifically via
therapeutic games.
This year, we also plan to scale up into
the entertainment industry i.e., media
brands that want to assert a position of

foothold with publishers as

Some video game publishers such as

the impact of the current pandemic on the AR/VR
products industry? And what developments can be
expected in the near future?
The pandemic has negatively affected almost all sectors of
the economy. However, the IT industry in general, and the
AR/VR/MR technology in particular, felt more of the multi-
directional impact of the global lockdown. On the one hand,
our customers’ revenues decreased, and in this regard, some
companies, having chosen a wait-out strategy, cut their
marketing budget.
On the other hand, manufacturers and marketers saw a vital
need for an innovative approach in marketing, sales, and
online promotion. Earlier many people saw the use of AR
technology to promote various groups of products (clothes,
shoes, accessories, home décor, furnishing, real estate, cars,
etc.) just as a trend, and not as an essential business tool.
However, in the new reality of closed stores and remote
work, now the use of innovative sales methods has become a
must not only for successful promotion but also for
maintaining the market position. Naturally, this trend has
further spurred the technological progress of our industry.
Moreover, some manufacturers had to make changes to their
products to make the AR implementation possible.
For example, recently we have finished a come-to-life puzzle

project for an international company. Well, to make the AR
app work smoothly the client had to slightly change the
puzzle pieces so that the camera had something to catch. This
is a small local case; however, it illustrates a general trend
that tends to grow in the future – manufacturers will have to

What is your opinion on the necessity for AR/VR
companies to align their offerings with the latest
technological developments, especially when it comes to
catering to the ever-evolving consumer needs and
preferences?
In general, we always strive to use all available technologies.
Moreover, in our portfolio, several solutions were the first-
in-the-world to be implemented, at a time when everyone
told us that this was simply impossible.
However, in specific cases, it all depends on our client’s
target audience and the future product’s market. The thing is
that new software capabilities usually require state-of-the-art
mobile devices.
And if we are talking about products aimed at the US market,
where, under certain conditions, it is possible to buy the
latest smartphone at a more than a reasonable price, then we
are definitely in for any technology.
If we are talking about a product aimed at less economically
developed countries, then, of course, we can always
implement the most innovative solutions, but will the devices
of end consumers handle them? It is the client who has to
answer this question.
As an established business leader, what would be your
advice to the budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture
into the AR/VR industry?
Choosing the right market segment for AR/VR development
is the best beginning for your future success. It is so
important because today practically every sphere of our life -
medicine, education, marketing, etc – is in high demand for
AR and VR. So, choose a niche that inspires you.
It is crucial to make sure that economic feasibility is not the
only vector that defines your business growth strategy.
Because in the long run, a team of like-minded people
inspired by the same idea will always win from people who
work only for the sake of money.
Our experience and our competitors’ experience have made it
clear that by no means it benefits your business if you are
ready to do any work in this market. Many budding
entrepreneurs are willing to work on any project and, as a
result, they lose.
We have been through all that. Initially, we have defined our
segment quite clearly - AR/VR product development for
children and families. Nevertheless, it turned out to be too
vague. Well, we had to come up with a more detailed concept
of our place in the market and look for our niche.

Where do you see your company in the next five years?
Creativity, expertise, and work complexity are our main
competitive advantages. We carry out the full production
cycle from developing an idea to marketing support for the
finished product.
Sustainability is another principle that helps us to become a
leader in this market. Do not be surprised, AR can be eco-
friendly too. The constant accumulation of new knowledge
and its most rational use are the main factors of any
successful ecosystem. Therefore, we, as a business structure,
built a continuous learning environment to generate new
knowledge in our field and help our end users do the same.
Most of our products contain educational and learning

If we are talking about a product aimed at less economically developed countries, then, of course, we can always implement the most innovative solutions, but will the devices of end consumers handle them?
