4.10.1 Cloud OS
With Cloud OS, its most recent cloud product branding, HP is aiming to create a consistent
infrastructure environment using OpenStack. Cloud OS acts as the company’s internal OpenStack
distribution, which allows it to progressively add functionalities to an IaaS delivery, which can later
be used for HP’s private or managed cloud.

Top 20 Cloud Computing Companies 2014:
Leaders in IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Public, Private,
& Hybrid Cloud Solutions
such as AWS have been able to grow their businesses from the ground up and become market
leaders relatively quickly.

In this type of market environment, it is understandable for players such as Oracle and Microsoft to
put collaboration before market share, as these companies will stand a greater chance of fending
off new entrants and challengers this way. This also forces environments such as Oracles
previously “walled garden” to enter into the age of interoperability and open APIs.

4.14.6 SWOT Analysis of Oracle’s Cloud Portfolio and Strategy
Table 4.47: SWOT Analysis of Oracle’s Cloud Portfolio
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Strengths
Giant brand name with international
recognition
Broad product suite
Appeal to both enterprise segment and service
providers
Offers IaaS and SaaS solutions
Effective partner network
Enterprise partnership with Microsoft creates
license interoperability
Some sales and pricing flexibility
Opportunities
Oracle has the operating capital to grow its
cloud portfolio and expertise through
acquisitions
Indian cloud market growing rapidly
International operations provides proximity to
clients and makes strategy and products easier
to implement across regions
Few vendors can challenge Oracle’s dominance
in enterprise-wide applications

•
•
•
•
•

•
•
•

Weaknesses
High TCO and subscription pricing will drive
away SMBs and larger, more fiscally
conservative enterprise
Do not have a multi-tenant cloud architecture
Greater difficulty of imparting system and
software upgrades
CRM UI is unengaging
Small partner network, third party plug-in
solutions, and lacklustre marketplace
Threats
SAP is moving aggressively in the same space
and is the largest, most direct threat to Oracle
Cloud computing, broadly, has dissipated
Oracle’s monopoly standing in enterprise
software, systems, and services
Slow adoption of Oracle’s cloud-based ERP
solution

4.15 Rackspace
While it does not have a significant public facing division, Rackspace remains a trusted cloud
vendor. Rather than providing shared data centre resources, the company opts for private ones,
splitting its product suite between dedicated services and public cloud.

Rackspace is a global web host known for high end managed hosting and dedicated services. It is
the among the biggest players in the cloud computing landscape. The company delivers
enterprise-level managed services for all types for businesses.

to benchmark tests. Rackspace is responding to greater customer consumption of memory, which
the company attributes to more mature applications being run in the cloud. They have responded
with a maturation of public cloud architecture, which visiongain believes will continue to be a boon
for them as the cloud market evolves.

See Chart 4.20 and 4.21 for a distribution of Rackspace quarterly revenue 3Q12-3Q13.

  • 17. Top 20 Cloud Computing Companies 2014: Leaders in IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Public, Private, & Hybrid Cloud Solutions such as AWS have been able to grow their businesses from the ground up and become market leaders relatively quickly. In this type of market environment, it is understandable for players such as Oracle and Microsoft to put collaboration before market share, as these companies will stand a greater chance of fending off new entrants and challengers this way. This also forces environments such as Oracles previously “walled garden” to enter into the age of interoperability and open APIs. 4.14.6 SWOT Analysis of Oracle’s Cloud Portfolio and Strategy Table 4.47: SWOT Analysis of Oracle’s Cloud Portfolio • • • • • • • • • • • Strengths Giant brand name with international recognition Broad product suite Appeal to both enterprise segment and service providers Offers IaaS and SaaS solutions Effective partner network Enterprise partnership with Microsoft creates license interoperability Some sales and pricing flexibility Opportunities Oracle has the operating capital to grow its cloud portfolio and expertise through acquisitions Indian cloud market growing rapidly International operations provides proximity to clients and makes strategy and products easier to implement across regions Few vendors can challenge Oracle’s dominance in enterprise-wide applications • • • • • • • • Weaknesses High TCO and subscription pricing will drive away SMBs and larger, more fiscally conservative enterprise Do not have a multi-tenant cloud architecture Greater difficulty of imparting system and software upgrades CRM UI is unengaging Small partner network, third party plug-in solutions, and lacklustre marketplace Threats SAP is moving aggressively in the same space and is the largest, most direct threat to Oracle Cloud computing, broadly, has dissipated Oracle’s monopoly standing in enterprise software, systems, and services Slow adoption of Oracle’s cloud-based ERP solution Source: visiongain, 2014 4.15 Rackspace While it does not have a significant public facing division, Rackspace remains a trusted cloud vendor. Rackspace is responding to greater customer consumption of memory, which the company attributes to more mature applications being run in the cloud. They have responded with a maturation of public cloud architecture, which visiongain believes will continue to be a boon for them as the cloud market evolves.
