I love this sentence. It expresses a kind of synesthesia (the production of a sense impression
relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body). It
is a mixing of the senses, in which a sound can also be experienced as a shape. It is so
outstanding.
Add to this effect the alliteration of “loud” and “long,”. And then, the concentric movement of
sound in “circles and circles of sorrow,” and we have something truly memorable.
I believe, if anyone has felt ‘pain’, if they care of read the sentence again, if they care of sip it,
nibble it, chew it, hold it, let the aroma and the sharpness linger for a few moments, they will feel
the heat of pain that was buried deep in memories, as if it is happening right now. They will
understand the sentence by Toni Morrison.
They will love her. I do.
It has feelings, it has imagery, it has depths, it has experience, it helps one to relive experiences
of years in moments that become alive right now.
