science labs and cooking equipment as a means
of applying a hard-wearing and hygienic finish.
Particles of glass are sprayed on to cast iron, and
then fired at high temperatures. The result is an

These heavyweight lights pay homage to an
industrial process. A direct contrast to the artisan
association of hand-blown glass, the process
involves compressing molten glass into a hollow-
core mould which is then annealed in a kiln.
Rarely used in contemporary design, the process
results in an incredibly hard-wearing object.

Used for millennia to build ships, houses and furni-
ture, oak is solid and hard-wearing. It requires no
adornment as its natural grain is both decorative
and tactile. Wood lends itself to robust forms which
are intentionally chunky and where the methods
of construction are clearly visible.

ways of using colour, fluorescence has traditionally
been employed as an exclamation mark. Used in
emergency equipment or high visibility clothing, this
vibrant colour accent is intended to shock.

16. RAS S An alloy of copper and zinc,
this malleable material can be worked by hand
or machined to create bold forms and tactile
surfaces. Its warm, golden colour makes it much
appreciated in art or decorative design. Brass
is reasonably resistant to corrosion and can be
treated with a variety of different decorative
finishes, such as patination.

Vacuum metallisation is a highly delicate process
that involves vaporising a small amount of pure
metal at a very high temperature, then ‘sucking’ it
on to a surface by applying an electrical charge.
Necessarily carried out in a spotlessly clean
environment, it creates a layer of metal that is
only one or two atoms thick. The result is a highly
reflective ‘mirrored’ surface, which takes on the
characteristics of its surroundings.

20. OPPER Rarely explored as an
aesthetic for furniture and lighting, copper,
which naturally occurs as an uncompounded
mineral, was one of the earliest metals worked
by man. When used in common objects today,
it is often hidden from sight, such as in pipes,
computer components or utensils. Its rich and
reflective qualities add warmth and elegance
to the designer’s palate.

23. TEEL Durable and corrosion resistant,
stainless steel is commonly used to make surgical
equipment, jewellery and component parts for the
aviation industry. Manufactured in sheets that are
punched into shape, it embodies the principles of
mass production, where parts are machined and
then assembled to make a form. A vital part of our
own rich industrial heritage, notably in Sheffield,
this material is becoming increasingly prized for its
rich aesthetic qualities as well as its durability.

24. LUM INIUM
One of the most plentiful and versatile metals on
the planet, aluminium can be treated in a variety
of ways, from extrusion to spinning. Exceptionally
easy to work, it can be stretched, welded or even
glued. It also offers many ways of applying surface
colour, such as anodising and powder coating.
Best known for its lightweight properties, aluminium
has played an important role in human discovery
through its use by the aerospace industry.
