This document describes experiences using the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique to monitor empowerment programs in Palestine, the Philippines, Latin America, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Palestine, MSC stories were collected from youth volunteers in a youth network program about how their participation led to changes in their daily lives, views on health, ability to involve peers, and overall. The stories aimed to learn about program impacts rather than do a formal assessment.

This document discusses how non-profits and advocacy groups can use the internet and web presence to further their goals. It outlines useful features of modern websites like blogs, social media, and content syndication. It argues that organizations need a web presence to reach internet users. It provides tips on defining a web strategy, building an organizational website in phases, and maintaining an online presence through promotion and content updates. Challenges include maintaining engagement and prioritizing the website within the organization.
This document discusses how information and communication technologies (ICT), specifically free and open source software (FOSS), can help people's organizations in their work and struggles for social change. It provides examples of FOSS tools like Ubuntu, Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice that can improve efficiency, data collection/analysis, and advocacy. While FOSS provides advantages over proprietary software in terms of cost, customization and community support, there are also challenges to adoption like technical skills requirements and lack of alternatives for some proprietary applications. Case studies show how human rights groups have successfully used FOSS for documentation, data analysis and advocacy work.
Intellectual Property Rights and Access to Medicines discusses the implications of intellectual property rights (IPRs) for access to medicines globally. It notes that while pharmaceutical research and development is expensive, most R&D spending goes to diseases of wealthy nations. The TRIPs agreement strengthened pharmaceutical patents worldwide but recognized some flexibilities for public health. However, countries face pressure when using flexibilities like compulsory licensing. Recent trade agreements push for "TRIPs plus" rules extending monopolies and limiting access. The EU seeks similarly strong IPR rules in trade negotiations that could restrict generic competition and affordable medicines.
The document discusses how trade liberalization may impact public health in developing countries. It notes that while increased trade is often argued to promote growth and reduce poverty, thereby improving health, the evidence shows mixed results. Liberalization has increased economic insecurity and the trade of goods like tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy foods that harm health. Intellectual property rules in trade agreements also drive up drug costs and limit access to medicines in developing nations. The author argues trade agreements like Economic Partnership Agreements between the EU and African/Caribbean nations could negatively impact public health systems and access to affordable drugs.
The EU's Bilateral FTA Negotations are a Threat to the Right to Healthintal
This document summarizes the key points of a paper analyzing how bilateral free trade agreements between the EU and developing countries threaten the right to health. It begins with background on the shift towards bilateral FTAs after stalled WTO negotiations. It then discusses how FTAs could negatively impact health through effects on social determinants of health, loss of government revenue, liberalization of health services, and "TRIPS-plus" intellectual property rules restricting access to medicines. The document argues that trade agreements should be assessed for health impacts and ensure policies do no harm to health.
