LIQUID AIR AS A NOVEL ENERGY VECTOR
I co-founded both Highview Power Storage (2004) and Dearman (2011) and through them
established the concept of liquid air to deliver both grid-scale electricity-to-electricity energy storage,
and distributed cold and power for applications in transport and the built environment. I am one of the
named inventors of Liquid Air Energy Storage.
I moved to Dearman full-time in 2013. Today, it is a well-funded,
multi award-winning business employing more than 70 engineers,
analysts and business development professionals in its own test
and development centre. The company’s technology has
progressed rapidly: five years ago it was garden-shed invention
that had been mothballed; today the first application is in
demonstration with Sainsbury’s and nearing commercial
deployment.
Between Highview and Dearman, we have secured more than
$100 million of private equity, industry and UK grant funding for
liquid air technology research, demonstration and
industrialisation. At University of Birmingham, we have secured
significant government funding to establish the Birmingham
Centre for Cryogenic Energy Storage, the Thermal-Energy
Research Accelerator and the International Thermal Energy
Manufacturing Accelerator.
As Visiting Professor in Power and the Cold Economy within the
Birmingham Energy Institute, University of Birmingham, I was
the academic lead of the 2015 ‘Doing Cold Smarter’ Policy
Commission, establishing cooling as part of
international energy debates and the need for
system level thinking (the Cold Economy).
My current focus is on vital but so far little-recognised role that cooling must play
in achieving the UN's global sustainable development goals.

Before founding and running Highview and Dearman, I trained and worked as a
journalist, and then moved into strategic business development and corporate
social responsibility. Over the years, I have been contracted by a range of clients in business,
government and NGOs to deliver commercial and social step-change progr	ammes and radical
innovations; often overcoming systemic barriers and inertia, and converging and meeting the needs of
multiple stakeholders.
Projects included: Seeing is Believing (HRH Prince of Wales); the BITC Principles of CSR and
Business Awards; the launch of Divine fair trade chocolate, and Community Owned Retailing (Dept of
Health and the then DETR). In 2000 I won the Caroline Walker Trust Award for Improving Public
Health while at Dearman and Highview we have won more than a dozen awards. I was named
Innovator of the Year in 2015 by Business Green and this year Dearman won the Innovate UK
Inspirational Innovation Award.
In the nineties I co-founded a charity in Peru providing nursery education and day-care for more than
250 street children each day. As a conflict photojournalist, I covered stories in the UK and from
Rwanda, Bosnia, Angola, Romania and South America.
