Regulatory Reform Order -
Did you know?
During our time in helping customers with fire advisory support services, we have found some
common misconceptions regarding some of the terms contained in the Legislation – here are a
couple of examples.

Relevant Persons
This is commonly misunderstood as meaning employees only – it’s not - it means all persons that might enter the
premises, for whatever reason, including Fire Brigade personnel. Following an enquiry from a client with a large office
block, arrangements were found to have overlooked how to warn contractors of fire, in particular, when they were
outside suspended in an external cradle, cleaning windows. The RR(FS)O requires that fire safety arrangements extend
to all people that are likely to enter your premises.

Co-operation & Co-ordination
This is also a commonly overlooked item. Put simply, the Legislation requires that you find out and consider, who and
what is happening on and around your premises, both internally and externally, and how this might affect all parties in
a fire. This can only be done by investigative work, and reviewing how a fire might start, the arrangements in place, and
what you need to cover sufficiently in your own arrangements, as a result of the information. An example of this was a
client occupying one floor in a multi tenanted premises. They thought that having a fire plan for their own section of the
premises was sufficient. However, by communicating with other occupants, it was discovered that a mini laboratory
operation existed 3 floors down, that no one, (including the landlord), was aware of. The fire risks had a significant
bearing with escape arrangements. This was quickly rectified. The legislation and HM guides clearly defines the
requirement of Co-operation and Co-ordination and a number of checks must be undertaken to ensure that sufficient
knowledge is shared amongst all parties when it comes to managing fire safety.

HM Government guides are excellent and are obtainable as free of charge downloads on the web. Alternatively, if you
email the type of premises that you operate to noshortcuts@titanfiresec.com we will obtain it for you and email it back,
free of charge.

   New Govt “FIRE KILLS” Website
HM Govt have produced an excellent site at
   http://firekills.direct.gov.uk

There is a multitude of fire safety articles and videos
here that we would strongly recommend a look at.
Pass on the weblink to others.

It may well save a life!
Stand by your pan
In a recent newsletter, the pub operator Wetherspoons, highlights the dangers of fire linked to
responsible consumption of alcohol. Titan commends Kent Fire & Rescue service by going one stage
further, with an excellent video production, parodying Dolly Parton’s “Stand by your man”.
It’s a very serious subject which is clearly explained in the video and once again worth passing the
                     weblink on – which is:
                     http://www.kent.fire-uk.org/your_safety/safety_campaigns/stand_by_your_pan.aspx

 New photo ID business
 cards for Titan
They say that a picture tells a thousand words and it was on these
lines that new business cards for all of Titans customer facing
staff, including our engineering team, are now in use.
“You have your photo on your website, so why not on
your business cards”, says Sean Condon, Titans
General Manager. “We think it’s important
that our customers can see & recall the
person that is looking after their interests,
and if challenged whilst on site, can
readily prove their Identity. This is a
very important factor whilst on premises
such as schools, care homes or hospitals where
vulnerable occupants exist. Despite some initial natural
resistance to start, all of our staff can now see that its yet another simple
but effective differentiator that endorses our professional approach”.

Gent Fire Alarm Systems – Did you know?
Titan is an appointed Elite Systems Integrator for Gent by Honeywell fire systems. "What does that mean for me?", you
may well ask. In reply, Cliff Smith, senior project manager at Titan replies “it means you have a choice as to whom you
appoint to service your system and that you are definitely not stuck with the original installer, whoever it is.
It is best however that you take up references prior to appointment and make sure that despite being an approved integrator
that the Company has competent engineers in sufficient number, so that you get the service you need, and not depend on just
one trained engineer. Titan has taken over the servicing of many Gent by Honeywell fire system installations, including fixed
extinguishing systems. This is good news for clients that feel its time for a change, because now they can, simply by emailing

  • 1. Issue 1 NEWS Fire Safety Advisory Team Further Strengthened Since retirement from his Fire & Rescue service career, Phil has kept himself actively engaged as a Fire Safety Advisor. Pictured left, Managing Director, Tony Hanley, said "Phil’s appointment means that our clients have access to the highest level experience for fire safety advisory support, including negotiation with local authorities.” Managing Director Tony Hanley, said “Phil’s appointment means that our clients will be able to access the highest level experience for general fire safety education, advice and even negotiation with local authorities. Phil whole heartedly subscribes to our philosophy that Fire Legislation The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is not a consultants charter, and should be applied to suit is now taking effect as prosecutions increase at a the individual needs of each application, ever bearing in significant rate, the latest (April 2010) being mind, that it should always be kept as simple as possible each and every time”. The Legislation requires that ownership for fire safety Phil Lloyd commented “Titan has had fire safety management starts from within and not a dependence on systems engineering at the core of its business for 25 the defunct traditional prescriptive support from Fire & years now. They have a professional ethic that runs Rescue services. That’s history. Many are finding out too late through the business which was an important factor to that compliance is not just a DIY box ticking exercise. me. • 2. Regulatory Reform Order - Did you know? During our time in helping customers with fire advisory support services, we have found some common misconceptions regarding some of the terms contained in the Legislation – here are a couple of examples. Relevant Persons This is commonly misunderstood as meaning employees only – it’s not - it means all persons that might enter the premises, for whatever reason, including Fire Brigade personnel. Following an enquiry from a client with a large office block, arrangements were found to have overlooked how to warn contractors of fire, in particular, when they were outside suspended in an external cradle, cleaning windows. The RR(FS)O requires that fire safety arrangements extend to all people that are likely to enter your premises. Co-operation & Co-ordination This is also a commonly overlooked item. Put simply, the Legislation requires that you find out and consider, who and what is happening on and around your premises, both internally and externally, and how this might affect all parties in a fire. This can only be done by investigative work, and reviewing how a fire might start, the arrangements in place, and what you need to cover sufficiently in your own arrangements, as a result of the information. An example of this was a client occupying one floor in a multi tenanted premises. They thought that having a fire plan for their own section of the premises was sufficient. However, by communicating with other occupants, it was discovered that a mini laboratory operation existed 3 floors down, that no one, (including the landlord), was aware of. The fire risks had a significant bearing with escape arrangements. This was quickly rectified. The legislation and HM guides clearly defines the requirement of Co-operation and Co-ordination and a number of checks must be undertaken to ensure that sufficient knowledge is shared amongst all parties when it comes to managing fire safety. HM Government guides are excellent and are obtainable as free of charge downloads on the web. Alternatively, if you email the type of premises that you operate to noshortcuts@titanfiresec.com we will obtain it for you and email it back, free of charge. New Govt “FIRE KILLS” Website HM Govt have produced an excellent site at http://firekills.direct.gov.uk There is a multitude of fire safety articles and videos here that we would strongly recommend a look at. Pass on the weblink to others. It may well save a life!
  • 3. Stand by your pan In a recent newsletter, the pub operator Wetherspoons, highlights the dangers of fire linked to responsible consumption of alcohol. Titan commends Kent Fire & Rescue service by going one stage further, with an excellent video production, parodying Dolly Parton’s “Stand by your man”. It’s a very serious subject which is clearly explained in the video and once again worth passing the weblink on – which is: http://www.kent.fire-uk.org/your_safety/safety_campaigns/stand_by_your_pan.aspx as it may well save a life. New photo ID business cards for Titan They say that a picture tells a thousand words and it was on these lines that new business cards for all of Titans customer facing staff, including our engineering team, are now in use. “You have your photo on your website, so why not on your business cards”, says Sean Condon, Titans General Manager. “We think it’s important that our customers can see & recall the person that is looking after their interests, and if challenged whilst on site, can readily prove their Identity. This is a very important factor whilst on premises such as schools, care homes or hospitals where vulnerable occupants exist. Despite some initial natural resistance to start, all of our staff can now see that its yet another simple but effective differentiator that endorses our professional approach”. Gent Fire Alarm Systems – Did you know? Titan is an appointed Elite Systems Integrator for Gent by Honeywell fire systems. "What does that mean for me?", you may well ask. In reply, Cliff Smith, senior project manager at Titan replies “it means you have a choice as to whom you appoint to service your system and that you are definitely not stuck with the original installer, whoever it is. It is best however that you take up references prior to appointment and make sure that despite being an approved integrator that the Company has competent engineers in sufficient number, so that you get the service you need, and not depend on just one trained engineer. Titan has taken over the servicing of many Gent by Honeywell fire system installations, including fixed extinguishing systems. This is good news for clients that feel its time for a change, because now they can, simply by emailing contact details to noshortcuts@titanfiresec.com”
