He emphasized that most single-authored papers are not published in high-impact journals and receive few citations in the first year. In contrast, papers with multiple authors where researchers collaborate throughout the project are more likely to be published in high-impact journals. Some key tips he provided include contacting potential collaborators early in the proposal stage, discussing research problems to find areas of shared interest, and building on each other's previous work. Proper collaboration requires jointly deciding on authorship guidelines, transparency, and cultivating diversity, equity and inclusion. Successful collaboration can lead to higher quality research outcomes and publications.
