Tinder Case Study
What is it and how is it dangerous?
What is Tinder?
• Tinder is a location-based dating application
(using facebook) that allows communication
between mutually interested users. The
application was launched in 2012 and is now
estimated to have one billion ‘swipes’ a day.
Tinder was among the first ‘swiping apps’
where the user uses a swiping motion to
choose between photos of other users.
How Many People Use Tinder?
• New research shows that there are 50 million
active users on Tinder, who check their
accounts 11 times per day and spend an
average of 90 minutes per day on the app.
Why is Tinder dangerous?
• Like any other dating application or website
Tinder has been used for increasingly violent
attacks on the user base. News from Fremont
police that a 20-year-old man used the popular
dating app to lure his unsuspecting victims,
before sexually assaulting them. Kwangmin Jin
had been a student at the University of Illinois,
where he was arrested. He is now awaiting
extradition back to the Bay Area. It was annouced
that Jin would give out an alcoholic drink that was
tainted with some kind of sedative drug.
• In July 2014, in the early hours of the morning, a 34-
year-old man used the popular dating application to
"match" with a woman named "Brittany" who claimed
to be 20. The two began chatting and by about 9.30am
were getting into the heavy details. According to the
facts, the victim arrived at the agreed meeting place at
5pm, and a short time later two other men arrived,
parking their car nearby. ’Brittany’ the court evidence
shows, called the man and asked him to get out of the
car and give her a hug. He did, but soon after the two
men got out of the car and approached the victim.
Who proceeded to rob him and vandalize his vehicle.
Conclusion
• The nature of online dating is the fact that you
can never tell who you are talking to/matching
with. It is evident through just the 2 case
studies presented here that it is possible to
match with criminals and psychopaths and can
be incredibly dangerous for those using the
applications.
