The document discusses the history and growth of online dating from Match.com's launch in 1995 to the billions generated annually by the industry today. It notes that niche dating sites have emerged to serve specific demographics and that mobile dating apps have become popular especially with teens and students. While online dating provides opportunities, it also poses safety risks like potential encounters with criminals. The concept of "catfishing" is explained, along with the MTV show it inspired. Overall, the document suggests that online dating has become a mainstream part of modern romance due to the variety of sites and erosion of the stigma once associated with it.
A presentation on the relationship between social networking sites and friendships based on a chapter from the book, "Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out,"
This is the result of an extensive study on the users of dating apps like Tinder, OKCupid, Zoosk and others. We were studying how people use the apps, how they present themselves, and whether or not they feel successful. We conducted this study over the course of a month to gain design insights and directions.

Social media? It’s serious! Understanding the dark side of social mediaIan McCarthy
Research and practice have mostly focused on the “bright side” of social media, aiming to understand and help in leveraging the manifold opportunities afforded by this technology. However, it is increasingly observable that social media present enormous risks for individuals, communities, firms, and even the whole of society. Examples for this “dark side” of social media include cyberbullying, addictive use, trolling, online witch hunts, fake news, and privacy abuse. In this article, we aim to illustrate the multidimensionality of the dark side of social media and describe the related various undesirable outcomes. To do this, we adapt the established social media honeycomb framework to explain the dark side implications of each of the seven functional building blocks: conversations, sharing, presence, relationships, reputation, groups, and identity. On the basis of these reflections, we present a number of avenues for future research, so as to facilitate a better understanding and use of social media.

Online Dating Services – Chronology and Key Features
Comparison with Traditional Dating

ABSTRACT
Online dating services have become increasingly and widely used for large mix of populations. Despite numerous stigmas
attached to the people who are seeking such dating services, these kind of online dating services –it seems- are here to stay.
The number of people who are seeking these services is on the rise, and the figure for businesses and web sites that open for
this purpose is increasing as well. But how did we get into this state of web sites and how does it compare with old time
traditional dating. This paper gives perspectives on these kinds of dating services and provides a comparisonto what used to
be practiced before (we call it here traditional dating services). The paper starts by giving an introduction and a brief history
of online dating services. It then delves more into the different categories of these services, their key features, and then it
tabulates these key features with what used to be offered in old style traditional dating.

INTRODUCTION
Dating online has emerged lately to be a popular tool for meeting other people online and to establish a relationship (Orr,
2004). This kind of business has experienced substantial growth in terms of the profits that they are generating, in terms of
the membership and the people who are using it, and also in terms of the number of businesses that are offering these
services.
In terms of profits from online dating services, Mitchell (2009) provides evidence of the extensive growth of this kind
business and states that online dating web sites constitute the third most profitable kinds of business on the web. The list
below shows the most profitable of online business categories:
Top Online Paid Content Sites in 2008 by Category ($ in millions)
Digital music $1,732
Video games $1,866
Dating $957
To show the increasing number of people who are using these kinds of services, Gunter (2008) conducted a survey on some
30,000 online respondents in the UK. More than 3800 responded to the survey questions about the extent of their use of
online dating services. The following numbers were extracted from this survey:
- 29% said they used online dating services at least once
- 30% spent more than 200 British pounds on dating online
- 70% achieved at least one date
- 43% achieving at least one sexual relationship
- 9% found a marriage partner

The number of businesses that are providing such services is on the rise also. Marsan (2008) estimated that there are about

Social Networks
No inventions of the 20th Century surpass the Internet, which is a modern-day vessel for communication, information, and entertainment, all rolled into one! It has greatly improved humanity’s ability to communicate effectively by time to response; it is often the principle source of information on any possible topic from baby care to auto mechanics. If you are seeking entertainment, just click on one of the million websites available. Now the Internet has entered a new realm, social networking with services which are said to enable their users to maintain and dissolve friendships online. Traditionally, an individual’s social networking needs, which date back to the beginning of mankind, were dependent on the individuals’ immediate environment and their interactions within (out) it; how they interacted with people in their community, school, or workplace. Online social networking has changed by expanding the environment for interaction from those named above to large and extensive networks that cover the world.
The following research paper attempts to explore the advent and evolution of social networking sites, their benefits and the dangers of online social networking sites as it relates to human relations. It also aims to determine whether social networking sites enable people to form effective bonds, or is it actually the destroyer of human interactions by reducing man to man contact, as well as the erosion of privacy.
The dictionary definition of the word “effective” is “successful in producing a desired or intended result” also defined as “existing in fact, though not formally acknowledged as such (Oxford dictionaries, 2011).” To effectively achieve a desired goal or result, all the necessary conditions must be availed and adhered to, failure to which, this goal will not be accomplished. For example for one’s studies to be effective, the learner should be focused in all ways, right from attending lessons, timely completion and submission of assignments.
Various issues demand some conditions so as to achieve a given goal. This seems sometimes as part of the main idea, that is the lack of it implies part of the deal is not there hence partial accomplishment. An example of this is a vehicle for one to effectively travel; all the components of the vehicle, such as fuel, tire, and other parts of the vehicle must be in good condition for the journey to be a success. Therefore effectiveness is reached after accomplishing these stipulations.
As for the research topic, it is evident that for people to meet and communicate effectively they must exist social networks, that will help link and bring them together to a site where they can exchange ideas in the process of knowing each other, something which takes place with time. For effective communication in these websites, a lot need to be availed, so as to enable these individuals communicate effectively. Such components include, an open minded person, ready to fully discuss .
2. Online Dating
The first big online dating website was Match.com
• Launched in 1995
• Now the world’s largest online dating site
BY THE NUMBERS:
54 million – the total number of single people in the United States
25 million – the number of people who used dating sites in April 2011
Over $1 billion – annual revenue from the online dating industry
52.4% – male users
47.6% – female users
5. Online Dating
Individuals who face a small dating market are
particularly able to benefit from niche dating services
and websites.
• Gays, lesbians, middle-aged people are groups
most likely to rely on the Internet for finding a
potential suitor
6. Online Dating
At 26, women have more online pursuers than men. But by age 48, men
have twice as many as women.
In their online profiles…
• Women lie most about weight, physical build, and age.
• Men lie most about age, height and income.
7. Smartphone Apps
A different kind of online dating has chosen the mobile route – social media
apps geared toward dating and connecting with members of the opposite
sex (or same sex, in the case of Grindr) have become increasingly
popular, especially with teens and college students.
• Mobile, location-based services that match based on physical
location
8. Safety Concerns
As with any type of online activity, dating on the web comes with safety
concerns.
• Risks include theft of personal information/identity, dangerous
situations as a result of meeting up with someone you met
online
In 2011, a woman filed a lawsuit against Match.com in California state
court after allegedly being raped by a man she met through the
website, who turned out to be a convicted sex offender.
• Match.com now screens
members for being registered
sex offenders
9. Catfishing
A “catfish” is someone who makes a fake online profile and starts
relationships with other people based on the fake entity they have
created for themselves.
Last year, catfishing gained national attention when it was revealed
that Notre Dame football player Manti Te’o was the victim of an
elaborate catfishing scheme.
10. Catfishing
Recently, MTV created a show called “Catfish,” in which they find unsuspecting people
who are in online catfishing relationships and set up a face-to-face meeting with their
online partners.
• Now in its 2nd season, the show has revealed all sorts of reasons why catfish
use their deceptive techniques, including “embarrassment about a weight
problem, discomfort with emerging sexual identity, [and] outright malice.”
11. Online vs. Offline Dating
The advent of Internet dating has lead to a shift in the way people interact.
Difference: Face-to-face communication.
• Traditional ways of getting to know another person are discarded when the
computer becomes a main barrier.
• Rather than learning about that person through body language, behavior, and
appearance, people are forced to instead interpret solely through text.
Although trusting a stranger online is a common and valid concern, more individuals are
turning to online dating websites as invaluable resources for their love lives
• According to some researchers, they “may even experience greater
interpersonal and romantic connections online than in their offline lives”
12. Love at First Click
Finding love has now become integrated with modern technology, and
some say it has never been easier to develop a relationship.
• “Love at first click” has been made possible by the thousands of
online dating websites and services that target both broad and
extremely narrow populations, and the stigma associated with
online dating has essentially been erased.
Online dating has proven to be quite successful. In a modern world that
relies heavily on technology, online dating is certain to be a viable option
for interpersonal romantic connections for years to come.
Editor's Notes
For example, Christian Mingle and J Date cater to members of the Christian and Jewish religions, respectively. A site called Matrimony.com recently launched in India to help set up cultural arranged marriages.
There are even some extremely specific sites, like this one called Farmers Only dating. I saw this commercial on TV here in Columbia a few days ago and thought it was hilarious.
While these apps do have the possibility of connecting individuals who will date or marry in the future, they are most widely regarded as technological tools that allow people to “hook up” with each other without the hassle of a relationship.
However, the motivations of seemingly innocent people can turn out to be dangerous regardless of whether that person has a criminal background or not.
Another danger of online dating is catfishing.A “catfish” is someone who makes a fake online profile and starts relationships with other people based on the fake entity they have created for themselves. Catfish go to great lengths to find fake pictures of themselves. They also work hard to avoid any in-person meetings with their online partner.
