He served as an Illinois State Representative from 1999 to 2015, where he was promoted to Deputy Minority Leader and Assistant Minority Leader. He has lobbied effectively for legislation and regulatory changes. Additionally, Schmitz has worked as a paid-on-call firefighter/EMT for the City of Batavia since 1984, holding various leadership roles within the department. He also has experience in land development management.
