Facts about Arthritis
If you or any one of your family or friends is
suffering from arthritis, it is advisable to gather
as much knowledge as you can about this
disease, and the manner in which it can hamper
your day-to-day functioning. Although, more
than 46 million Americans suffer from arthritis,
this disease is often misunderstood under the
cover of some common myths.
Many people have a firm belief that arthritis is associated with old age and is
characterised by minor pains and aches. However, the truth is that people of all
genders, races and age groups can contract arthritis, which a musculoskeletal disorder.
Different Types of Arthritis
Arthritis can take three different forms; Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and
Juvenile Arthritis. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is one of the most
commonly prevalent forms of arthritis; while, Rheumatoid Arthritis involves the
inflammation of the joint membrane, resulting in pain, warmth, stiffness, swelling or
even joint damage. Juvenile arthritis is usually associated with children (in the age group
of 16 and less) suffering from inflammatory or auto-immune conditions.
It is a sad reflection upon our time that some people consider it to be a minor health
issue. On the contrary, this disease has occupied the centre stage of the economic
system and health care of any country. People suffering from arthritis might become
partially or completely disabled, thus affecting the overall economic activity.
Myths
A common myth that the majority of people have about arthritis is that, since it is a
disease of the bones, the person suffering from it should rest as much as possible, and
must avoid all forms of physical exercise. However, medical research has proved that
exercise is one of the most effective ways through which one can fight arthritis. People
suffering from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can derive some specific benefits
through resistance type and endurance based exercises. As the disease mostly affects
the knee joints, regular exercise and weight management can go a long way in providing
relief from this painful condition, when less pressure is exerted on the knees.
The common belief that arthritis is an incurable disease, a lot can be done to obtain
temporary or even long-term relief. Depending upon the stage of arthritis, different
treatment options are available, and some new treatments are also being introduced.
Since arthritis is not a disease which can be cured in a single day, different pain relieving
methods are also available that will help the patient deal with this disease in the most
effective and painless manner. Many medicines in the form of oral analgesics or
lubricants are available and can be applied over the affected area for temporary relief.
Hence, instead of turning a blind eye to the serious repercussions of arthritis, it is
important to address this issue and find out ways and means by which you can help your
loved ones sail through it.
If you or a loved one are suffering from arthritis please stop by The Arthritis Association,
we can help you manage your pain by providing specialist diet and exercise plans to help
