1. When does the commodity derivatives contract expire in
India?
Commodity derivative contracts expire on different dates as per the contract
specifications of a given commodity, for e.g. a GOLD futures contract offered
at MCX expires on 5th day of the expiry month ( usually a bi-monthly contract)
whereas an agri based futures contract expires on the last day of the expiry
month (usually a monthly contract).
If an expiry day is a holiday then it would expire on the preceding day to expiry
date. An expiry month is the one in which a contract expires, for e.g. contract start
date is 15th of March and it is a bi-monthly contract with expiry date as 5th then the
expiry month would be May and expiry date would be 5th of May. If 5th May is a
holiday then the contract would expire on 4th of May.
How many months of commodity derivatives contracts
are available in India for trading?
Commodity derivatives are available in the form of futures and options. Future
derivative contracts on commodities are launched by different commodity exchanges
for different periods and may further vary on the basis of contract size for e.g. a
futures contract in GOLD (1 Kg) by MCX is launched bi-monthly and is for a period of
one year whereas by NSE it is launched monthly.
Further, GOLDMINI (100 gm) Futures contract by MCX is a monthly contract for a
period of three months compared to bi-monthly GOLD (1 Kg) contract. Options in
commodities are based on futures contract and are usually of similar
period with expiry of the contract few days before the expiry date of the respective
futures contract in that commodity.
What is the lot size in commodity derivatives contract?
Lot size in commodity derivatives refer to the quantity traded in a contract. In
other words a commodity derivatives contract is usually identified by the name of
the commodity along with the quantity traded, for e.g. A GOLD
futures contract is based on 1 Kg whereas a GOLD MINI contract is based
on 100 gms. Margin requirement for different derivative contracts would vary basis
their lot size, for e.g. margin requirement for a GOLD futures would be higher
(approx..10 times) than a GOLD MINI futures contract. Commodity derivative
contracts with different lot sizes are offered as per the need and convenience of the
market.
