1577 & 1580 - Spanish attacked and tried to conquer
Brunei
1600 - Dutch Admiral, Oliver Van Noort,
visited Brunei
1600 - EIC was establish but failed to establish
settlements along the coast of Borneo to compete
for the spice trade.
1603, 1610, - Dutch established factories Banjarmasin, Sambas,
1622 Soekanada but were attacked and burnt by local
people
1700 - EIC began to focus on the Chinese tea
trade
1761 - EIC signed a Treaty of Alliance commerce with
the Sultan of Sulu
1762 - Britain capture Manila from
Spain
2. 1763 - EIC obtained territories in North Borneo which
belonged to the Sulu Kingdom
1764 - British returned manila to Spain
1773 - A small British factory was
established in Balambangan
1774 - Britain sought refuge in Brunei because
of problems caused by the Sulu overlords;
rejected Brunei’ s offer of Labuan
1775 - Britain abandoned Balambangan
1819 - Sir Stamford Faffles founded Singapore
1824 - Signing of Anglo Dutch Treaty
1826 - Formation of the Straits Settlement
