The document summarizes the process of acquiring and installing a vintage 1908 Thurston snooker table at the British Columbia Government House in 2011. The Lieutenant Governor had the idea to provide a games room for guests. An expert, Jim Boak, was found who located the table from the widow of a cue maker. It was carefully dismantled, moved, and reassembled in a renovated room. The multi-month volunteer project was a success, restoring the historic table for use by visitors.
Zen and the Art of Metadata MaintenanceJohn Warren
Metadata is the lifeblood of publishing in the digital age and the key to discovery. Metadata is a continuum of standards and a process of information flow; creating and disseminating metadata involves both art and science. This presentation examines publishing-industry best practices for metadata construction and management, process improvement steps, practical applications for publishers and authors such as keywords, metadata challenges concerning e-books, and the frontiers of the expanding metadata universe. Metadata permeates and enables all aspects of publishing, from information creation and production to marketing and dissemination. It is essential for publishers, authors, and all others involved in the publishing industry to understand the metadata ecosystem in order to maximize the resources that contribute to a title’s presence, popularity, and sale-ability. Metadata and the associated processes to use it are evolving, becoming more interconnected and social, enabling linkages between a broad network of objects and resources.
The Future of Digital Textbooks, Tools of Change, 2010John Warren
Technology is driving change in education as it is in publishing. Distance education has become more common in higher education; universities are putting podcasts, texts, and entire courses online. The spiraling cost of textbooks is rendering higher education unaffordable to many students, particularly in community colleges, where textbook costs often exceed tuition. In the K-12 market, digital textbooks have been making inroads into the classroom; a California initiative aims to replace many high school science and math texts with free, “open source” digital versions, while the new Democratic Leadership Council has proposed a “Kindle in Every Backpack.” While some may think of a digital textbook merely an electronic image of a paper product, others have employed the electronic format in broadening the spectrum of learning. This session examines the emerging future of digital textbooks, including open access; subscriptions; texts bundled with online study resources; innovative texts that include multimedia, simulation models, automated assessments; and business models that will allow publishers to survive and thrive in the future.
Library as Publisher: New Publishing Ecosystems John Warren
Many academic libraries are moving into the publishing landscape, and an increasing number of university presses are now part of their university library infrastructure. The business of libraries and publishers are now intertwined and overlapping. Libraries have been proponents of open access, whereas many scholarly publishers have been wary about, if not hesitant to implement, open models. How are priorities such as funding and sustainability achieved? The Mason Publishing Group, an initiative within the George Mason University Library, provides support and resources to the George Mason University community for creating, curating, and disseminating scholarly, creative, and educational works. Programs and services of the Mason Publishing Group include the George Mason University Press, scholarly communication and copyright, University dissertation and thesis services, the Mason institutional repository (MARS), electronic journal hosting and publishing, and data publication. Planned services include publication of e-books and conference proceedings. This session provides an overview of the current library publishing landscape and efforts at Mason to create and sustain this initiative.

Launching a new scholarly press involves a number of considerations; many of the decisions to be made involve tradeoffs and ethical considerations. Framing the discussion is the balance between “profitability” and scholarly contribution. Questions of funding sources, recruiting staff, developing editorial and business strategy, creating an advisory board, and evaluating new projects and authors contain ethical choices. Ethical climates vary; the right climate in the organization and fit between alliance partners are key. Deviance in its positive sense can be a source of innovation and creativity. Stories can be used to connect with our readers; stories are also useful in organizations to impart ethics and purposeful direction to organizations. The quest is to change the way we publish—thinking digitally from the beginning of the process, pursuing diverse funding sources, innovating in dissemination and marketing.

2. INTRO: THURSTON SNOOKER TABLE
The snooker table quest all started in November of 2010 when His Honour,
The Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia had
the idea of installing a snooker/billiards table for use by resident guests of
Government House. During the course of any given year, Government
House hosts VIP resident guests such as members of Royalty and Heads of
State from around the world. During their stay they have limited
entertainment options within the House (TV, Internet, Swimming Pool) and
His Honour wanted to provide them with an activity/social area that was
befitting of a vice regal residence. There was once a snooker table at
Government House, and since guests had at times requested one, he felt
that a snooker table and a devoted ‘games’ room were more than
appropriate.

3. Jerymy Brownridge, Director of Operations, was charged with sourcing such
a table. He initially requested the Administrative Assistant, Willow Easton,
to contact some BC & Yukon Legion branches, since we had heard that
some were closing down and we thought they might have a nice table
available. Nothing we came across seemed to be appropriate so we decided
to seek the advice of an expert. An internet search for ‘BC SNOOKER’ came
up with the “BC Cue Sports Society” listed first. Their site looked authentic
to say the least. Willow first tried calling Michael Jaffe, their President. After
no answer, she tried Director Jim Boak’s number. His wife answered and
kindly arranged to have Mr. Boak return her call. Mr. Boak was very
enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
We had found our man.

4. It just so happened that the Executive Director and Private Secretary to The
Lieutenant Governor at the time, Herb LeRoy, was headed to Vancouver that
weekend. A meeting between the two, Mr. Boak and Mr. Leroy, was
arranged for Saturday, November 13th , 2010 at the Terminal City Club.
Back in Victoria a week later, Mr. LeRoy was enthusiastic about Mr. Boak,
his colleagues, and the table to be. Mr. Boak contacted us shortly thereafter,
having found a 1908 Thurston table for us. On Tuesday, November 30, 2010
Jerymy Brownridge went to Chilliwack to the house of Louise Wutke, recent
widow of former snooker enthusiast and cue maker, Dan Wutke, to inspect
the table and approve its purchase. He found it and a selection of her late
husband’s cues very befitting of the House.
Thus the table’s journey to
Government House began...

7. Found a Thurston, note the company inauguration date.
SO WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT A THURSTON ?
8. THURSTON
The name Thurston has been synonymous with the sport of billiards and
snooker since 1799. John Thurston, a fine furniture and cabinet maker by
trade, is considered by many to be the father of modern day billiards and
snooker.
John Thurston was responsible for the introduction of most of the
technological improvements made to tables in the nineteenth century.
This included the slate bed (1826), rubber cushions (1845), and the
bottomless pockets (1887).

1911 by his majesty King George V

10. In 1891 the Thurston table was selected and specified in the “Rules of the
Billiard Association” as the standard on which all Billiard and Snooker tables
are still based.

43. Final levelling is absolutely crucial to this project.
Milan is tapping on the hardwood wedges to make tiny
changes to level the slate on top of the wooden frame.
44. Now the rails will be bolted back on to the slate for sanding. Then the new rubber
cushions will be glued on with the rails still attached to the table.
45. Note that the pocket irons have not been
installed yet so that the rubber cushions can be
marked according to the templates.
