Crystal Bell, a social worker with over 20 years of experience, will give a presentation on supporting children's mental health. She will discuss statistics on mental health and the impact of stigma. Common mental health concerns in children and youth will be overviewed, along with signs and symptoms. Crystal will also explain how to access resources and recognize when a child may need professional help. The four main causes of mental health issues - biological factors, negative early life experiences, individual factors, and current social circumstances - will be identified. There will be door prizes and light snacks provided at the event.

Health Matters is a clinic in Downtown East, Singapore that provides quality healthcare services in a caring environment while respecting individual uniqueness and the role of families. The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as Saturdays from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Title: Where Is the Family in Global Mental Health?

Learning Objectives:
Audience participants will be able to:
(1) Articulate why a central role for families is needed for the effectiveness of clinical and research programs in Global Mental Health (GMH);
(2) Describe how health categories that focus solely on individuals can obscure awareness of relational, social, and cultural processes that contribute to health and illness.
Abstract:
From a family perspective, the Global Mental Health Movement appears as a regressive step to the usual Western health categories that focus on individuals as bearers of larger issues in the family, community, society and culture. These larger envelopes are addressed in the impersonal way of categories—e.g., child abuse, substance abuse, violence, and treatment gaps—rather than from the relational, social and cultural perspectives that define mental health and illness more fully, meaningfully, and realistically. These aspects of GMH may deepen the practitioners’ perception of public health and epidemiology and their international organizations as being removed from clinical concerns and from their meaningful relational contexts. Without such notions as attachment and belonging, ignoring the most significant of human relationships based on the family and community, GMH risks creating another disembodied field divorced from our lived experience as communal and relational beings.

Vincenzo Di Nicola, MPhil, MD, PhD, is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who uses family, social and cultural perspectives to investigate children and families in disadvantaged contexts, both at home and abroad. He works with migrant children and families and the impacts of trauma. Di Nicola is the author of “A Stranger in the Family: Culture, Families, and Therapy” (1997), “Letters to a Young Therapist” (2011), and a forthcoming selection of his writing, “On the Threshold: Children, Families, and Culture Change,” edited and introduced by Armando Favazza, MD, MPH. Di Nicola is Chair of the APA Global Mental Health Caucus and Full Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Montreal. Child abuse on buddhist perspective

This campaign aims to raise awareness of the new ReachOut Parents initiative launching in January 2016. Research found that parents are often reluctant to acknowledge signs of mental illness in their children due to defence mechanisms born of love. The campaign's strategic insight is that parental love can blind parents from seeing issues, and they need to make their child's well-being more important than their love. It will feature videos telling the stories of four parents who lost children to suicide, to show that love alone is not enough and parents must take preventative action to help their children's mental health.

Vincenzo Di Nicola, MPhil, MD, PhD, is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who uses family, social and cultural perspectives to investigate children and families in disadvantaged contexts, both at home and abroad. He works with migrant children and families and the impacts of trauma. Di Nicola is the author of “A Stranger in the Family: Culture, Families, and Therapy” (1997), “Letters to a Young Therapist” (2011), and a forthcoming selection of his writing, “On the Threshold: Children, Families, and Culture Change,” edited and introduced by Armando Favazza, MD, MPH. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the new ReachOut Parents initiative launching in January 2016. Research found that parents are often reluctant to acknowledge signs of mental illness in their children due to defence mechanisms born of love. The campaign's strategic insight is that parental love can blind parents from seeing issues, and they need to make their child's well-being more important than their love. It will feature videos telling the stories of four parents who lost children to suicide, to show that love alone is not enough and parents must take preventative action to help their children's mental health.

Abstract:
This presentation outlines a model of working with traumatized children and families across culture. When it comes to trauma in children, we need to address three basic questions:
(1) why development matters, (2) why family matters, and (3) why culture matters (Di Nicola,
1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2012a, 2012b, 2012c, 2018; Di Nicola & Song, forthcoming). These three aspects of children’s lives are reviewed as key critical contexts to understand the “sequential traumatizing” (Keilson, 1992) of young people as highlighted in two clinical vignettes. In the first vignette, “A Train of Traumas,” the layers of the trauma history of an immigrant child and his family from the Maghreb are teased out as an imbricated series of triggers across developmental, cultural and family predicaments that arise from the “exile situation” (Wenk-Anshohn, 2007). “The Memory Clinic,” the second vignette, revisits the story of an adolescent refugee from a war-torn country in the Middle East whose quest was to forget her trauma. Exposed first to civil war and the loss of her family, then arriving in Montreal as a refugee with her extended family where she was abused, this vignette presents issues about how to create the conditions for listening to the “trauma story” (Mollica, 2009) as enlightened witnesses and the emerging understanding of traumatic memory through identity narratives (Novac, et al, 2017). Together, these vignettes highlight the conditions required for the practice of “trauma-informed care” with children and families across culture.

What effect do lifestyle and the attitudes of those around us have on mental wellbeing and how can we best understand this?
See Me (a government funded organisation tackling the stigma attached to mental health conditions in Scotland) wanted to determine current attitudes amongst children and young people. A collaborative approach with Face and Leith helped identify sensitive attitudinal data for which the results which were frightening, emotional and revealing in equal measure. These insights have informed a comprehensive communications and media strategy for See Me Scotland.

Childhood adversity casts the longest shadow across the entire human life cycle with lifelong pervasive impacts. This presentation integrates three ways to investigate these issues using a mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) approach: (1) retrospective quantitative epidemiological studies of Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) by Fellitti and associates and the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) headed by Marmot with the WHO; (2) quantitative child psychiatric epidemiology prevalence studies, focusing on Canadian studies in two provinces: the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS) (Boyle, et al, 2019) and the Quebec Child Mental Health Survey (QCMHS) (Bergeron, et al, 2000); and (3) Bruner’s more qualitative narrative approach integrating work from developmental psychology and anthropology (Mattingly, et al., 2008).
After a brief overview of North American and worldwide comparisons in child psychiatric epidemiology whose populational surveys of 6-14 year old children show a worldwide average of 20% affected with mental health problems, the focus shifts to Canadian studies in Ontario and Quebec. A detailed portrait of the Quebec survey contrasts the overall Quebec population results of 15% prevalence of mental health problems in children versus the alarming rate of 60% in a sub-study of the disadvantaged neighborhood I have worked in for the last 20 years. This sub-study offers a complex portrait of the negative impacts of ACE and SDH.
My own sub-study of single parent families in the same disadvantaged neighborhood demonstrates that SDH are multifactorial and multigenerational, affecting both more intimate family attachments and broader social belonging. Informed by ACE, SDH and QCMS studies, our community-based child psychiatry program works on more complex and subtle social determinants affecting children’s lives: narrative resources based on the work of Jerome Bruner (Mattingly, et al., 2008), which are rich and nourishing when present yet lead to the impoverishment of affective and social capacities throughout the lifecycle in their absence. Proudly present SUPPORTING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH A Ministry of Education Funded Night for Parents Thursday, October 20th , 2016 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm GUEST SPEAKER – Mrs. Crystal Bell Crystal Bell comes to us with a Master’s Degree in Social Work with over 20 years’ experience working in the helping profession, in health care and community settings as a leader and recently in private practice. Crystal believes that children's mental health is without a doubt the most important aspect of any child's social and cognitive development. She will provide a brief overview of statistics related to mental health, and the impact stigma may have on accessing care. Crystal will discuss the most common mental health concerns for children and youth, providing a brief overview of signs and symptoms. Crystal will discuss how to recognize when yourchild may need help from a health care professional and how to access resources. The four main causes of mental health will be identified: Biological Factors Negative Early Life Experiences IndividualFactor, CurrentSocial Circumstance THERE WILL BE DOORPRIZES WHICH INCLUDE FAMILYPASSES TO GREATWOLF LODGEAND SCENIC CAVES, GIFTCERTIFICATES TO CINEPLEX, BOSTONPIZZA AND DAIRYQUEEN.
