On February 4th, 2015 I gave a talk to the UC Berkeley CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series
Abstract: As internet and communications technologies rapidly advance, digital tools are transforming the lives of people around the globe. However, access to these tools remains unevenly distributed, and very rarely are new technologies designed by and for the most vulnerable communities. What happens when traditionally marginalized groups are placed at the center of this process? What new tools are created? How are these leveraged for environmental and human rights purposes?
From mobiles and mapping to data collection and storytelling, this talk will focus on the lessons learned and approaches pioneered by Digital Democracy’s work in dozens of countries over the past 6 years. From addressing gender-based violence in Haiti to combatting oil contamination and deforestation in the Amazon, Dd’s partnerships with grassroots organizations demonstrate the possibilities for technology to be effectively leveraged by local groups.
Tech, Oil Spills & Indigenous Communities in the Amazon
After 40 years of suffering from oil contamination, indigenous groups in the Peruvian Amazon are fighting back, harnessing basic tools to document the pollution & pressure the government to hold the oil company accountable.
In May 2013, Digital Democracy traveled to a remote part of the Peruvian Amazon to launch a new program with these groups. Remote Access, funded by the Knight News Challenge, is a mobile toolkit to empower people in hard-to-reach places to share critical environmental and human rights information.
Follow our journey along the northern Amazon & up the Pastaza River to see how local indigenous groups are taking action, using basic tools to document four decades of oil spills and contamination.
Safeguarding Democracy: Innovations in tech for human rights
This weekend I spoke on the panel "Safeguarding Democracy: Innovations in Technology & Human Rights" at Netroots Nation 2012, covering Digital Democracy's process & discussing 2 case studies: Burma/Myanmar & Haiti.
Building bridges through digital expression
On Nov 4, 2011 I gave a keynote address to 300 middle schoolers in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana as part of the Imagine Conference. The theme of the conference was building bridges of tolerance & understanding through digital expression. After learning more about their own use of digital tools, I shared with them my story of starting with youth journalism in Indiana, and going on to do projects with young people all over the world. After seeing photos taken by young people in many different countries, the students asked me thoughtful questions about my work internationally and with students here in the United States.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
