My presentation on the codes and conventions of thriller films which includes what they have to be and whats in a thriller film that makes it a thriller
1. THRILLER CONVETIONS A thriller is a type of movie genre which consists of many sub genres, which follows many different types of rules and uses an array of devices in order to create and build certain effects. A technique called dramatic irony is often used in this theme to make the audience engage more with the film/play and feel emotions when viewing it. The conventional thriller usually takes place in an eerie deserted foreign location although some thrillers challenge this by having a more modern view on the theme. By inputting ordinary people into certain dangerous fictional situations, this makes it seem realistic and also to break the traditional conventions of thriller. Most thrillers use the same sort of conventions but just in different ways. For example a thriller usually contains two binary opposites a protagonist and an antagonist not all thrillers stick to this convention as some show the antagonist prevail again to break the conventions as in some cases it makes the audience expected the unexpected which is a good device to use when creating a film. Different and complex narrative structures are also used, in which the film gives clues and misleading evidence as a key to build enigma within the film/play. Also often used are themes of revenge. A huge amount of thriller films combine the following different themes like horror, action, mystery, crime and conspiracy etc. A vast majority of thrillers are psychologically based themes, for example focusing on a characters emotional and mental mind state. Action thriller-This type of thriller usually contains a lot of action hence the name “action” thriller. Guns and huge explosions usually take place with elements of violence involved with the action. Examples for this film sub- genre would be films like crank, James bond and Rambo. Horror thriller- This contains a lot of emotions usually of fear and terror. The main aspect of for this sub-genre is death and usual supernatural activities. Examples of for this film sub-genre are films like saw, psycho and paranormal activity. Crime thriller- This sub- genre mainly focuses on different crimes, focusing on the criminal aspect and often they contain violence and action. Examples for this film sub- genre are films like Scarface, reservoir dogs and seven. Mystery thriller- This genre mainly focuses on crime and usually follows the detective as he/she collects evidence to solve the mystery. This unfolds at the end of the film. Examples for this film sub-genre are films like Sherlock Holmes, The fugitive and North by northwest. Editing and a soundtrack play a huge part in how successful and effective a thriller is, also choosing the right location is important as it makes the audience think because it creates certain connotations related to the film. For example if the location is in a big open dark wilderness this will make it seem the character has nowhere to run to or hide giving the connotation that the character is venerable. By doing this it adds to the enigma making the audience ask the question of what’s going to happen next. Collectively as a group (Ashley, Denis and Amir) we all came to the conclusion that are opening title sequence will be a mystery thriller. As a group we watched various different thriller opening title sequences. We gained several ideas and got influence by some, especially the opening sequence to lucky number slevin when it came to deciding what we were going to do for are opening to are thriller.
