In September 2015, the automotive industry played witness to the largest scandal among its ranks in recent history, as Volkswagen was caught cheating with its pants down. The German car manufacturer had recently overtaken Toyota in sales, in the first half of 2015, to establish itself as the leader of the global car market. Though, this shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, since VW was largely leading the automotive industry in terms of revenues, profits, and assets even in 2013.
The world was left with jaws agape in early September, as the German giant admitted to placing “cheat” software in roughly 11 million of its diesel-engined cars worldwide. Carried out since 2009 onwards, this subterfuge was perpetrated in an effort to deceive pollutant emissions testing in developed markets like US and EU. As investigations into the fraud continue, the primary reason seems to be that Volkswagen did not wish to install a Urea-based exhaust system marketed as AdBlue – roughly $336 per unit – into the “clean diesel” engines which they'd spent years developing for their 2009 models. In-house testing into the engines revealed that they emitted roughly 35 to 40 times the amount of nitrogen oxide, linked to smog, acid rain, asthma, and other illnesses, above the limits allowed by clean air legislation in developed nations.
Suddenly, the car manufacturer was faced with two options – go back to the drawing board and miss out on the 2009 car season, or spend exorbitant amounts of money to fix the problem by retro-fitting their engines with AdBlue. They chose option three – cheat through a “defeat device” software. Ironically, the test which ultimately uncovered the deception was carried out by independent American researchers – working for an NGO, rather than the EPA or other bigwig agencies – to show their European counterparts that diesel engines can be used with cleaner emissions. Despite their published efforts coming to light in 2014, however, the EPA was unable to make Volkswagen admit to the cheat till September 2015 – after threatening to withhold approval for VW's and Audi's 2016 diesel models.
Now, after having lost its CEO in the wake of the scandal alongwith almost a fifth of its share value, Volkswagen is looking at criminal investigations from the US and Chinese governments, a legal penalty for $18 billion for the roughly 482,000 cars it sold in US, and class-action lawsuits from owners of post-2009 VW Jetta, Golf, Beetle, and Passat, as well as similar Audi diesel models. Even though the firm has set aside roughly $7.3 billion to deal with this scandal, early projections show that this amount may be grossly insufficient.

At the same time, personal data from the car like location, number of passengers and driving behaviour of the user can be derived from the collected data by the car manufacturer. This may be a threat to privacy of the car users. In the study reported here we checked the awareness of users of vehicles equipped with such devices. This study shows that the majority of connected car users is not informed properly about the collection of high privacy sensitive data by manufacturers.

Organizations in-charge of shipment and ferrying of goods have increasingly become concerned due to the widespread changes in the economy, the installations of new regulations, and the current initiatives on highway funding. It is of importance to note that some changes progress faster than others. Soon, this is expected to take place in the trucking industry. The shortage of drivers, which has become a universal norm, will ensure that the trucking companies are bewildered so as to be able to attract and ensure that their professionals remain (Trends to Track in 2016 - Article - TruckingInfo.com. 2016). The economic state has taken a back seat, but the direction it has taken is a huge blow for all of the stakeholders in the trucking sector. The following are some of the forces and trends that are expected to reshape the transportation industry in the future.
The United States' economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the world today with about 2.5% annual growth rate. The pace is expected to escalate in the next coming years. The major influencers of the economy are the solid momentum in the domestic market as opposed to a cautious approach to investment in the global environment, which is very emaciated. However, businesses in the country have shown to be conservative on the current elective environment. They continue in spite of lacking a strong dollar and are waiting for growth in the economy that has led to the opportunities of exportation being slim (Regulation & Legislation: Truckers Get the Message - Inbound Logistics. (2016).
Further, weakness is showing by reduced investment levels and productivity; the American economy is expected to resume normality, resulting in labor shortages which might pressurize wages and hence eat into the profits earned by the corporate firms. To curb this, Swift Transportation Company has the objective of remaining active and hence, extending the above average growth for a longer period. The plan by the organization will be of great help because the economic components are continuing at levels that are not sustainable. More concerns threaten the annual economic gains for the organization in the financial year. The risks are associated with the slowing down in the domestic economies overseas. The economies continued slowing is considered a threat because it can constrain the projected growth rate at a mere 1%. When this happens, then, there are very high possibilities that those financial markets at the global level will be hugely affected and this will tran.

Purpose
Freight trucks pose special safety risks. Over 4,000 people are killed annually in accidents related to heavy trucks. Fatalities are about twice as likely in accidents involving tractor-trailer trucks as in those involving automobiles only.
In recent years, the Congress has approved legislation to prevent situations that give rise to unsafe trucking operations. As a means toward this end, the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation and its Surface Transportation Subcommittee requested that United States General Accounting Office (GAO) determine whether certain economic and other conditions could be used as predictors of safety outcomes. GAO’s study had the following three objectives: (1) to formulate a predictive model specifying hypothetical relationships between safety and a set of conditions in the trucking industry; (2) to assess the availability and quality of federal data required to test the model; and (3) to use available data, to the extent possible, to develop a set of indicators that would predict safety problems in the freight-trucking industry.

These findings culminate in a comprehensive set of recommendations for policymakers and practitioners in the Nigerian tourism industry. The findings contribute to the existing literature by providing actionable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers in the Nigerian tourism sector.
The recommendations encompass gender-sensitive planning, infrastructure enhancements, safety measures, and strategic interventions to address financial constraints, ensuring a holistic and sustainable development of the tourism industry in Nigeria.

- 1. THREE OF THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY'S BIGGEST CONCERNS Tri-National Inc
- 2. Introduction Tri-National Inc. is a transportation and logistics company that provides service between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Via its Facebook page, Tri-National Inc. recently posted an article outlining some of the biggest concerns in the trucking industry for 2016. The data was collected by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), who annually conduct a survey of drivers and motor carriers. The latest list includes these three concerns. 1. Mandatory Electronic Logging Devices - By December 2017, all commercial drivers keeping a Record of Duty Status have to use an electronic logging device (ELD) to ensure that they remain compliant with Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
- 3. Trucking Industry Though ELDS are intended to help carriers and drivers track HOS compliance, many drivers are concerned, with 65 percent of survey respondents worried about the impact the looming deadline will have on productivity. 2. Parking - According to the ATRI, truck parking across the country is growing scarcer. As truck parking becomes harder to find, many drivers are forced to drive beyond their allowed limit, often parking in unsafe locations. 3. Poor Infrastructure - Although Congress is working to fund infrastructure improvement, drivers are concerned that poor road conditions will not be remedied quick enough, leading to immediate safety concerns.
