Couching in Nigeria: Prevalence, Risk Factors
and Visual Acuity Outcomes
Authors: Gilbert, C.E.1; Murthy, G.V.S.1; Sivasubramaniam, S.1; Kyari, F.2; Imam, A.3; Rabiu, M.M.2; Abdull, M.4; Tafida, A.5

Couching is still widely practiced in Nigeria
and visual outcomes are very poor. The population needs
to be made aware of the risks associated with the
procedure, and services for high quality, affordable cataract
surgery need to be expanded, particularly in rural areas and
in the north of the country.
Ophthalmic Epidemiology, Volume 17, Number 5, October 2010, pp. 269-275(7)
Community
A group of people having a religion,
race or profession common
A group of people living together in
one place, specially one practicing
common ownership
Community Service
Unpaid work, intended to be of social use,
that an offender is required to do
instead of going to prison
! ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Attitude of Community Service
• Perfection is not the aim
• Best service is not the goal
• Total Count is more important than result

Consequence ?

“Good Enough”
!!!
Let’s think in other way
No charity
We want parity
Surgery Time: A Surgeon’s factor
Arrangements: Many brands of Phaco are portable

Cost of Surgery
• Depreciating value of machines
• Low cost Foldable IOLs are available
• Govt. grants.
Why don’t we request for higher amount of
donations ? ?
