The story follows the life of Okonkwo in a Nigerian village. It describes a cow escaping from a sacred cave and being beaten, which leads to a hospital visit. Later, Okonkwo unmasks sacred masks called Egwugwu and burns down a church. He is imprisoned and upon release kills a messenger, then hangs himself. The village traditions break down with the arrival of British colonialism.
