6. DIFFERENT PATHS TO EMPLOYMENT
PATHS YOU CAN FOLLOW Think about this
Full time employment Working a full day, Mondays to Fridays, or Mondays to
Saturdays, and getting paid with a monthly salary.
A full-time job ties you down, leaving little room for
looking for other opportunities or trying new things.
Part time employment The working agreement will be negotiated and agreed
upon in the form of a contract.
Part-time employment means you’ll only have a partial
income.
Casual employment Working a portion of the working week. Casuals typically work on weekends or after hours. No
casual work is guaranteed.
Fixed term contract Payment will be done weekly or monthly, according to
contract agreement.
When the contract expires, you might be unemployed
again – the company does not need to hire you after the
contract
Apprenticeships and traineeships Working a few hours a week, according to the company
demands.
In an apprenticeship or traineeship you will have to learn
many tasks, complete assignments and work hard.
Commission work
Self-employment
Getting paid an hourly wage, with wages paid according
to the contract agreement.
Working from a start date to a finish date that is set and
agreed upon.
Earning commission means you can make big money if
you sell well, but almost no money if you don’t.
There is no guaranteed income from self-employment
and businesses typically take time to build up
momentum.
