2. People First
Sounds cliché but you have to remember that a
large portion of a PM’s time is spent shepherding
or facilitating.
Poor people skills or lack of social intelligence
can easily tank a project regardless of
certification levels of the PM or the methodology
being used

3. Plan Diligently
Going through proper planning is laborious
You have got to put in the work during the
planning phase regardless of the certification
levels of the PM or the methodology that is being
used.

4. Propagate Information
A great PM must not only be a good
communicator but must also engage in and
facilitate good and timely communication
across the board (vertically and horizontally).
A great PM engages in, encourages, motivates,
and challenges the chain of command and
cross-functional teams to foster good and timely
communication.
A great PM manages the documentation and
storage of communication artifacts not a matter
of “CYA” but for the purpose of good
stewardship.

5. Prod for Progress
Before you can prod for progress, you must
define “SMART” metrics, communicate, and
ensure the audience understands them.
Metrics may vary depending on the type of
program/project. For example some quantum
leap projects provide uncapped funding so a
budget metric is not important in that case.
There are several tools that can be used nudge
or prompt for progress once the “SMART” metrics
have been defined and communicated e.g. a
project plan, a Kanban Board etc.

6. Pay Attention
A great PM possesses advertent abilities that
ensures maintaining a 360 degree view of the
program/project.
This advertency guarantees the cognizance and
the prevention of scope creep before it occurs.
A PM who does not pay attention can derail a
project regardless of certification levels of the
program/project manager or the project
management methodology being used.
