Abstract
As perthe secondlawof thermodynamicsthe efficiencyof the engine dependsuponthe extractionof
workagainstthe heatsupplied.Minimisationof heatrejectionleadstoincrease the work.Heat rejection
takesplace throughthe engine piston, valvesandcylinderheadstothe surroundings. The aimof the
studyisto minimise thisheatrejectiontothe surroundings.Inthisstudyanattemptismade to reduce
the intensityof thermal andstructural stressesbyusingalayerof the ceramic material, likeYttria
stabilizedzirconia(YSZ) whichhaslowthermal conductivity,highthermal resistance,chemicalinertness,
highresistance toerosion,corrosionandhighstrengthwasselectedasa coatingmaterial forengine
component.Thisstudypresentthe effectof coatingonthe pistonandthe performance of modifiedfour
stroke petrol engine andthe emissioncharacteristicsof the exhaustgas. Thermal BarrierCoatings(TBCs)
inpetrol enginesleadto advantagesincludinghigherpowerdensity,fuelefficiency,andmulti fuel
capacitydue to highercombustionchambertemperature.
