3. GRAMSCI - HEGEMONY
RWC- Middle class, father and mother as well as
grandmother. Shirt and tie to school. Educated. Has his
own car. Mum makes breakfast/ packs lunch.
Skins- Tony breaks the theory through manipulating the dad.
Effie comes back early, Tony covers for her, not the other
way around.
Reinforces as he actually still has both parents. Mum makes
breakfast. House is clean and tidy = homely.
Fish tank- Breaks hegemony as there is not a complete
family unit, flat is a mess, Mia has to take care of herself.
Harry Brown- Conforms to the stereotypical granddad
character but then breaks with youth culture as again not
complete family units, involvement with the police.
4. ACLAND
Media representations of delinquent youth reinforce Hegemony.
RWC- Car racing ‘Chicken’ and one goes off a cliff. Knife fight. Drinking,
smoking. Fight with parents, Plato when he steals the gun, kills the
puppies. Trouble with the police.
Skins- Excessive drinking, smoking, drug taking, Sid’s lack of care for
anything. Sex and pregnancy. Little parental control. Vandalism.
Criminal offence.
Fish Tank- Breaking and entering, drinking, fighting, abusive, not
educated, sex with married man, kidnaps child which nearly results in
the childs death. Verbally and physically aggressive.
Harry Brown- Gang culture, riots, heavily involved with the police.
Aggressive, Stereotypically ‘Chavs’, drug taking, murder? Gun culture.
Uneducated, working class (Philo and McRobbie)
