From the Marketing & Brand Head
At the beginning of 2020, we were congratulating ourselves on completing 27000+ events in the past year – a huge
achievement with many big-ticket weddings in our kitty. With a four-fold growth trajectory in 2019, our presence amplified
to over 50 cities in the country. So, while we patted our backs and marched on with new vigour with plans to achieve many
more feathers to add to our hat, mother nature threw us a curveball! The Coronavirus pandemic was and is a shocker. Like
everyone else across the world, it has pushed us all to stay inside our home and maintain social distancing.
It comes as no surprise that the virus that has affected 7.2 million lives globally has put an end to all gatherings - big or small
weddings and events. Yes, our industries have been struck, especially the weddings industry and the hospitality industry. At
one point in time, we were struggling to accommodate dates and venues for the many bookings rushing in for spring-summer
weddings; now we are cajoling all to stay put, follow safety norms and reschedule their events for a later date in the year.
Yes, we have had to shift gears too; to rethink our plans for the year and to revamp our strategy along with all the vendors,
staff and customers we work closely with.
It is evident that right now, the situation is grim, and the idea of planning a wedding seems far-fetched.
But there is hope. We already see couples tying the knot in smaller, intimate ceremonies adhering to the norms of social
distancing. Some are even tying the knot online via Google Hangouts or Zoom. Some even planning surprise virtual sangeet
ceremonies for couples! Talk about innovation! While it may seem prudent to many to delay their nuptials but these deter-
mined few are paving the path for new-age weddings! And such enthusiasm to celebrate no matter what and from no matter
where gives us a renewed hope of things getting back to normal sooner than later.
We present you our 2nd edition of The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in, a comprehensive guide to complete wedding
planning. Browse and read the many stories of hope and triumph across the wedding industry, plan, take notes and most
importantly, get ready for a great winter wedding season 2020!

A wedding lehenga or a bridal saree is not just a piece of fabric but a whole new emotion. Gone are the
days when examining each saree, salwar-suit, lehenga or a piece of jewellery for a young girl’s wedding
had all the women in the family breaking into sobs and sniffles. Yes, the wedding planning itself sets in
motion many overwhelming experiences, launching one-two many emotional responses even today. The
wedding lehenga, a vital part of a young bride-to-be’s wedding trousseau is like the cherry on top. It evokes
all kinds of feeling. And why not? After all, the main piece of bridal couture needs a lot of planning with
many details to consider.
Feels like a lot to take in, right? We agree. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, let’s deconstruct it!
Bridal couture has come of age. It has evolved from ‘within-the-box’ typical ideas to unique, quirky and fun
elements. It’s no longer just a trip to the local market or visiting Chandni Chowk or the local darzi. From
one-time wear outfits (who wants to upstage another bride at their wedding, ha?) to versatile, lightweight
and wearable ones, in the bright dawn of a new decade (and era), bridal fashion is making waves.

Understanding the
Millennial Bride
Brides are no longer shy; they aren’t seeking any
validation and are under no peer pressure.
They are sharp, smart and bold. They do their
research, are knowledgeable and know what they
want. Still, the love for tradition and the yearning to
try something ‘hatke’ or out-of-the-box is strong.
Surprisingly, comfort is the primary concern as brides
want to feel light and carefree at their wedding and
not bogged down with heavy jewellery or heavily
embroidered outfits.

“Such is the change in the millennial bride-to-
be’s personality that the fashion industry is having
to constantly reinvent itself to make clothes that
are sustainable, versatile, disruptive, innovative,
lightweight and comfortable,” says bespoke bridal
wear designer Nivedita Saboo who caters creme-de-
la audience in Mumbai.
Adding their two-bits to a millennial bride’s
personality, Shyamal and Bhumika, the ace designer
duo of the eponymous label, say, “Initially, when we
used to meet brides 15 years back, there were a lot
of specific things that the brides wanted to discuss.
The millennial brides are so well researched, they
come with the picture of the Shyamal & Bhumika
outfits they like along with custom specifications to
suit their needs.”
On this note, Mumbai-based, Bollywood’s darling
designer, Arpita Mehta adds, “I feel the millennial
brides are more relaxed, more aware of their
personal choices. Brides these days are ready to
experiment, which is refreshing for the designers as
well.”

Decoding the
2020 Colour
Wheel
It is a fact, a millennial bride is no
longer bound by tradition to pick
only reds, maroons or deep pinks
for their big day. Today, bridal
wear offers a broad spectrum
of colours. If you were to spend
some time stalking Instagram
profiles of designers, actors-
actresses and influencers, you
would see many brides opting for
unusual shades. With ‘unique’
being the operating word, brides
are open to experiments. So,
don’t be surprised if you spot a
bride in apple greens or neon
blues!
Before we let our minds wander
to rainbow land, let’s look at what
the experts have in mind when it
comes to trending colours.
We can all safely agree that pastel
shades have been in vogue for a
while now. Yet, some brides still
opt for the traditional reds and
emeralds. According to designer
duo Shyamal and Bhumika,
“This year, we will see an amazing
mix of unusual vintage and jewel
colours such as ink blues, mint,
ochre, salmon, and storm grey
with crimson, sapphire, black,
even ivory and gold, with exquisite
embroidery designed using
modern nuances of multi-coloured
overlapping sequins and resham
threads.”
On a different note, designer
Nivedita Saboo says, “Pastels
have become frosty this year
with beautiful hues of frosty pink,
icy blue, silvery grey, gunmetal,
dusty purple, frosty cocoa and
icicle ivory are the colours we
are looking forward to doing this
summer. Emerald green, charcoal
grey, Burgundy, Navy blue are as
pretty and bold for the evening.”
“I think the colour mint will be an
unusual twist to the bridal wear
as it can be worn in any outfit
for both day and evening,” says
Arpita Mehta.

Having nailed the 2020 bridal
wear colours, we have won
half the battle. The next part is
equally important, which is to
understand the silhouettes. While
classic silhouettes will never go
out of fashion, adding interesting
twists will make the outfit unique.
Brides can opt for structure with
flowy fabrics and cascades. For
the pre-wedding functions, brides
can pick from beautiful cuts and
tailored gowns with trails, slim-
fit trousers with corsets. Heavily
embroidered jackets with lehengas
or deconstructed skirts with corsets
that can be used in different ways,
detachable drapes, changeable
saree drapes and versatile
silhouettes, etc., is what Ms Saboo
would recommend brides to
consider this year.
Additionally, brides should consider
“lehengas with sweeping hems are
a rage! Peplum tops on gowns and
lehengas for a modern makeover.
The asymmetrical and ruffled flare
lehengas with a wide shoulder and
jacket blouses and constructed
draped gowns are in trend for the
pre-wedding functions. Signature
ruffle details in lehenga hems and
saree hems bring a delicate touch
to the ensembles,” say Shyamal
and Bhumika.

Traversing the Silk Route
An important point to note when it comes to finalising the bridal dress code is getting the
fabric right. You would say it is a no-brainer and that a bride should opt for the best – silk or
the many varieties of silk. While this is true, there is more.
Brides today can further experiment by opting for light fabrics like translucent French chiffon,
flowy georgette, sheer silk organza, soft cotton, textured satins, and enigmatic tulle. These will
help a bride feel light and comfortable through her wedding festivities.
For the environmentally-conscious brides, natural and biodegradable fabrics like airy silks that
are breathable can be used.

Accessories,
Accessories
and
Accessories!
Up until recently, as the big day
neared, mothers, grandmothers,
aunties and more get ready to
empty the family pitara to ensure
the bride is loaded with family
heirlooms. Yes, the poor girl
could very well advertise for gold
or diamond jewellery. But brides
today know what and how they
want to wear in terms of wedding
jewellery. Yes, even family
heirlooms can be customised.
According to Nivedita Saboo,
minimal is the way to go. Comfort
and lightness of being are of
utmost importance for every
bride and groom. Innovative
and creative play of fabrics and
fabric textures, precision in cuts
and keeping the right volume
in the garment would help
create an opulent outfit that is
comfortable and light in weight.
“opt for jewellery that is impactful
but minimalistic. Keep hair and
makeup light and airy.” Veils
scattered with pearls is a trend to
look out for in 2020.
On the other hand, Ms Mehta
says, “A beautiful embroidered
jacket can be worn with Indian,
western or even a short dress.
Watches are the go-to accessory
as it is versatile. Vintage jewellery
from their mother or grandmother
gives a sentimental touch to the
bride’s attire on her big day.”
19. The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in I 19
Arpita Mehta says: Include a beautiful Indian handcrafted sari; be it Kashmiri, Patan Patola, a
Benarasi or a Kanjivaram depending on what the bride prefers
Shyamal and Bhumika say: A stylish neutral saree and blouse, wear to anywhere lehenga, a pair
of comfortable embroidered wedges, a crop sherwani that can be paired with denim or shararas,
traditional polki jewellery for last-minute accessorizing, embroidered tulle capes to dress up a simple
maxi and a beautiful clutch to carry the essentials
Nivedita Saboo says: Invest in a straight fit metallic gown, a pair of shimmery nude platform heels,
beautiful embellished jacket to be worn with lehenga, pants, corset, saree or an Anarkali. Spend
money on luxe juttis. Definitely include a new-age classic saree, jewelled bags and watches
And last but not least, shining confidence!

The month of March is a month of change; winter
thaws to spring, awaiting the warmth of summer,
flowers bloom, a new harvest season begins. It is
also a crucial month for weddings as it’s just right;
not too cold or too hot but perfect for a beach wed-
ding or outdoor lawn parties.
March 2020 was supposed to be all of this and more
but instead of spring in the air, this year Coronavi-
rus took over! This worldwide COVID-19 pandemic
called for a global lockdown. Simply put, it means
that the spring-summer wedding season is a no-go!
Pallabi & Francesco
This Indian-Italian couple had planned a grand
wedding in a palace in Bikaner, Rajasthan on 8th
March 2020. But Coronavirus had other plans…
“We had a 14-month engagement period. Long,
right?! But it was going to be worth the wait because
we were planning this beautiful wedding where we
had guests from India, Italy, Peru, USA and all over
the globe. Months of planning,” says Pallabi.
Unfortunately, the virus took over the world at the
same time. But the couple thought they had a plan
and so, they flew to India a week earlier to sought
things out and make the most of the situation. “Five
days before our wedding it was announced that no
Italian Passport holders would be allowed to enter
India which meant that Francesco’s parents and his
brother wouldn’t be able to come either,” says Palla-
bi. Yet, the couple decided to carry on. They waited
While the world over, people adjusted with quaran-
tine and lockdowns, many brides and grooms had
their hopes dashed as their dream wedding cere-
monies that had taken months to plan had to be
cancelled.
We spoke to three brides who faced a similar prob-
lem; two brides who had to cancel their big fat wed-
dings and settle for smaller intimate settings. And
the third one had half a marriage, i.e., her mehen-
di, engagement and sangeet ceremony took place
just before Coronavirus shut down the world.

hoping things would change, but just a day later,
while Pallabi awaited the final delivery of her bridal
lehenga, they received more bad news.
“We received information from our hotel that the
local officials have declared that anybody who is an
Italian Passport holder would not be able to check-in
into any hotel. So basically, I had NO GROOM!”
says Pallabi. This was the last straw, and the wed-
ding had to be cancelled.
To get away from all the chaos, they flew to Thai-
land. As they arrived at their hotel, the first thing
they noticed was a wedding décor set up for a
wedding on the same evening. And this was just
the silver lining the couple needed! “As I said, we
don’t know how to give up, but this time, of course,
we didn’t even tell our parents we were considering
something as insane as this. So, what started as a
“Sorry Sir we are fully booked for tomorrow eve-
ning” soon turned into a YES! I mean, who can say
no to two faces with swollen eyes and their story of
the cancelled Dream Wedding in India!”
And folks, that’s how these two tied the knot on
8.03.2020!

Deepika & Chitang
Bride Deepika Ghose and Groom Chitang had
planned a destination wedding in Phuket, Thailand
for 7th and 8th of March 2020.
“I had dreamed and planned with every detail – it
was my wedding after all, and like most girls, I had
been planning it since before I can even remem-
ber,” says Deepika. The couple had waited for a
long time, six and a half years to be precise when
it came to finalising their wedding day. They had
braved many delays and changes and had finally
managed to work out the dates that suited both
families.
“We even had a traditional Gujarati card writing
ceremony a month before the wedding dates so we
couldn’t change the dates!” adds Deepika. But the
Coronavirus happened, and things started to fall
apart… “I was still hopeful that the situation would
die down, and we would still be able to have our
dream destination beach wedding. We had paid for
everything in advance - hotels, vendors, Thailand
based planners, all our guests had booked flights
etc...”
But as the pandemic worsened, they started worry-
ing and were torn between cancelling, postponing
and relocating the wedding. Unfortunately, the
situation became such that their grandparents were
asked not to travel as their age was a risk factor.
And this decision prompted them to have a small
They spent the entire morning on a serene beach as
the wedding took place in the afternoon. And no,
there were not alone when they said ‘I dos’! “Our
friends Luca and Livia were already backpacking
in Thailand but little did we know that they would
travel 10 hours by road to reach us for our wed-
ding. Little did we know that Luca would marry us
and Livia would walk me down the aisle. And so,
just like that, we became Mr. & Mrs Alivia!”
For her beach wedding, Pallabi wore a beauti-
ful sage green organza saree by Sabyasachi and
Francesco wore a sherwani from Manyavar. It was a
simple, sweet and an extraordinary ceremony.

intimate ceremony in Mumbai itself, at Deepika’s
Nani’s house with their immediate family present.
So, with their grandparents, parents and real sib-
lings, they tied the knot in a simple ceremony.
“It was beautiful and meaningful and special - I
have practically grown up in that apartment, and
it is also where my parents got married, so it was
auspicious for many reasons.,” says Deepika.
The couple, albeit happy with their situation, did
want to celebrate with their friends and extended
family, but that would be a story for another day.
Just ten days before their actual wedding date, they
had to cancel all their bookings in Phuket as the
situation had gone from bad to worse. So, they de-
cided to have smaller functions in Bangalore set on
7th & 8th of March. Lucky for them India was not in
complete lockdown yet.
Deepika and Chitang then planned an entire wed-
ding from décor to venue to everything else in 10
days! Of course, there were heartbreaks as many
guests couldn’t make it and they couldn’t replicate a
beach wedding, so they had to make do with what
was available to them.
“We learned to let go of the small things and minute
details that I was once so determined to perfect for
the occasion. We consciously focused on the mean-
ing behind the wedding and the celebration and
what’s important. Our guests were so helpful, sup-
portive and understanding every step of the way and
we felt so blessed and so grateful that we were able
to still have a celebration as well as our meaningful
wedding. We learned how to approach the situation
with grace instead of regret, and we were all happy
with the way (most) of it went off.”

Simran & Ruchit
The months of January and February are the best
months to get married in Mumbai. Yeah, as the is-
land city doesn’t have a winter season, these months
are comparatively cooler, and there is certain spring
in one’s step we think!
Bride Simran and groom Ruchit had elaborate wed-
ding plans between January and February 2020.
This good-looking pair met through mutual friends
and one month into the relationship, Simran knew
he was the one for her!
They had planned five events – two in Mumbai and
three events over a three-day cruise in Singapore.
Their cruise was to bring together 300-400 guests
and loved ones from across the world, and it was to
be one big party! Sounds exciting, right? Yes, it was
until COVID-19 happened.
Their Sangeet, the wedding and reception took
place on 29th & 30th of January 2020. These func-
tions happened without any glitch. For the Sangeet,
Simran looked stunning in a Manish Malhotra en-
semble – a heavily embroidered skirt with a ruffled
hem and a ruffled dupatta draped on the side with
a sexy blouse. The groom matched her in a dapper
outfit by Raghavendra Rathore. For the wedding and
reception, she wore a gorgeous Anushree Reddy

lehenga, and the groom wore an outfit by designer
Sonam Luthria.
All was going well until the coronavirus spread rap-
idly across the world. Soon, it was termed as a Pan-
demic by WHO. So, the couple had to re-think their
cruise trip. “There was no lockdown imposed then,
but many cases were being reported from different
parts of the world. We were going to have so many
guests over from different locations. We did not want
to risk it as if something untoward happened then
the entire crowd would be in danger. So, we decided
to postpone it indefinitely… for now!” says Simran.
So, what’s in store next? “We are going to continue
it as is! And mostly make it our 1st-anniversary cele-
bration!” adds Simran.
That sounds like a plan to us, and we hope they do
get to party on their cruise as promised!

The perfect gown, unlike the perfect man, is no myth! Therefore, to-be-brides need not settle for a wedding
gown that isn’t the stuff of their dreams! For brides to never experience disappointments or hassles with
their dream wedding gown, two people, partners in life and crime, Peter and Kimi Devadas, are your
knight’s designers in shining armour! The duo came together to start Bride & Beautiful with a vision to
create that perfect fairy tale moment that every bride dreams of. Incidentally, the idea behind the label
struck the couple when they were planning their own wedding!
“The idea of Bride & beautiful started with the search for my wedding gown. In our search, we found that
there was a huge gap in the market where gowns were mainly imported or were not up to the mark at least
in comparison to gowns available in the west. Given Peter’s experience with garment manufacturing and
export, we decided to make a few prototypes to see what we could achieve. It wasn’t long before we realised
that this was a potential business opportunity and that there was the birth of the brand,” says Kimi.
Your Search for the Perfect
Gown Ends at Bride & Beautiful
28. B & B aims to be able to add that unique charm and magic to a bride or a special bridesmaid moment. The
creation of each gown is a unique process; from getting to know the bride to understand her idea of the gown
and then bringing it to life is always beautiful in every aspect.
As we know how important it is to get the gown right, we asked the Kimi and Peter Devadas to share some in-
sights for to-be-brides before they finalise their wedding ensemble:
Q. Let’s talk about the latest trends in wedding gowns?
Kimi: Given the changes our world is experiencing now; we feel that blending of different dimensions and new
realities would be the essence that trends would mould out of this coming season. Ours to be specific would be
translated into an illusion of layers, tonal/multi hue effects and sheer fabrics, with a design aesthetic of the
gradient, semi-structured and moderate flares would be something to lookout for.
Q. Before setting out to select a gown, what are the things a bride should consider?
Kimi: The few things that we always like to tell our brides to keep in mind when trying to decide on a gown with
emphasis on decisions on fits & trails, colours and necklines and a cost attached to it are -
1. Location: on whether the occasion in outdoor or indoor?
2. Time factor: Day or night?
3. Theme: Is there a theme for the décor?
4. Budget: everything you want has a cost attached to it, and there has to be a balance.
Q. How to customise wedding gowns? Tips and tricks.
Kimi: Our advice on tips for picking out gowns would be the fit of a gown or how it suits
the body type and also keeping in mind height is the most critical aspect. The saying
“seeing is believing” applies to the ‘T’ here so there ought to be no hesitation to try out the
different fits to find the right one and also keep an open mind to advice and suggestions.

Up until a few years ago, when asked about wedding
fashion, a groom-to-be most likely would reply with the
same answer (like most other grooms), i.e. yes, their
Sherwani as per the bride’s lehenga colour had been
bought with a couple of Indian wear options for the rest
of the functions. Boring, right? Very. But this was in the
past.
Welcome to 2020, the year of style and glamour. The
wedding industry is no stranger to fashion trends. Sure,
the brides will slay their wedding looks, like they have
been all these years, but this year, the grooms will
be equally in focus! From a whole gamut of colours,
fabrics, textures to patterns, designs and prints, etc. the
new age groom has access to all these and more!
“The wedding outfit should represent who you are,
without overpowering your personality”, says the talent-
ed menswear designer, Sahil Aneja on men’s wedding
fashion.
The grooms of today invest just as much time as brides
to get the perfect wedding outfits. They aim to be sleek,
stylish and uber cool in their own way while keeping
their comfort level to the maximum. Unlike his prede-
cessor, the millennial groom is making his personal
sartorial choice.

RakhnaDear men, remember, some-
thing casual and classy
would work best for your
mehendi ceremony.
“Apart from sherwanis, the
classic bandhgala look is an-
other great option or to give
it an edgy look one can do

bandhgala look as well”,
shares Sahil.
Party
ShartyThe reception ceremony
is a more formal event,

for a well-fitted Tuxedo or
opt to go for an offbeat
outfit. Designer Asif Mer-
chant adds, “A nice Tux
worn with a kurta shirt in-
stead of a regular shirt and
bow will give you that edgy
and fusion look.”
To this, TISA experts add
“Layering is the best option
for Sangeet/cocktail because
it gives the groom
the scope of experimentation
and he can also keep the
bandhgala open or remove
it completely according to his
comfort through the evening.”
Shaadi BiyahAs a groom-to-be, you ought to set the floor on fire

Types of Sherwanis
Of course, there are no fewer options for grooms but what better than a sher-
wani for the wedding? The classic Sherwani offers a lot of options and styles
that grooms can choose from!
1. Jodhpuri Sherwani
Feel like true royalty when you wear a Jodhpuri Sherwani. It is
sure to add a touch of elegance to your persona. The vibrancy
and refined look make this a go-to wedding outfit for all kinds of
grooms.
2. Indo-western Sherwani
The perfect touch of traditional and modern, the Indo-western
Sherwani is a good option if you are looking at trendsetting fash-
ion. Contrasting colours, different embellishments, cuff styles,
buttons, etc., explore and experiment what suits you and your style
the best.
3. Anarkali-style Sherwani
Inspired by the Mughals, the Anarkali-style Sherwani speaks of the
aristocracy. If you’re looking at redefining the groom’s styling, you
must opt for this style.
4. Achkan Sherwani
A button-down Sherwani that can be paired with dhoti pants or
churidars, the Achkan Sherwani is a fashion favourite among
grooms. It is a popular choice for a groom who likes to take their
fashion game a notch higher.
1. Pair it right - You can choose between a stylish churidar or a fluffy dhoti
2. Pick your colour - Don’t shy away from experimenting with the colour 3. Choose a comfy
fabric - Look for contemporary options like cotton-silk for a regal look 4. To embroider or not
to embroider - Embroidered or self-designed, choose something comfortable

Groomswear Jewellery
Until recently the focus was on bridal jewellery but times have changed and now equal attention is given to
the dapper groom. Not just the bride, today, there are numerous jewellery pieces for the groom as well. In
fact, historically speaking, men’s jewellery was known to be much more ornate than the ones designated for
women. In short, the men aka the groom in question here should try out interesting jewellery options to add
to his look.
Kalgi
A Kalgi is an adornment worn to enhance the pagdi or turban. You can choose be-
tween pearls, features, gemstones and more for your kalgi!
Haar
A string of pearls is a classy accessory choice for the grooms as it comple-
ments pastels, gold, brocade and velvet fabrics.
Statements Accents
From cufflinks to brooches, there are several accessories to enhance
your outfit. Get a customized brooch with your lady love and your initials
to personalize the accessory.
Brooch
Whether you want to make a style statement at your mehendi ceremony or your
wedding, a brooch certainly adds grace to your ensemble.
Statement Rings
TISA suggests that statement rings for the grooms can soon be the next offbeat acces-
sory to become a hit in the wedding industry.

What a Man Needs?
If you thought you would only have to concentrate
on your face to look your best, you are wrong, my
friend! Beard, hair, skincare health - know about all
these and more in this article.
Until very recently, a wedding was always about
the bride - her dress, her look, her pictures, every-
thing. But with time, the grooms have started getting
their due (and well deserved) attention too. Have
you seen the grooms these days?!
So, dear grooms, some of you may already be au
fait about the grooming products for you, spending
time styling your hair or shaping your beard while
for the others, a bath and a shave is enough to be
taking it to the next level.
Whether you fall in the first half or the latter, groom-
ing is vital to look and feel the best on your big day.
If your wedding is planned for the near future, now
is the time to get started with your grooming. Most
men realize too late; they panic a week before, and
there’s only so much you can do in such a short
span of time. So, from what to how, we have got
you covered!
Taming the Beard
The beard is the new ‘in’ thing, and we definitely
can’t deny its charm! Bollywood actors like Sha-
hid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh have been slaying
with their looks, thanks to that beard. And if it is
the beardy-kind of look you are aiming for your
wedding, there are some things you should keep in
mind.
“Beard grooming is one of the essential ele-
ments of growing, maintaining, and styling facial
hair. A well-groomed beard is critical to good
beard care because it signifies that you are
willing to take the time to clean, maintain, and
take care of your beard. And while grooming
your beard is easy, men must understand the
basics of washing, combing, brushing, trimming,
and styling to ensure the perfect beard. Do not
experiment with a new beard style; keep it neat
and well-groomed 3-4 days before the D-day
and use beard softener/oil regularly,”says Jayati
Mehra, Sr. Marketing Manager at Ustraa.
38. 38 I The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in
There are chances that you have been managing and
shaping your beard by yourself all this while but now
would be a good time to opt for a salon treatment and
let the experts take over!
You also need to pay attention to beard styles
according to the shape of your face. Here are some
expert insights as suggested by Ustraa:
Square: The angle of your jaw is sharp rather
than round and thus make sure that the chin
area is rounded or triangular. A chin patch and
a moustache that forms a beard would suit you
best
Round: The jawline for a round face isn’t as
defined as the others. So, a short beard with
neatly trimmed sides will do the trick for you!
Oval: A moustache which covers your
entire top lip will look best since you have a
larger forehead than the jawline and the jaw
is rounded
Hairstyle Goals
Haircuts for men have evolved so much in recent
years, thanks to celebrities giving us the new #Hair-
Goals now and then. Everyone is up for a change and
would love to experiment with a modern look. But we
wouldn’t recommend this just before your wedding.
“Go for a haircut at least 15 days before your wed-
ding.” Says Mehra.
But if it is something that you want to do, we suggest
trying the look well before your wedding day so that in
case it doesn’t match your expectations; you can go
back to your tried-and-tested look.

Hairstyling Tips for
Grooms by Ustraa
If the shape of your face is:
Rectangle: Try the Pompadour or side
parting
Oval: Try the Pompadour, side parting or
a quiff
Square:The undercut, quiff or side parting
Heart: A side parting or a quiff
Triangle: A textured pompadour, curly top,
and quiffs
Round: A side part, French crop or
pompadour
Diamond: A messy fringe and wavy
side part
Skin Care
Ask a bride where she’s got her glow from, and she’ll
say ‘it’s the haldi’ but it never really is. There are vari-
ous things one needs to do to keep their skin flawless
and blemish-free. Your wedding is one of those days
when you will be the centre of attention in most pic-
tures, so you ought to make sure you are looking your
best!
“The universal skincare regime suggested by everyone
is cleansing, toning and moisturising followed by every-
one, irrespective of the gender. It’s the most effective
routine which gives crystal clear and fresh skin in just
15 days. Get a nice facial done one week before at
least and keep your skin clean,” says Jayati at Ustraa.

Don’t Forget to:
Drink Lots of Water: Water helps in
solving a lot of internal problems. Drink plenty of
water and stay hydrated
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: If you’re a
smoker, reduce smoking for a month and quit it a
week before the wedding
Eat Right: Eat more vegetables and good food
than junk and oily food
Work Out: Make work out a part of your daily
routine and experience the instant change in energy
Skin Care Tips from Ustraa: Tip Box
Wash Up: This may seem silly, but from the moment you get engaged, start washing your face properly.
Not just soap and water, invest in a good cleanser and a weekly exfoliator and you’ll soon notice an extra
polish to your complexion
Drink Up: Water doesn’t just replenish your insides; it works wonders on your skin as well
Eat Healthy: Oily and greasy food clogs up your system and in turn, your skin. Say goodbye to oily food
and stock your fridge with fresh veggies. Olive oil, fish particularly salmon, carrots and green tea are the
secret to healthy skin. Incorporate them into your diet, and you will be amazed by the results
Proper Sleep: Sleep is also vital for a groom to get rid of baggy eyes or dark circles. Get at least eight
hours of sleep every day. This will add radiance to your skin. Avoid drinking and smoking should as they
cause dryness
Work Out: A regular workout is a must
Smile Please!
You are going to hear this a lot! And there’s
nothing you can do but smile. So, you must make
sure your teeth are shining white on your big day.
Ward off those stains with some professional help
if needed. But other than that, here’s how you can
get that radiating smile:
Use a tooth whitening toothpaste
Go natural with some DIY tips off the internet
Brush like a pro
Floss like a boss

Tips
Use a de-tan cream which brightens, lightens and
evens the skin tone. Next, use a scrub - superior exfo-
liation with bigger walnut granules helps reverse the
effects of sun tanning. It helps remove the dead skin
cells for de-tanning, and to prevent acne -acne, use a
face wash with neem and charcoal ingredients
So, before you do anything else, here is a quick guide
for your pre-wedding preparations:
Get a haircut
Go for a manicure and pedicure
Shape that beard!
Get rid of any nose or ear hair
Shower
Scrub
Moisturise
Maintain oral hygiene
Opt for some makeup
Drink water for that extra radiance

Getting Intimate:
Guide to Wedding Lingerie
44. 44 I The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in
Abride does not want to be bothered with a
bra strap peeking from her blouse or the in-
evitable humidity of Indian summer causing
discomfort in her intimates, right?
In the bigger frame of things, bridal linge-
rie may seem like a small and an inconse-
quential factor but it’s these tiny elements
that make the most difference. A bride will
want everything perfect for her special day so
why ignore the garments that form the foun-
dation of how her outfit is going to look? It’s not
like she can pick the first items placed on display
and assume they will do the trick for all the outfits. If
you are getting married this summer, there are some fac-
tors that play a role in the decision-making process.
1. Play with Prints
Just because your outfit is going to conceal your
lingerie, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to plain
and boring colours. Of course, you have to con-
sider the colour of your outfit and accordingly pick
the intimates. To do complete justice to your sum-
mer wedding, pick colours and prints
that complement the season. Florals and pastel
shades are obvious choices for summer but you can
also go for some citrus prints which work well as a
quirky option.
45. The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in I 45
2. Fabricated
3. Know it All
An absolute must is trying the lingerie with the outfit before the ceremo-
ny. An Indian wedding comprises 3-4 different ceremonies, each
one requiring a different outfit and hence, different silhouettes.
From nipple covers to boob tape to strapless bras, learn
about different available options. A padded seamless bra
is easy on the skin and will make sure that your breast
doesn’t seem flattened with all the heavy work. “While
most of the brides focus on lingerie that looks fancy,
they forget the importance of buying a good nude
bra which goes well under all the attires”, says a
representative from Wacoal India. Also, don’t shy
away from including shapewear in your collec-
tion. Shapewear can do wonders when it comes to
hiding that extra or unwanted roll of skin! Again, all
this needs to be tried keeping in mind you are getting
married during summer and it can get really humid!
No woman enjoys beads of sweat trickling down
and finding their home in her cleavage. This sense
of discomfort will heighten if the bride opts for
a heavily padded bra for any outfits. Such a bra
absorbs and retains heat and moisture. According
to Cora Harrington, Founder and Editor-in-Chief
of the world’s leading lingerie blog‘The Lingerie
Addict’, “Fabrics that are light and soft against the skin
are essential here. Think brushed cotton, Pima cotton,
and silk (which is the ultimate in terms of comfort and
breathability). If you prefer a bit more support or a
contour cup, look for bras made with a textile called
“spacer fabric,” which is more breathable than foam
cup options. Avoid polyester satin at all costs! You’ll want
to avoid nylon chiffon as well. Both will just soak through
with moisture and leave you feeling damp and uncom-
fortable.”
46. 46 I The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in
4. Take your Time
Don’t rush into buying anything immediately; try on
different options, get an idea of how comfortable
you are and then accordingly make an informed
decision. Most brides tend to lose weight before
the wedding so keep that in mind while selecting
your foundation garments. If you are small-chest-
ed, choose something that is padded but if you are
on the heavier side, it is a matter of knowing how
to make it work with non-padded or thinly-padded
bras.
Above all and what’s most important is that you feel
sexy, incredibly comfortable and confident in what
you wear. There is no sense in purchasing a lingerie
set that is super-sexy but does nothing if you are not
completely comfortable and feel confident in it.
Tips
(Going Backless): One doesn’t want to be bothered about the straps showing and slipping during
the grand celebration. For the backless look, invest in a good silicone stick-on bra or nipple pasties
which not only avoid showing the bra straps but also bring out the oomph factor of the look
One thing I like to recommend is wearing your wedding undergarments before the big day, so you can
identify any issues ahead of time. That way, if you need to purchase something new, you can. No one
should be miserable on their wedding day!

How to Pick
Lingerie?
When it comes to steamy lingerie, the question
of comfort always arises. Women who can spend
an entire day in them deserve a clap on the back!
We got in touch with Cora Harrington, lingerie
expert and author of ‘In Intimate Detail’ to discuss
the finer points of honeymoon specific lingerie. “I
always believe the most important thing is com-
fort. Not just comfort in terms of fit, but comfort in
helping you feel like the best version of yourself.
You should feel confident and gorgeous on your
Honeymoon. The one blessed vacation you take
with your partner before you start getting repulsed
by them. Ah, the honeymoon. Two kinky monkeys
hopping around the town, waiting to explore the
hidden pleasures of mindless sex. You know what
will help you unravel the pleasures of honeymoon?
Some steaming hot lingerie. If sex is a hot fudge
sundae, lingerie is the cherry on top, acting as the
perfect addition. There is no denying the fact that
even simple lacy lingerie can turn tables. Numerous
women have claimed that lingerie
boosts their confidence and instantly makes them
feel powerful. Five days or five weeks, some special
lingerie for each night might help to spice up the
vanilla ice cream. It hardly occupies any space so
stack ‘em up! Soumya Kant, the founder of one of
India’s fastest growing lingerie brands, Clovia, is of
the firm belief that lingerie can be a game-changer.
Lace lingerie, bralette, backless bra, resort wear and
babydolls are must-haves in every lady’s honeymoon
trousseau.
honeymoon, not anxious or uncomfortable. That
said, it’s also the perfect opportunity to try some-
thing new...whether that’s a new brand or a new
style. recommends Cora. Unlike your wedding
lehenga, your honeymoon lingerie can be used
time and again. “Soft jerseys and knits, such as
a little tank top and shorts combo are always a
great idea. Other “sexy comfort” items include
bralettes, tap shorts, chemises, robes (who doesn’t
love a little shoulder peeking out from underneath
a robe?), or even a half-buttoned nightshirt.” she
continues.

Tight underwear often leads to chafing and de-
creased circulation. The ultimate lustre fabric silk is
not your vajayjay’s best friend as it can cause yeast

wired bras and thong panties and make sure you
are utterly comfortable in them. Remember, only
pack them if you love them!

Destination’s Role
in Lingerie
Yes, my dear, your honeymoon destination does
determine the kind of lingerie you should carry with
yourself. Cora suggests purchasing a sherpa-lined
robe or cashmere pajamas in case you go to a ski
resort or a cold place. Soft padded bras are a good
option too, considering what the winter winds can
do to your nipples. But at the same time, there is no

winters. If you’re honeymooning at a beach resort,
a sheer chiffon caftan or teddy may be a better
choice. Try to stick to breathable fibres such as cot-
ton and bamboo and to avoid synthetic materials.
Care for your
Lingerie
Taking good care of your intimates can significantly
increase their lifespan. You can’t just crumple them
and fit them in your suitcase. Packing them neatly

Bridal Hair Colour
and Hairstyles
Written by Yosha Patole
You are never fully dressed without great hair!
Our hair is a style statement in itself. Whether you have short hair or long, there’s so much that
you are saying with your hair. As a bride, you are going to be the focus at all times and that means
having the perfect makeup and hairstyle.
No one knows you better than you and so, obviously, you cannot just leave all these details to your
hairdresser or hairstylist. It’s important to know what will suit you keeping in mind your hair length,
hair colour, face cut and style!
52. 52 I The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in
We spoke to some industry experts who have years
of experience in bridal hair styling, hair colour and
more. In this article, we share what’s best for you in
terms of styling your hair for your big day.
“When choosing your wedding hairstyles along with
deciding what suits you, you should also consider
other factors such as the weather, if it is indoor or
outdoor, and hairstyle building”, say Anjali Merchant
and Divya Sabanayagam, the founders of Dryfix.
Making things absolutely easy and clear for us,
Dryfix says, “Curls and braids with coloured hair
work very well.”
When asked about which styles work best with
coloured hair, they said:
1. Make it Bounce – A smooth bouncy out curl blowdry
2. Breaking Braid – A voluminous braid that starts
from the top of your head to the tip
3. Bun and Only – An elaborate braid with a base
of curls and then pinned. Works great with flowers
4. Wonder Waves – Loose brushed out waves that
roll from the top of the head to the bottom
When picking the right haircut, your face’s shape is
one of the most important things to keep in mind.
According to your face shape, here’s what will suit you:
Oval: If you have an oval face, be thankful. Thanks
to your face cut, a wide variety of haircuts suit you.
Go for a bob or blunt cut for a cute look and a
layered cut for a subtle look with a longer length.
Round: Round, fuller cheeks and a narrow
forehead, a haircut that makes your face longer in
length will be best. Stay clear of bobs and single-
length cuts!
Square: Broad forehead, wide cheekbones and a
strong jawline, long layers with a side partition is
sure to look great!
Heart: With a broader forehead than a slim chin, you
can amp up your look with a bob cut or a pixie cut,
that will draw attention to the lower half of your face.

Haircare Before your
Wedding
Things to Consider for
Hassle-free Hair at the
Wedding:
Before you start getting ready for your big day, there are
some things you must keep in mind to avoid any last-minute
goof-ups:
1. Avoid getting new scalp treatments a month before your
wedding
2. Avoid any permanent straightening or cysteine treatments
3. Avoid a new haircut or hair colour just before your
wedding
4. Test your hairstyles before hand
5. Ensure that the hairstyle is complementing your outfit,
makeup and jewellery
Choosing the hairstyle isn’t enough. To have the perfect
look, you must make sure to have the other details in
sync as well:
Where is the function: Indoor or outdoor, make sure
your hairstyle is comfortable for the respective setting.
Climate: Consider the climate and opt for a hairstyle
that would keep you comfortable.
Hair building: If you have two or more functions on
the same day, you can build one hairstyle on top of
another. “For example, do open curls for the first and
then put those into a fun updo or pony for the night.
Or, a blowdry tied into a bun that you can let loose for
the night. Always better to not wash your hair between
styles so they stay longer.” - adds Dryfix
Don’t forget these!
- Don’t wash your hair on the day of your wedding
- Don’t rush your hairstyle artist/team
- Don’t forget backup
“Get a Moroccan oil hair spa for treating dry and damaged hair. Argan oil head
massage works well to hydrate the scalp and strengthen roots” - Dryfix

in Bling

56. “Jewellery is like that perfect spice
that always complements what’s
already there.” - Diane Von Furstenberg
Jewellery has long been that one element that attracts
women across ages. And believe us when we say, each
piece of jewelry worn at an event, be it a wedding, a party,
even at small get together at home, draws attention of one
and all. It is a symbol of status, of taste, often reflecting the
wearer’s persona. Jewellery also helps make a statement
and an unique piece of jewellery easily pushes one to be
the centre of attention anywhere they go. And in the recent
times, cocktail rings have caught the eye of one too many
connoisseur of bling. Yes, we are talking about cocktail rings.
Like its name, the cocktail ring was literally born for
cocktail parties. But these cocktail parties weren’t hosted
by the elite, the famous or the aristocracy. Unbeknownst
to many, cocktail rings were born in the 1920s, in the
heart of the prohibition era. The society was undergoing a
major change. Uprisings and revolutions were common. It
was also a time when women gained more freedom. Their
role in society wasn’t limited to being just a housewife
or a mother. They were stepping out in the world, albeit
a man’s world and making their presence felt. This was
no easy task. Therefore, difficult times called for bold
measures such as enjoying the illicit alcohol and dazzling
one and all with a stunning cocktail ring! In short, it was
an expression of freedom as well as a rebellion.
Now that we have established its origins in the world of
jewellery, it doesn’t particularly belong to a hierarchy. But
they are the OGs of bling for sure! And there is no reason
why a beautiful woman shouldn’t announce her ‘arrival’
wearing an equally beautiful ring, right?
An epitome of excess, these rings were dramatic, often
designed with a large precious stone at the centre, mostly
an emerald or ruby, even a sapphire surrounded by paved

on the left hand, it was testimony to the fact that this piece
was bought by the wearer aka woman herself - another
symbol of independence.
In the recent times, cocktail rings have made a comeback
in a big way and they are famous with millennial women
and brides. This is because they view their wedding
jewellery in a different light. Jewellery is not purchased
only for the day of the wedding or to wear to family
functions. Jewellery pieces have to be practical and
versatile. So, with these two keywords in focus, a cocktail
ring is a must.
Millennials often prefer jewellery that is unique, reflects
their persona. They also prefer minimal pieces and if one
such piece can do the trick then why not?! A cocktail ring
fits the bill. Plus, an independent millennial bride may
indulge herself and buy the bauble!
“Nowadays women pay heed to more styling and wish
to add more statement pieces to their wardrobe,” Plus,
these days nobody likes to wear multiple rings but looks
forward to wearing one big jewel speaking for itself”
says Anjali Rach, Head Designer & Owner, Jhoomer Jewels.
So as one sets out to make the splash, what are the
important points to note? “Today there is no dearth of
colours when it comes to these statement rings. In terms
of designs too, the variety is huge. In fact, so many
variations are available that a bride-to-be is bound
to find something that is to her taste and matches her
personality,” says Anjali.
Pradeep Jethani, CEO, Founder and Owner of Jet Gems
adds, “like any other element of fashion, the basic rules
remain the same here — choose something that suits
your personality. Whatever the look is, you should be
able to carry it off with ease.”

How to Pick and
Choose the Right
Cocktail Ring?
“When shopping for jewelrey, we always
recommend that you Establish your budget. This
will help you and the jeweller narrow down the
options. In jewelry, there is quite a large range of
pricing options—ranging from a couple hundred
to thousands of dollars depending on the various
factors,” says Jethani.
Anjali Rach of Jhoomer Jewels adds, “As the gold
prices have inflated so much, a good cocktail
ring starts from Rs 90000 onwards . Atleast 10
Gms of gold and 1.5 ct of diamonds go to craft
one nice statement ring.”

To Invest in a
Cocktail Ring or Not?
“Absolutely! One which goes with their western look
and the other which goes with the indian. Wearing a
cocktail ring gives statement look to your attire as it
helps you highlight your hand.” says Rach.
Currently, pastels colours are the in thing when it
comes to jewellery as is with couture. The deep
reds, greens and blues are off. “What is trending is
pinks for which we use pink sapphires or morganites,
light greens for which we use light emeralds or
chrysophrase. Lately we use lot of carved stones also
which give natural feel to the jewel.”
“There has never been such a wide variety of
cocktail rings, showcasing all the colors of the
rainbow and virtually-designed in every style
imaginable. For jewelry lovers & millennial brides
who like to make bold statements, a cocktail ring
is a wonderful addition to a jewelry collection in
today’s times.” says Jethani of Jet Gems.

some design around it
Tips
Tips to choose the right cocktail ring
1.Opt for a piece which has different styling and look
2.As we don’t tend to own lot of cocktails rings, make sure that you are comfortable in carrying the
colour of the stone so that it enables you to wear with various outfits

“I cannot get over my wedding video even today (rolls her eyes), after so many years of my marriage.
The cliche and super-mushy poses my husband and I struck and the fact that two hearts with his face
inside them appeared on my palms almost magically with ‘Mere rang mein rangne waali’ played in
the background made it nothing short of a cringefest!”
-Sonia Ahuja, homemaker who has been married for 35 years.
Many of us have witnessed our parents’ wedding videos and I can safely say that most of us couldn’t
resist pressing the ‘Forward’ button multiple times. However, wedding videography has seen quite a
transformation from what it was a few decades ago. Although some couples still go in for traditional
videography, wherein everything is recorded from the start to the end, most don’t end up watching
them thereafter on account of the duration that seems more like an ordeal.
These days, cinematic wedding films are trending in the Indian weddings’ sphere. The candid shots,
the variety of angles, close-ups, drone photography and slow-motion edits are only some of the many
dramatic elements responsible for making these films more popular over the years.

According to Noopur and Anish, Co-
founders of Happy Flashbacks, the
Indian wedding filmmaking trend is
transforming. With regards to this they
say and I quote, “When we look at the
Indian wedding filmmaking sphere these
days, editing and transitions are being
paid key attention to. There is a special
emphasis on the post-production process,
rather than a lot of focus on candid
moments and storytelling.”
Wedding videos are essential when
capturing special moments of a wedding,
that otherwise get lost and to which
photographs cannot do complete justice.
Whether it is a relative breaking into a
naagin dance, the groom kissing the
bride’s forehead gently, or the bride’s
mother trying to control her tears during
the vidaai, there are moments that
wouldn’t be half as special or memorable
if wedding films did not exist. However,
there are a bunch of misconceptions that
couples have while booking a wedding
videographer. Here are some that need
to be busted at the earliest.
Wedding
Videos: A
Fading Trend?
Wedding videos and films, both
have a different purpose to serve.
Wedding videos are more like a
complete documentation of the
entire wedding ceremony, while films
are based more on experience and
done with the intention of making
memories in an aesthetically
appealing way. A wedding film
has more than just recording the
happenings- it has snippets of
interviews by the bride and groom
and the family/friends and it is more
concept-based, almost like a story.
In other words, a wedding
venue consists usually of a
linear concept, recording and
showcasing the happenings at
a wedding as they are, sans
any frills, except for probably
background music and transitions.
A wedding film, however, is more
personalised and focuses a lot
on the relationship between the
couple. For most filmmakers,
the aim is to capture the minute
details, bringing to life the
couple’s love story.

Does a Story Concept
or Plot Matter?
“Weddings can be unpredictable. No matter how much
you plan and try, things do get haywire while in action.
We do take note of the kind of couple they are, what kind
of songs they like, and their camaraderie. Based on that
we prepare a little outline which helps us ask the right
questions to get what we want,” says Madhura Lingayat,
Wedding Photographer and FilmMaker at Little Big
Weddings.
While filming a wedding, although filmmakers may
take down certain guidelines and note some basic
information about the couple, a lot of it happens
organically, on the D-day. Some couples like a
particular film and may use it as a reference to show
their filmmaker what they actually want, while some just
narrate their story and leave it on the filmmakers as to
how they would like to present it.
To this, Noopur and Anish add that, “We do not rely on preconceived concepts or stories as we don’t like to
be directors of the wedding film. We leave it to the couple to interact naturally with one another. We try to get
as many natural shots as possible and show very real emotions. We put this together in a way that tells a real
story and try to incorporate any narrative the couple wants in the film.”
Tips
Here are a few quick tips every couple should keep in mind while booking an ideal
wedding filmmaker for their event:
1. It is imperative for you to know the cost to be incurred for the shoot
2.If there is any particular location you have in time, it is best you make sure the filmmakers
know, so that they can plan the filmmaking concept accordingly
3. Enquire about the size of the team
4.Ask the filmmakers to show you their previous work and discuss your preferences with them as
well. It is imperative that you know if you and the filmmaker are on the same page

66. 5 Pro-tips to Ace Your
Wedding Photography
Written by Nikita Banerjee Bhagat
Gone are the days when photo albums were few and far between, filled with stiff poses and awkward smiles.
This was especially true for wedding photo albums. Yes, we have had our share of laughs as we pored over
old memories captured on celluloid. Thankfully, today photography is the art of visual storytelling. No wonder,
the right wedding photographer is high on the priority list for every couple. But hiring a wedding photographer
is not enough. To decode the secret tricks, we did a quick Q&A with ace photographer Jackson James of
Jackson James Productions.
Jackson James is a photographer who is passionate about his craft and enjoys candid photography the best.
He believes that capturing a couple’s raw emotions on their special day without asking them to pose is the best
way to bring out the most special moments. “My main goal is to give the couple a selection of photos from
which they are spoilt for choice and can’t decide which ones to frame for life!” – Jackson James

1. Your Top Tips
to Ace Wedding
Photography
A. The main part of a wedding or any event photo
shoot has to be the lighting. One should ensure that
proper lighting requirements are followed by the
clients. Avoid small LED bulb lighting
B. Do not hire too many photography teams as they
tend to behave like paparazzi and might come in the
way of any good candid shot
C. Hire a good event planner. Make sure the events
are properly planned and enough time is given to
each ceremony
D. The event flow should be drafted at least 3 weeks
in advance and circulated to the photography team to
give them enough time to plan the shoot
E. The venue booked should be adequate and should
be according to the guest count of the event

The client should remember, more than their
outfits or the decor of the wedding, it is their
photos and the wedding films that matter.
It is through them, that they can remember
their special day. So, don’t be cheap and
book a team of your choice.
Don’t get carried away by the online feeds
of certain companies. Get a review from
their previous clients beforehand to avoid
getting duped.

Peacocks and Paisleys, Florals and Faces.
For a quintessential Indian bride, the significance of me-
hendi is considerably beyond just the artwork, and more
intriguing than the intricacies of the mehendi designs.
The word ‘mehendi’ is derived from the Sanskrit word,
‘mehdhika’. The history of mehendi can be traced back
to 5000 years ago when people would soak their palms
and feet into henna for a cooling sensation. Gradually this
sparked the idea of using it to form patterns on the skin as
they looked appealing to the eyes. Prior to the advent of tat-
toos and other modern ways of beautification, henna leaves
were dried and ground into a powder-like form, thereafter,
making it into a fine paste. Subsequently, the paste was
used for body art, using a variety of application techniques.
In the Indian culture, the ritual of applying mehendi
before the wedding ceremony has existed since times
immemorial. The mehendi ceremony entails the extensive
application of mehendi designs over the bride’s palms,
hands, and feet. It is believed that this acts as a good
omen and thus, it is a must-have ceremony before most
Indian marriages. In some traditions, mehendi is applied
to the hands of the groom as well. Beliefs state that the
colour of the mehendi is directly proportional to the bond
of love between the couple- the darker the colour, the
stronger the love connection! Others believe that me-
hendi stands for fertility and it signifies the understanding
shared between a newlywed bride and her mother-in-law.
In present times, the mehendi ceremony stands as one of the most awaited wedding festivities for a bride-
filled with colour, music, and razzmatazz. Mehendi ceremonies witness the family and friends of the bride
and groom dancing to folk or traditional songs, the decor is usually avant grande with quirky accents to
add the extra oomph, while the ladies of family sit eager to get mehendi applied onto their palms. Most
brides are known to get the initial of their partner’s name incorporated into the design as well.

Traditional vs
Minimalistic
Personalised Mehendi
Designs: Here to Stay?
In the past few years, there has been a swift transi-
tion in the designs that brides opt for, and person-
alised designs have almost steamrolled the other
elements.
Pallavi Parinita, an ace mehendi designer says,
“Both minimalistic and conventional designs have
their fair portion of fan following among the brides-
to-be. But, if we talk about pure numbers, more
brides opt for conventional intricate designs, the rea-
son being you can have minimalistic henna on any
regular day as well. Having said that some brides
have a very unique vision of their wedding and opt
for subtle and minimalistic themes as well.”
Although there has been an upsurge in the de-
mand for minimal, more simplistic and understated
mehendi designs for the millennial brides who do
not want anything too extravagant, however, one
cannot deny that the core of most mehendi designs
is strongly dominated by or revolve around more
traditional designs.
The primary reason behind this is the fact that brides
have grown fond of getting most of their wedding
elements customised or personalised, making their
wedding stand out from the rest. Also, mehendi
artists have become adept at infusing personalised
elements into the bride’s mehendi designs.

76. 76 I The Wedding Trunk by Weddingz.in
“I think it is a great way of making your mehen-
di more meaningful, fun and relatable. It is also
a wonderful medium to have the groom includ-
ed in the mehendi design, which otherwise, he
is not a part of (except probably for his name’s
initial). The entire bespoke mehendi process is
an elaborate one- involving both the bride and
groom in discussing the same. The personalised
elements revolve around couples giving their
mehendi more depth and making it a rather
memorable experience,” says well-known me-
hendi designer Rashi Aggarwal.
In the recent past, a bevvy of personalised elements
have proven to be trendsetters when it comes to
bridal mehendi designs, like love quotes, portraits of
the couple, portraits of their pet(s), elements depict-
ing their favourite movies or Television shows (for
example Game of Thrones), symbols representing
their first date or a location close to their hearts, and
things they share in common.
White Henna:
Yay or Nay?
Although not a full-blown rage when it comes to
the bridal mehendi arena, one cannot deny the
prettiness it adds to a bride’s ensemble. The irony
is that although referred to as ‘white mehendi’,
based on the way it looks, it does not contain any
amount of henna. Some make use of cosmetic
adhesives to prepare it, while some prepare it using
body paint and glitter.
To this, Rashi Aggarwal adds, “I have had requests
for white mehendi designs, however, none of them
have been from a bride for a wedding.
Such requests are usually few and far between
and only for casual parties.”
The number of brides choosing this style over tradi-
tional mehendi designs is extremely low. This may
be due to the fact that brides still have a cartload of
unanswered queries when it comes to white me-
hendi and also it does not leave impressions on the
skin, just like conventional mehendi does.

Things to Keep in Mind while Choosing your
Mehendi Design
1. Mehendi Artist
First and foremost, you must pick a
mehendi artist wisely. Do your re-
search. Go through the Instagram
accounts of artists or consult friends
who have booked mehendi artists in
the past.
2. Quality of Henna
Prior to your wedding, it is best if you
visit different mehendi artists and try
out the quality of henna that they use
on a small section of your skin. This
way you will be able to find the perfect
quality of mehendi for you, avoiding
any last-minute allergies or reactions.
3. Hand Shape
Your mehendi design can make
your hands look long and slender
or broader. Thus, it is imperative
that you choose the designs wise-
ly. If you have long and thin hands,
you can pick geometric shapes,
whereas, if you have broader hands
you can go in for leaves, paisleys,
and other longer designs.
Tips
1. Do not wash off the mehendi soon. Leave it on for 10-12 hours instead of the regular 6-7 hours.
Also, do not wash off your mehendi with water
2. Boil some sugar in water and allow it to cool off, then transfer it into a bowl. Now, add few drops of
lemon juice, apply to your hands after the henna is dried and then add the sugar mixture. This helps
the mehendi to become darker
3. After applying the lemon juice and sugar mixture, heat few cloves on in a pan and then can run
your hands over clove fumes. After the sugar and lemon mixture dries up, you can scrape off the me-
hendi
4. Rub balm on your hands after you scrape off the dried mehendi. This helps the mehendi penetrate
deeper into the skin, thus making the colour darker

India’s wedding industry is estimated to be worth
$40-50 billion a year. Destination Weddings,
domestic and international, contribute a large chunk
to this amount. While still a new phenomenon, they
are picking up pretty quickly. “Average Spend at a
destination wedding is about 75L to 1.5Cr,” says the
founder of Sepia Events, Manav.
Most couples today are opting to celebrate their
special day away from the hustle of city life. And who
can blame them? Clearly, we don’t!
Destination Weddings:
Where to Get Married?
Written by Yosha Patole

Why to Opt
for a Destination
Wedding?
What sets destination weddings apart from locally
hosted weddings is that, first of all, a destination
wedding acts like a big fat family vacation and
then there is a cut down on the guest list. While
invitations may be sent out to all, not many are
expected to attend it.
Sunaina, one of the founders of Memorable Indian
Weddings explains that they are more intimate and
personalized, giving you control over the guest list,
decor and ultimately make the wedding a part of
their personality.
Manav, the founder of Sepia Events agrees with the
intimacy angle and suggests going for a destination
wedding that offers more privacy and scope for
special ceremonies.
“We had a lavish engagement ceremony within the
city and belonging to large families meant that there
were one too many guests, most of whom we hadn’t
really met or engaged with before our function,”
says Maheka Mehta, 28, who tied the knot in 2019.
She further adds that luckily her parents and in-laws
agreed for a destination wedding albeit closer to the
city in good ole Lonavala. Hosting the wedding
ceremonies outside the city definitely helped Maheka
cut down on the guest list. “I was surrounded by my
loved ones. I knew each and every one. The same
was true for my husband too. My family was at ease.
Everyone had a part to play and hit it off really well!”
says Maheka.
Our Weddingz WOW report revealed that between
January 1, 2019 to December 26, 2019, Goa was
one of the most popular destinations for a wedding.
Destinations like Udaipur, Jaipur, Jim Corbett, Agra,
Igatpuri and Lonavala followed.

A Butter Chiken & Bhujia Affair:
Decoding an Eco-friendly Wedding
Written by Ashita Ahuja
When it comes to shaadi-biyaahs, all Indians follow the same mantra ‘no expense spared!’ While this adds to
all the fun and frolic, it often leads to a lot of waste, contributing to a big chunk of carbon
footprint and of course, physical as well as sound pollution. Thankfully, this attitude is now on the mend.
There is a new buzz word doing the rounds - Eco-friendly weddings. Yes, it is a real thing and it is indeed
heartwarming to see how more and more couples are becoming sensitive to the environment and incorpo-
rating changes in their wedding to ensure it causes minimal or no harm to the environment.
Sanchita and Prasoon’s zero-waste wedding is proof of how one can ace an eco-friendly affair, while mak-
ing it look gorgeous.

Fun fact- The wedding was a mix of two different cul-
tures. Prasoon was born and brought up in Delhi and
Sanchita was born and brought up in Bikaner, Rajas-
than. Prasoon comes from a fun-loving Punjabi family
and Sanchita comes from a simple Baniya family. While
Prasoon’s family’s idea of a wedding was dance, daaru,
chicken, and fun, Sanchita’s family’s idea of the wedding
was the rituals and good food. Prasoon’s favourite food is
butter chicken, while Sanchita’s is bhujia and that is how
the hashtag of their wedding is #butterchickenwithbhujia.
The
beatiful bride, Sanchita, is a
hardcore zero-waste enthusiast and
working hard towards achieving UN
sustainable goals. The environmental-
ly-conscious bride Sanchita asked her
sister Prakriti to take care of the wedding
arrangements for her all-green wedding.
Prakriti and Sanchita are very pro-sustainability
and do their bit in their everyday lives to be as
environment-friendly as possible. Prakriti came up
with the theme of ‘Let Love Grow’ and executed it
effortlessly.
Prakriti, who is also a successful freelance wedding consultant at
Creative Minds Corner said, “The first thing I did as the wedding
planner was to Google ‘eco-friendly weddings’ in India. It was shocking to see that no North
Indian wedding has been done in a fully zero-waste manner. I definitely had the option to
talk to some existing planners to help us arrange an eco- friendly wedding, but I was
personally so passionate about this and wanted to avoid waste in every step of
the way and not just those two days. It was very exciting to see that there
are a lot of weddings using eco-friendly cutlery and using saplings
at their wedding ceremonies, but we wanted to make
sure every element is paid attention to.”

Mehendi Signage
and Favours
To begin with, the mehendi ceremony’s highlight
was the signage, ‘Let Love Grow’ that signified
the mehendi favours in the cart. The signage
was made on seed paper and unused card-
board was utilized to make it stiff. Prakriti en-
sured that she did not use a flex board, as that
would contain plastic that would never biode-
grade.
There was a cart at the Mehendi ceremony that
had eco-friendly favours for the guests. The idea
of having seed balls was clever and fun, main-
because as favour it is easily portable and grows
into one full plant. Each seed ball could grow
into a full marigold plant. Each seed ball was
packed in an organza dupatta. These were or-
dered from Araatrika. In addition to this, saplings
were also kept for the local guests. The idea
behind this wasn’t new, but it was an attempt to
revive the almost-forgotten hobby of gardening.
To this Prakriti adds, “The highlight of this favour
was its packaging. When you generally purchase
a sapling from a nursery, you get them in a plas-
tic bag or in plastic pots. When we ordered these
plants for the favours, we requested the nursery
to wrap them in jute bags instead. For this, we
collected scrap jute bags from the scrap dealer
and cut them into smaller pieces to make them
suitable to fit the saplings.”
The cart also had leheriya sarees, that were
given away to the bridesmaids and they wore
them on the Haldi ceremony. The sarees did not
need any special wrapping owing to them being
colourful and beautiful and they were simply
packed with a golden thread.
Chair Tags
Prakriti made special chair tags for the couple for the
sangeet ceremony. These tags were upcycled using
scrap jute bags and acrylic paint.
Ritual Gifts
Every wedding involves lots and lots of gift exchanges
and specially on the Sagan day. The gifts for the
groom’s family were all packed in a cotton cloth bag
reusable cloth and was upcycled using some wooden
trays and baskets that were just not used. These were
further decorated with a net instead of plastic. There
was a handwritten name tag attached to every gift to
complete this gift look.

Hadli Decor and
Favours
The haldi ceremony is an integral part of any wedding
ceremony, and it is the emotions and use of bright hues
that make it noteworthy! The bride’s haldi and Prakriti
made sure that the gendas were grown at home itself. To
top this, lemons and chillies were used to give a homely
vibe and to maintain the zero-waste theme.
Prakriti made quite an impact with the return gifts for
the guests and her idea was undoubtedly out-of-the-
box. For the guests, men were gifted khadi kurtas,
while for the ladies there were Gota Patti embroidered
kurta pieces. “We wanted to gift something unique to
our friends and we went with a reusable box of organic
beauty products specially curated by “Lushveda” without
any plastic packaging and a cultural local art chowki,”
said Prakriti.
The haldi favours were quite unconventional as well-
small pom-pom badges for men and handmade haath-
phools for the ladies.
Sagan ka Lifafa
What happens when you receive a sagan ka
lifafa? It is most likely you take out the cash and
then do away with it. Most times it is impossible
to reuse the envelope as it has the host’s name
written on it. In view of this, Prakriti cycled the
envelopes from newspapers and put a wax seal
on each of them. They made approximately 200
envelopes using three different colours, indicat-
ing the amount of money each had. The best
part was that many guests kept the envelope as a
memoir of an unforgettable wedding
