The battle between the allies and axis powers in North Africa began with the fight over the key port of Tobruk in Libya, resulting in an Italian and German defeat that gave the allies an advantage. This led to the British victory over German forces in the Battle of El-Alamein through superior numbers and the absence of German leader Erwin Rommel. Shortly after, the allies launched Operation Torch, an amphibious invasion of Vichy-controlled French North Africa that secured over 1,000 miles of coastline. While the axis forces retreated to Tunisia, hoping the terrain would aid their defense, the allies eventually overcame German resistance and took Tunisia, ending the North African campaign.
