The violin is a small, high-pitched string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. It is part of the violin family which also includes the viola and cello. While ancient in origin, the violin acquired its modern form in 16th century Italy and saw further changes in the 18th century. Highly prized violins were made by Italian and Austrian families from the 16th to 18th centuries.
